He's going to learn to fight. The thought is terrifying - more so than the waking nightmare that the fox had been. Acid burns his throat as the boy follows the two warriors - no, the warrior and their medicine cat he chides himself - out into the seclusion of the territory. Pelt twitches with nerves, his soft pawsteps unsteady and uncertain.
His whole life, the thought of raising his claws against another, even in jest, has sent waves of unease and sickness through his body and mind. But now he's been left with no choice - he can't do that again, he won't. He never wants to be helpless again. There is n reasoning with a predator, a fox doesn't understand words or emotions only hunger and blood and fear. He's heard the other threats they face are not much better - wild things that lack the intelligence and language cats share. Its terrifying.
It had taken quite a bit of cajoling on Vulturemasks part, just enough worry on Jaggedoaks part before the switch, and just enough security in the fact snowshadow was his new mentor to break down the childs walls enough to agree to this - to agree to learn how to fight. Its not what he'd imagined, it's not what he wants, but there's really no way to learn to protect himself all on his own, learn to fight without another cat at the receiving end of his paws. There's nothing else for it.
A shake of his head has him pulling up short, realizing they've arrived wherever it is they'll be training, and he shuffles for a moment, uncertain, indecisive. Anxious. That seems to be a reoccurring theme these days, he notes absently, but he closes clear blue eyes and takes a deep shuddering breath in, and lets it out as slow as he can manage, the tension leaking out of his frame with his exhale. I can do this. Eyes snap open, figure straightening in resolve, and he gives a quiet nod at the unspoken question he's certain is on everyone's mind. I'm ready.
