backwritten WHAT’S LOST IS LOST [council meeting]

༄༄ Sunstar's den seems empty without the tom's presence, broad and radiant. It reminds her of the eclipsed sun, the way that it disappeared and left behind only a dark hole of nothingness. Similarly, there is a hole here, a piece of WindClan missing. But the danger is only mounting—they cannot sit idly and wait for their savior to return. She had made the call to leave him there, to save herself and Pinkpaw and Firefang and Gracklestep, and so Sunstar may never return at all. She will not consider such a fate, however—not now. Instead, she settles in her usual spot beside Bluepool, just as they would have for any other council meeting. But there is no prey to be shared this time, and Sunstar's and Wolfsong's spots sit vacant. In a voice cracked and dry with smoke, she begins, "Sunstar is dead." And Wolfsong is gone. She has a guess as to where the medicine cat has disappeared to, but the entire council cannot take off after the pair of toms. The way she sees it, Wolfsong is the one best equipped to save Sunstar and bring him back to them all, and the lead warriors (with the addition of Cottonpaw) must handle the task of saving the rest of WindClan.

She clears her throat. "He will come back, I'm certain, but until then… we are without a leader. The fires are closing in. Soon, we will have to evacuate—the kits and elders cannot stay here." Even if the fires never encroach upon their camp's walls, the pillars of smoke that rise across their territory are all too eager to choke out any life that they float across. "We need to decide what the clan should do." Golden eyes flick from face to face, settling for only heartbeats before moving on.

There is a certain 'fact of the matter' that makes Cottonpaw's stomach roll with discomfort. She had undoubtedly been alive when her mother lost many of her lives - she had watched, even, whilst the last was torn from her. Yet the truth that Sunstar could suffer the same unending cycle, of feeling death become him nine times over... it's almost sickening. She understands Scorchstreak's command to leave the tom behind, for although dying due to blood loss must be terrifying, he can do so a few times before StarClan stitches him up well. Each of them... can only die once.

She follows the lead warriors dutifully, somehow still feeling uneasy. Wolfsong has disappeared, and like Scorchstreak she can wager a guess to where the tom left to. It almost feels like she's beneath Sootstar's scrutiny again, alone, Cottonfang. Scorchstreak grounds her but she does not err too close to the tunneler lead, for she knows they do not hold trust in her so easily.

They begin to speak, and she listens. Evacuation - it's unavoidable. If the fires do not consume them, the smoke will smother them instead. Grasskit has already suffered from the thick black clouds, and she can only imagine how many tunnelers and moor runners must be hiding their ailments in the chaos. But where are they to run to? She fixes her mind on the Clans, but so many of the borders are entrapped by flames - and although Howlingstar is kind, Chilledstar is not. Even Highstones and the barn - each locked away by the fire. Which only leaves...

"The land by the gorge," she says, ears craning back, "It's the furthest from the fire, but I'm not sure... that it will stop before it finds us." And crossing the bridge into RiverClan territory? Ha! They'd sooner learn to fly before that happens.

Sunstar is dead. Somehow, despite everything, thats something he'd never thought that he'd hear. Sure, it's only temporary... but still. e's only been their leader for so but still. He's only been their leader for a few moons, an already he's had one life cut short. Frown pulls at his lips even s he tries to fight down his rising panic - scorchstreak is right, they won't be able to fight the flames if they arrive at camp. " Th-the tunnels - could they use th-the tunnels? " comes wavering voice, quiet as ever as blue eyes flit between his fellow council. They've taken shelter there before - from rain and snow and storms and sickness... surely, the fire wont be able to reach them down there? Only the kits and queens and elders need make it out anyways - cruel though the thought may be, surely they'd be able to rebuild if they lost a few moor runners.
