Each of his clanmates should know by now that Susntar is hardly as swift as their prey. He is agile in battle, and steady upon his paws. But to race, a dead sprint towards the rabbits that flee with panicked limbs. . . it is not his specialty. No matter how many moons he lived upon this moor, he knows that it would get no better than this. Yet his children do not need to carry his unluckiness with them. They are young enough to be malleable. To push towards a future they are better accustomed to, rather than lingering with their paws in the mountains as he does. Now that the snow has fully melted across their territory, Sunstar has forgotten all use. No longer can he help shape their snow dens, or track the prey that shuffles about in their search for frozen sprouts. Now it is speed, and mud, and clanmates that far outpace him.

He has never backed down from a challenge.

"Hold a moment," he calls to the hunting patrol he leads. There's a glimmer in his eyes, and a regal fluttering of his fur with the breeze. "The prey seem confined to their burrows for a time; it would be a shame for us to return having done little more than walk around." A slight incline of his head towards the path before them: rabbits' run, in all of its muddy glory. Stones and branches are strewn about the path, with slick patches of mud nearly hidden by the flattened grasses. An obstacle worthy of overcoming. "Why don't we race a while? Stretch our paws. Perhaps the rabbits will join us!"

With the snow melted, rabbits run is now once again traversable without having to plow through snow! Your character decides to have a race with a few others. However, be careful, the snow melt has left behind a considerable amount of mud. How does your character deal with this obstacle? (Optional: get a group of cats together and roll for the winner!)

In the light, Featherpaw caught the light shimmering from the mud-slick, concealed in the grass. No doubt, rabbits' run was slippery- and disgusting, covered in star-knows-what, likely with an array of terrible, burrowing insects beneath it. She obeyed her father's call though did not look at him, transfixed by the expanse they would have to traverse through. His frown was deep-set, disgust rippling over his entire face.

He did not mirror his father's jovial charisma, that almost made you want to drown yourself in mud. Featherpaw blinked hard, eyes narrowing thereafter to study the terrain- it would be a challenge, to say the least. Well-sharpened fangs fastened in contemplation. It would be disgusting, unpleasant, surely... despite the way Sunstar spoke. And what would be the use, other than fun which would die moments after when he had to then clean himself?

A challenge, then. To be a worthy warrior, trusted, honed, brilliant- deserving of the blood that beat her guarded heart- it would be useful to learn to traverse difficult terrain. Deep in the darkened frown, something softened. "You can't let your apprentice show you up," he murmured to Bluepool, curious whether the challenge- and the training opportunity- might entice her to participate.

Firefang was a moor-runner through and through, the only thing that affected her was she was not as small and slim as some of her peers. Only thing that barred her from was very sharp turns and ducking low, other then that she finds she’s a good runner, enough of one for her to have an ego about it as any good moorrunner should. She’s always been competitive, a trait born into her from having to squabble with her siblings for her mothers love and attention that was never hers, and had grown into a desire to be seen and celebrated from not just her - but from Sootstar and her council. She doesn’t know whose approval she seeks now, is it Sunstars? She’s doubtful regardless of having everything to prove running seemed to be so much lesser then proving she wouldn’t bury her claws in his neck the moment he let his guard down around her.

A huff of laughter comes out of her "Don’t hurt yourself now Sunstar, last thing we need is for you to be carrying a limp and a bruised ego" its a testy remark but lacking malice, she is just joking. Her competition should be easy to outspeed, sure she had Bluepool here but she doesn’t doubt she can outpace her. The apprentices were hardly a problem, they’d likely slip down the slope and tumble to the finish line. Her shoulders roll in their sockets and she stretches out her hind legs preparing to bolt.

Prancing like a shadow-stained crane on reed-thin legs, Gracklestep follows after his patrol with a sun-sinking scrutiny where they drag across loose stones and seas of muck. Spring, for all its joys, is a disgustingly heavy season, the air weighted by sticky and dusty cheers from trampled flowers and the earth grabbing around unsuspecting ankles to suck them beneath the surface in the form of make-shift cinderblocks. Sunstar is lucky that for every dappled rosette on his body it has translated to an intoxicating charisma... No one has known him to be the fastest set of paws this side of the river and yet stubbornly he proposes a race. He knows damn well he'll fail... and yet he offers it anyways.

A grin spreads wide, concocting a beautiful vision for how it could become possible with a few well-placed twig-like legs wedged between the over-excited paws of his speedier clan-mates.

"Watch your step.... would be a shame if one of those twigs out there tripped you up," he offers in faux-concern to Firefang, whose confidence reeks like carrion place. "The mud's slick... a few of us may return home a far different color than we left this morning," he laughs softly, tail flicking in snake-like excitement behind him.

Of her skills, it’s her swiftness that she takes most pride in. If not for her speed, Sparrowbreeze might not be part of WindClan in the first place. The brown tabby entered the moors running, and a moor runner she’ll spend the rest of her days as.

So when their β€” rather dull β€” hunting patrol is halted with a call for a race from Sunstar, the brown tabby’s ears perk up. β€œ A race? β€œ she echoes, eyes shifting to the race track ahead of them with an eager glimmer, a glint much like the shine of the mud puddles that riddles Rabbits’ Run. Excitement dims at the possibility of trudging through such a slippery mess, but the obstacles before them don’t stop the moor runner from preparing herself to launch forward at the call to begin. β€œ You’re on..! β€œ

It’s still a chance to run, after all β€” one she might not’ve had today, if it weren’t for her leader’s challenge.

The idea of a race is something that Bluepool is not certain that she ever would be capable of turning down. Even though she was fiercely competitive, it did not matter in a race if she won or lost she just loved to run, to feel the wind run cool fingers through her blue-tinted pelt. Featherpaw's words draw a barking laugh from her jaws and she turns to look at her apprentice with a challenging gleam in sunshine eyes. "Oh is that how you wanna play it?" she knows what she is doing, of course. The goading to get her to participate is not exactly subtle but this was not exactly something she would ever turn down. And if Featherpaw really wanted to challenge her then so be it. "I hope you like eating my dust" she says while flexing her claws into the soft earth beneath her.

The mud is the only thing that worries her, and it would seem a couple of her clanmates felt similarly as Gracklestep makes a comment about it and Bluepool hums in soft agreement. She certainly would not be coming out of this unscathed which was a shame but no doubt Scorchstreak would be there to help her clean all of it out of her fur and the idea of having an excuse to share tongues with her mate for an extra long time today already has her plunging down into the slippery track, a taunt on her tongue "Last one to the starting line is a rotten egg!" she calls behind her, cackling in delight as mud squishes between her toes.
