periwinklebreeze & 12 moons & demi-boy & he/they & windclan moor runner

There are few pastimes favorably looked at by windclanners, at least once you've reached apprenticeship and beyond. But one thing that seems to never change is the clans love of running. Kits, apprentices, warriors - hell, sometimes even elders; it's not uncommon to find them grouping up at rabbits run for a good old fashioned race. Today is hardly any different, save for the faces themselves, a twitchy periwinklebreeze stands at a scuff in the dirt he's made the starting line, mousepaw right beside.

Each limb is stretches slowly, as though to ease out he lingering tension in the hope of helping him win - or at the very least, prevent a cramp from ending his run prematurely. "Are you r-ready?" he asks quietly, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes as he crouches, leaning back on his hind legs to give him that extra bit of speed. He waits only long enough for the apprentices anwer before nodding, speaking once more - "On three th-then - one, two th-three!"

And then they're off.

Although Mousepaw was one that preferred the tunnels over the moors, he was a true WindClanner through and through and would participate in a race if given the chance, even if it was against someone who had a slight advantage over him. If he lost he'd be upset sure - who wouldn't be at least a little bit upset - but he knew that for the most part the races were all fun and good, especially when it was Periwinklebreeze that had offered it up to him. Peri was one of the few cats that the apprentice could say he genuinely liked to some degree - even despite the fact the other wasn't a tunneler and didn't really enjoy fighting. He was one of the warriors who enjoyed playing with the kittens as they were growing, and it gave Mousepaw's mother time to relax away from his questions and high energy, and that was something that was important for WindClan to have - cats to rely on.

So when Periwinklebreeze had talked with Mousepaw about racing he happily came with, excited for the chance to stretch his legs - even if it meant being out when it wasn't dark. He had noticed over the past moon that his vision outside of the tunnels was finally starting to get a little worse during the day, used to the darkness of the dimly lit underground paths, but he knew the territory like the back of his paw, so wasn't worried about whether or not the race would be fair. Are you r-ready? Mousepaw looked over to Periwinkle, smile tugging at the corner of his lips before quickly nodding his head and getting ready, crouching slightly lower to the ground before ears swiveled towards the other as he count down. The second the count was said, the apprentice pushed forward, and for once he didn't have a frown on his face.

Sedgepaw can't believe—no, he can't comprehend—he can't possibly understand why someone would start a race and not include him. He loves races! He usually wins them too, if he can help it, and he's usually not even that much of an ungracious winner. So it's shocking that someone wouldn't let him know.

He comes barreling out of camp when he hears Periwinklebreeze's soft voice filter through the gorse wall, but by then it's already too late. He and Mousepaw are off, Sedgepaw jutting to a halt just as they're kicking up dirt off of the starting line. The flattened, sandy expanse hosting their friendly race kicks up gritty plumes underfoot, and it's all he can do to watch them dissipate as the racers fly onward, quite literally leaving him in the dust with one disappointed "Aw, man!"

But watching a race is almost as fun as participating in one, so Sedge doesn't let his negativity linger for long. He saddles up with the rest of the small crowd and takes his pick among the racers. "GO MOUSEPAW!" he calls.

It would've been difficult to be a member of Windclan and not know about the clan's enthusiasm for running. Most adored it, and Rattleheart was - for once - not the exception. In spite of her small stature, most of her body was still made up of long leg, and she enjoyed the occasional opportunity to get out and go racing through the moors. Such a thing had become difficult ever since her eyes had fully adjusted to her job as a tunneler, but far from impossible. It was nice to see that the same held true for Mousepaw, the tunneler apprentice barreling alongside Periwinklebreeze the moment the word three was uttered.

Similarly, it also would've been difficult to be a member of Windclan and not know about the animosity that some held towards Periwinkle. While Rattleheart could understand why, that didn't really mean that she agreed with it. He wasn't a vicious presence in the clan, sure, but she wasn't really one either. She'd fight tooth and claw if necessary to keep those she loved safe, but she hardly agreed with the ferocity that seemed to fuel Sootstar and many of her followers. Unlike Periwinklebreeze, though, she had the advantage of a family that had been loyal through and through to Windclan - save for the nephew that she rarely ever spoke about nowadays.

Still though, wasn't it unfair for Periwinkle to be judged based off of the actions of others, rather than off his own merits?

With all of this swirling around in her mind, the dual-toned feline decided that she would even out the cheering coming from Sedgepaw nearby. She rose her muzzle to the sky, voice clear and loud as she called out. "Go Periwinklebreeze! Good luck!" It was such a silly, minor thing for her to offer her support over. Still, she hoped that it would help make the young moor runner not feel quite as alone within Windclan.

Things start out well, blackened paws thundering across the moorland earth in a rush as wind ruffles pale fur, blue eyes wide with the thrill of it all. He's not windclans fastest, but his longer limbs give him a brief headstart against mousepaw - enough, he thinks, that he may just win. shouts and hollers echo even against the roaring rush of adrenaline, and he beams happily - it seems rattleheart at least, is hoping for his win.

And then it happens, exactly what he'd feared from the start - that all to familiar painful twinge, only this time it is not in his jaw but his underside, the fiery burn spreading down to his limbs. Teeth grit against the pain, hoping to push past it, and he almost does. But then hind limbs twist and jerk, coiling taught just long enough to send him stumbling, tripping over himself, and though he manages to regain his balance without embarrassing himself it is too late - mousepaw has already passed him by.

He will not be winning this race, he thinks, but he still tries anyways - scrambling to catch up, hot on the apprentices heels once more. But would it be enough? Curse his bad luck.

Badgermoon did not participate in races often. He was swift, certainly, and nimble despite his broad body, and if his fellow competitors were from other Clans, he would've felt fairly confident in securing a victory. As it was, however, he could not hope to outrun his fleet-footed Clanmates, and the heat of competition tended to rile things up in himself that he preferred to keep tucked away. Therefore he felt no sorrow at missing out on participating in the race, instead meandering over and sitting carefully beside Rattleheart. He offered her a small grin before returning his attention to the event at hand: the great race! Mousepaw and Periwinklebreeze, two young cats Badgermoon liked, even if he did not know either especially well. "Go, go! Get him!" hollered the deputy, relying on his favorite tactic of "rooting for an unspecified contender in a competition". He winced slightly as Periwinklebreeze crash-landed, but gave an approving smile as the point tom pushed himself back upright and kept running. "That's the spirit!"

( 🐍 ) Much like Badgermoon, Venomstrike didn't partake in races often and that was mainly due to the fact it either ended up in him tripping over his own paws and making a fool of himself or... He got carried away. The moor runner having caught sight of Periwinklebreeze and Mousepaw running alongside one another, the dark furred tomcat approaching and briefly brushing shoulders with Rattleheart only to offer her a smile. His gaze turns once more in the direction of the racers and can't help but wince slightly when he notices Periwinklebreeze struggling, he hopes that the younger feline is alright and the thought subsides when they regain their balance.

"Go go go!" Venomstrike starts to cheer for nobody in particular, he wouldn't mind racing somebody at some point though he's more than happy to simply watch. Maybe he'd get his energy out later.

There was something about the rushing wind through your fur as you ran through the moor. It was almost relaxing, your paws hitting the ground, the rush of adrenaline as the urge of going faster became stronger. And competition was quite well known to the young Tom.

He was much more a fan of sparring, so far learning quickly different ways to dodge or avoid certain attacks. Ways to outsmart, kind of. Even if he wasn't the smartest of apprentices and picked things up quickly, he had stubbornness and determination on his side. And at least there was that.

The apprentice would sit back though, a grin on his maw as he too, cheered. "GO MOUSEPAW! YOU GOT THIS!" He yowled onward for his fellow apprentice, the apprentice almost prancing at the excitement that would unfold.

He only cheered for the apprentice because going against an experienced warrior was a feat in itself.
