BREEZEBLOCKS &. frog egg hunting.

their ears flicked back and forth as they quietly listened to the soft sounds of the rain. had it been any other day, maybe a week before, they'd have truly been enjoying it. they always did. the rain brings a certain sense of serenity into their bones, deeper than anything else ever could. it makes them forget their worries, the pain. any of that... at least it usually does. right now, it doesn't do anything for them but clog up their senses. the scent of rain is always thick and heavy, and the familiar pitter patter only reminds them of why they're out here in the first place. they have a job to do. they don't even want to be out here, right now, but duty always came first, didn't it?

their teeth gritted for a moment before they turned back to the patrol, gesturing ahead. there had to be some frog eggs around here in shallow ponds somewhere. they needed to get rid of them, and they needed to do it now. starclan would probably be unhappy but honestly when has starclan ever shone down on them in favor? when have they ever truly given them something for nothing? they try their best to give starclan credit where credit is due but it gets harder and harder every day. shadowclan always had to work several times harder for even the smallest sense of victory.

"find the eggs, crush them, and move on. if there are too many frogs in one spot... move them along, or kill them."

surely the frog songs would attract predators if they were way too loud. they had enough of that for a couple of life times.

Mirepurr listens to the song of frogs with the belief that they'd never again hear it with such intensity. The plan the council had come up with seems sound - culling the invasion's very source - so they have little reason to doubt it. Disposing of a type of prey's young is against everything they know, it's counter-productive when it comes to strictly instinct, but they know the slippery things are all too enticing for predators. ShadowClan needs to keep its doors closed to them... that stubborn badger's attacks are still fresh in their mind.

The path doesn't divert but Mirepurr does, picking a random side when Chilledstar barks orders. All senses work in tandem to sniff out the eggs, like some sort of bloodhound after its prized possession.

"Sorry," they mutter, mostly to themself, paws growing wet as they get dipped into a shady, shallow pond. A scoop, a press- countless baby frogs get wiped in one easy motion.

.·:*¨༺🕷༻¨*:·. While her first official patrol out of camp would have ideally been one that consisted of hunting, or even a border patrol, Briarpaw supposed spending her day crushing frog eggs was better than doing nothing at all, only being able to do nothing at all. Light-footed and silent against the soft pattering of rainfall, Briarpaw slips through the marshland on the heels of her leader without a word, avoiding ankle-deep mud and the puddles that had begun to pool.
Finally, her snow freckled leader comes to a halt, expectant hazel optics follow their gesture before she receives her instructions. Keeping her silence, Briarpaw only nods before slipping off, into thickening marshland foliage. The first pond she comes to is likely only a couple of fox-lengths away, and a portion of surface was dimpled by the dozens, small clear bubbles shining. Nearing the edge of the pond, Briarpaw extends her forelimb, sweeping as many as she could towards her. Her claws have no use here, but the ebony molly keeps them out anyways, using the bulk of her paw pad to press firmly down on the helpless tadpoles.
Better you than I.

Lividpaw did not look forward to this not because he cared about the lives they were about to end but knowing very well how nasty his paws were going to look after this. It had taken him hours to groom his fur after the ambush of the frogs and now he was being forced to dirty himself down for them yet again. He for sure would call this for a bad day, not one he would remember fondly of in the future for sure. However, orders were orders and Lividpaw was going to obey to them flawlessly like he always did. No doubt about that.

With the orders out Lividpaw wasted no more time to stick around as he took his own way to search for eggs to kill but obiviously wouldn't wander of too far away so he would get separated from the group. Lividpaw frowned when he came across the first nest of eggs that lay in the pond of water. He glared down at it coldly before he lifted a paw and swiped it down to crush and destroy the eggs. Every single one of them Lividpaw would make sure to not escape from his dreadful paws. He stamped on them all as he mercilessly killed them without one drop of remorse or guilt. There was no reason for him to feel bad for vermins, for prey overall. It was their destiny to perish under his claws or teeths. It was simple how the world worked. The nature way of order.

A wolf never felt bad when killing a sheep so why should he?.

He moved on to the next nest when he was done and repeated the process as he squashed them all while hating the sensation underneath his paws, and how the dirty water splashed up to filthy down his fur. Lividpaw really hoped this was the solution to their frog problems and that doing all of this would be all worth it in the end.

✧ . Screechpaw's first patrol after the incident is nothing ordinary, though nothing has truly been ordinary in the last moon of his life. It's no hunting or border patrol, but one with tasked with a more special mission: crushing frog eggs. Part of Screechpaw is bummed he won't get to experience the bountiful hunting the rest of the clan had while he was on the mend, but he knows this is what they must do, or they'll be overrun with the frogs more than what they already have.

And ShadowClan doesn't need even more trouble right now, do they?

He walks somewhere between his mentor and his sister until Chilledstar's stride stalls. He looks to them for instruction, an expectant gaze more focused than what it might have been in moons. When the leader gives the go-ahead to split off, he does without question, though doesn't have the time or will to stray far before he comes across his first target. The pond hardly looks like a pond with the gelatinous clusters it holds within it.

The apprentice is quick to act, a dark paw reaching out to step on the nearest, to crush them under what weight he pushes down on them with. His other forepaw follows, stomping on what eggs he can. At least he's capable of doing this — of catching something that can't move, that can't run from him.

.·:*¨༺🕷༻¨*:·. Briarpaw isn't sure what prompts her to do it, to act in such an unbecoming way- perhaps it is seeing the way her sibling, classless as ever, stomps upon the ribbons of eggs through the marshland grass, or maybe it is the desire to try and be a sister in place of an authoritarian, but with a string of clear, jellied frog eggs carefully skewed onto her claw, the raven apprentice begins to move silently through the grass, towards where Screechpaw had his back to her.
Working her way around to avoid slipping into a water-logged mud bed, she finally emerges from the grass as though a mere shadow, with her forelimb holding the frog eggs extended, Briarpaw would aim to bump it against her brothers nose, if she was able to take him by surprise as she had intended. It was a poor mimic of what a playful gesture would be, and while there is no laughter that follows her "ambush," Briarpaw would attempt to keep the frog eggs close to where Screechpaw could take a good look inside.
"You can see the tadpoles. See?"

you can count on me

Hemlocknose hadn't exactly been fond of the gaggle of frogs plaguing his territory. He was no stranger to an influx of rain and frogs and other wetland creatures, but this was... excessive. With an annoyed flick of his paw, sending a drop or two of mud flying in some odd direction, he nodded to Chilledstar. Find the eggs and crush them. I can do that.

The senior warrior broke off from the group, coming across a pile of them in no time. A slight hesitation, paw held up to stomp on the squishy beads. He wasn't relishing in it, rather mourning that he had to end these lives before they even began. It felt different doing this, compared to hunting prey. Prey was one thing. The circle of life and all. This felt like slaughter. A necessary evil, he thought with a grimace. "Forgive me, he murmured, before crushing the eggs under a large paw.
