Living in the barn had been an adjustment - at least, at first. It'd taken shockingly little time for peri to realize the most important thing however - how safe he'd felt, surrounded by walls and a roof overhead. He'd always known himself to be strange, at least by windclans standards - fearful of the skies overhead, uncomfortable sleeping out in the open. Hiding away in the nursery, the medicine den. During the journey, he'd enjoyed the time spent in the darkness of the caves, or sheltered by the thick blanket of pine and leaves the trees had provided.

It's no different now - despite the unpleasant scent of straw that tickles his nose and makes eyes water, the battle scared boy lies comfortably within the shelter, paws tucked neatly beneath his frame and daisy-strewn tail wrapped tight around his body. Blue eyes watch tiredly as clanmates and strangers alike bustle about - exhaustion finally weighing him down. His insomnia has kept him awake far to long, and now that he's brought prey home from his hunt the night before it's time to rest. Now if only his body would cooperate.

// please wait for @BLIZZARDKIT

The feeling of safety is hardly a familiar one to the kit. For as long as they can remember, their mother had been jumpy, spooked by each and every passing shadow. They had been forced to move constantly, hardly slowing down even when the litter's delicate paws began to ache so badly they felt as though they could hardly stand up. The family had only moved at night, and so the cold only sank in faster—they were never safe. And they were even less safe when the snow descended upon them one night, and their mother ushered them beneath a log. It had been warm, but the chill that crept in at the edges of their shelter had bitten at their ears with more force than their siblings' sharp kit-teeth.

The barn that Blizzardkit has been brought to is not entirely safe, with words like attack and battle swirling around through the older cats' conversations. The kit does not take interest in much of what the warriors say, and spends most of its time sleeping. Time that she does not spend in slumber is used to search for new places to nap in, though, and so the kit has spent a fair amount of time doing exactly that.

Now, the kit spots a cat who is rarely caught napping, and pale pink eyes go wide with wonder. That fur… Warm. Like their mother's. Soft, and without the frosting of ice across the tips. Periwinklebreeze seems to be attempting to sleep—Blizzardkit pays that fact no mind, shuffling closer to the older cat until she can step lightly onto his tail. There are flowers strewn throughout the fur, but they are a bit crunchy so the kit does not touch them. "Hmm…" the kit hums, moving to rest her tiny head against the much-larger cat she now lies atop. She does not fall asleep, not yet, but her drowsy blinking grows slower and slower, purrs rumbling through her frail form.

Ever since Blizzardkit had arrived, Rattleheart had essentially made it his mission to keep an eye on them. Not because he distrusted any of his clanmates - although some of the barn cats certainly put him on edge - but because he had seen firsthand just how unpredictable life could be. Especially for kits, their tiny lives so fragile that the tunneler just wanted to curl up around them all and hide them away from anything and everything that could hurt them. His maternal instinct had been rearing its head more and more often as of late, and while he wouldn't go so far as to call himself Blizzardkit's mother, he at least knew that he cared for it. Wanted to see them thrive in a safe, loving Windclan. A Windclan that no kits had truly been able to experience so far, if they were all being honest with themselves.

It was because of this fretting that he watched from afar, head tilting lightly to one side when he saw Blizzardkit go stumbling over to Periwinklebreeze's exhausted form. No panic rushed up in him just yet, Periwinklebreeze being one of the clanmates that Rattleheart would probably trust most around a child. He was practically a pacifist unless forced, not one to snap or snarl at a mere exploring child. Still, judging by how worn down the moor runner seemed, it almost seemed like a coin toss over whether he would appreciate the sudden company or not. That alone was enough to rouse the tunneler to his paws, following after Blizzard's wandering - that is, until she went and curled herself up right atop his tail.

The sight alone was enough to stop Rattleheart in his tracks, soft laughter leaving his muzzle at just how sweet the entire scene was. If Periwinklebreeze had already been asleep, he would've just turned and left the both of them to their own devices. But, seeing as the younger warrior had not yet succumb to the sweet embrace of rest, Rattleheart purred in amusement. "It seems like you've made yourself a little friend... a fan of Periwinkle's flowers, little one?" His later words were directed towards Blizzardkit herself, warm smile growing at the drowsy expression that made itself present clear as day on their face.

Periwinklebreeze almost doesn't notice when he's no longer alone - wouldn't have, in fact, if the kit hadn't decided his tail would make a good nest. Good eye blinks open as he squints, head raising. He stares at blizzardkit for a moment, tongue tied - and then he decides it's not worth fussing about. "C-comfortable?" he murmurs at last. It's not as though he's uncomfortable by her presence - he loves kits, and he's always been the affectionate sort.

A quiet purr rumbles in his own chest as his breathing settles once more, though he's more alert by the time rattleheart joins them. " Softer th-than the straw i b-bet, " he complains jokingly, voice quiet - it's not that the new nesting material wasn't warm, but something about it bothered him, kept him from resting. Maybe it was the bothersome smell - or maybe it was the strangeness of it all, compared to the grass and rabbit fur he's grown used to.
