Somehow, despite it all, Periwinklebreeze finds himself with an abundance of time on his paws. It probably doesn't help that he can rarely sleep on a good night, either, but the boy finds himself feeling more restless than eyes. Sleep refuses to come no matter how weary his mind grows, and it becomes increasingly common to find the tom up late at night, sharing quiet conversations with his clanmates. He cannot leave the camp after all, and as much as he loves spending time with his kits and the rest of the nurseries denizens, some part of him mourns his freedom. Gone are nighttime hunts, nighttime runs to stretch his legs. All of it.

Tonight however, he pushes such thoughts away from his mind - focusing instead on the apprentice beside him. Of his clanmates, kitepaw is not one he's particularly close to - but they aren't strangers, either. It's hard to be, when one grows up in the same clan surrounded by the same faces every ay. At first he's quiet, observing the stars in near silence - save for the shuffling of his breath leaving his lips, soft snuffles as he fights back allergies he cannot avoid as greenleaf creeps ever nearer.

And then, he speaks at last - voice soft and quiet in the darkness, never turning his gaze away. " Do you ever w-wonder how st-starclan passes the time? " its a strange question really, but with wandering mind and most of the kittens tucked into bed all he can do is think, and a wandering mind comes up with strange things.

KITEPAW. AND HOW CAN WE WIN WHEN FOOLS CAN BE KINGS? † ☼
𖤓 ✟—- he doesn't think he has ever spent time with periwinklebreeze like this. of course, he's helped them with tasks or traveled alongside them on patrols before they were confined to the nursery, but kitepaw cannot recall a moment where the two of them had nothing to do but relax and enjoy each other's company... something he does not seem to find difficult around the queen. though he doesn't find his own sleep difficult to come by, the boy finds himself with little desire to embrace it so swiftly tonight. yes, he realizes that he should be resting up for the morning that would greet him soon... but the sky was so beautiful and clear and it seemed the stars shone brighter than usual. a drowsy morning was a fine price to pay for enjoying a warm night like this with the sky looking down on the moors a night where kitepaw can hardly fathom why the other clans could enjoy sleeping indoors and out of sight of their ancestors.

"i wonder." he says thoughtfully in response to periwinklebreeze, tipping his head some. though he trails off into silence, it is because he finds himself thinking of a possible answer. he's never put much thought into such a question before and it leaves him briefly stumped. "i think sometimes they race. haven't you seen the moving stars?" he decides, quite certain in his answer being a true one. many nights does he look up and see the stars running across the sky, leaving their intertwining trails behind them. surely they were windclan cats... just as the stars that reflect in puddles and the river were those of riverclan, or the brightest stars in the darkest nights those of shadowclan. "imagine running across silverpelt, looking down on the moors. do you think they ever get tired?" he asks them now, turning their eyes away from the sky to look at the queen in question. perhaps one day, albeit later than sooner, he will find himself circling the world and never growing weary.

The sleepless Sootspot could seldom be found out where the stars shimmered, his preferred bedding within the tunnel entrance where he did not have to fear attack from an owl or smothering by a clanmate. With his senses heightened by the dark and slumber a pipedream, the tom's attention lingered on the camp and the murmurings of clanmates - never upon the stars themselves. It was easier to believe that they weren't there at all, than admit he would never have the privacy he longed for. Yellow eyes glinted in the darkness like rhinestones as they settled upon a random pair, discussing hypotheticals. He recognised Periwinkle's voice, then, a younger one piped up, revealing itself to be Kitepaw. 'They race! Hah.' The idea almost seemed asinine when StarClan was full of kittypets and lesser clans, who would ever partake in something they knew they would never win at? Then, the thought shifted and suddenly, he was empty. 'Looking down at the moors... never being able to interact with it... There are no tunnels in StarClan, who is to say I could even go there when my fate is in the paws of rogues and housecats?' He'd convinced himself he would reach the land of nothing after he perished, that alone was terrifying enough to shed the death wish so many WindClanners had.

"A StarClan cat has boundless energy and prey under every shimmering stone - I imagine it would take conscious effort to feel anything resembling tiredness," he interrupted, an invisible smile within his words. When sleep made up most of a cat's day, being awake at every moment sounded horrifying. Not even polite conversation could stop the shudder down his spine at the thought. "Though, that does beg the question of how long a StarClan race must be... whether they keep on going and going and can never stop for it would be an admittance of defeat. How many times is a moving star the same animals, even moons later?" He hoped, even as his questioning was with a tone so innocuous it seemed as if he was making normal conversation, someone would acknowledge how awful losing one's needs seemed.

"Is this not the same that could be said upon these moors?" Sunstar's quiet voice interrupts them from behind. Sleeplessness grew more common as the moons passed him, and with a loss such as Bearflight's still fresh upon his mind. . . he, too, often speaks of StarClan within the confines of his own thoughts. He had seen their hunting grounds in his dream, as he spoke to the kittypet king he had once stood so staunchly against. They were the cats that had brought sickness to the forest, after all. Yet he had stood in welcome, and that- that must be the truth of their time in the stars. "However many rabbits that we catch, how truly different can one be from another?" Could the stars not mimic this just the same? With the power to strike lightning upon Sootstar's place in fourtrees; with the power to warn Wolfsong of his death, and each of them of a rising enemy within the eclipse. . . could they not make new paths through their foliage for each cat to explore?

"I cannot help but imagine the peace that they feel," he continues slowly. "To rest when one is tired, to look down upon the threats down below and know that they will face no such things, except through their dreams to us." An undercurrent of unease darkens Sunstar's voice in echo of the frown lowering his brows. "Yet they have earned such things."

———— a rogue brought to windclan in a search for greatness, one of sootstar's most loyal warriors turned into her downfall. with a mate and kits to worry about, and now nine lives from starclan with a missing limb, windclan's leader has a lot to prove.

a large chocolate and white rosette tom with seaglass eyes. the first thing many see when looking at sunstar now is not his proud posture or un-windclan build, but the scarred stump that remains of his front left leg. a wound that would have killed most other cats took one of his lives; not even starclan could repair it.

Perhaps Frightkit had no business being here, amidst the bittersweet conversations of bone-weary adults. But onwards the girl trots, always happy to find a comfortable spot beside her favorite uncle, PeriPeriPeri. Plopping down beside him, she'd trail her gaze from each cat to the last, before following their eyes up to the skies above. She'd been told all her life about Starclan, but couldn't quite wrap her head around it. Those stars were supposed to be dead cats? What, then, did that make snow? Or the ash that billowed from the flames? Mouse lives? Insect ones? She wondered if she could request how her soul greets the mortal realm in her death - she wants to be a broken butterfly wing!

"I wanna die! " Frightkit announces excitedly, her tail lashing as intense moonlit hues glow, studying the path of stars, "If it means I can run all day, and sleep whenever I want, and see the whole world from way above like a bird, that sounds so cool! " She thinks, suddenly, about Bearflight's death, the mourning and grave digging, that side of death didn't seem quite so fun. But then, if Starclan was so great and fun, why mourn Bearflight when the boy was probably having a blast just above their heads?

After a moment, Frightkit scratches at the back of her ear, glancing at the adults around her. "Whats the point of bein' alive if it's more fun up there? " she asks, genuine curiosity behind the statement. Granted, Frightkit quite liked it down here, and she still had way too much to explore yet of Windclan's territory once she was finally allowed to leave (she shoots a glare at Sunstar with that thought), so death's enticement would not so easily sway her decision to keep her paws firmly set on the land of the living.
But the question remained to be answered.
Everyone here probably already explored everything Windclan had to offer, and with Sunstar's voice tinged with longing...what, exactly, was keeping any of them here?
