She is not well. She feels as though she is on fire, her throat is sore beyond anything she's ever felt before, and her body feels like it could be crushed under her own weight.

The sun is beginning to rise, and she cannot fall back asleep. Is this the sickness going around? She needs to move, needs to go to Wolfsong. She tries to will herself to move, but her body refuses to listen.

She refuses to lay here helplessly until someone notices her vulnerability. They'll take advantage of it, try to kill her and call it mercy, probably. Or they'll simply drag her out of camp and leave her to die somewhere.

But she realizes.... Wolfsong is pregnant. Should she really go to him? She could be putting him and his kits in danger. She would never forgive herself if he got sick. But she has to do something...

She tries again to force her body to move. She manages to rise, and with all the energy she can muster, she stumbles slowly to the medicine den. It feels like an arduous journey, one that exhausts her before she even reaches her destination. She comes to rest a tail length away from the den.

"W-wolfsong...?" She calls weakly, voice hoarse.

She trusts Wolfsong more than any other cat in this clan, the first adult who showed her any kindness. And now, she has to put her life in his paws. It's terrifying, but she has no choice...

She just hopes she doesn't hurt his kits. The thought terrified her, and she almost wants to turn around and either away somewhere far away from here.

(( @WOLFSONG MEDDIE TAG NO NEED TO WAIT THOUGH ))

── .∘°°∘. ── He understood the gravity of his new responsibilities when Sootstar first named him medicine cat in the wake of Vulturemask's death. But it is altogether different to understand that wounded warriors rely on his experience than it is to watch them slowly sicken without effective treatment. SkyClan had lost their warrior even despite Dawnglare's experience— what can Wolfsong do in his stead? I cannot allow such doubts to get the better of me, or I may as well kill them myself.

He swallows, closing his eyes and inhaling deeply, kits stirring in his belly as though sensing his distress. For a moment, he thinks he's imagined his name, but dirt stirs nd he turns toward the entrance to find Azaleafrost just outside, visibly weakened and ill. "Azaleafrost," he rasps, emerging from the den to support her before she crumples. "Just a little farther. Do you think you can make it? Lean on me; we will get you to a nest together." His heart is a rabbit's battering paws, disturbing his ribcage, and his kits echo it. I know, my dears, but I care for her and WindClan and she needs me. She is meant to be among WindClan's strongest— she has proven herself time and again, and he refuses to think that she will not continue to do so.

WOLFSONG of WINDCLAN FORMER ROGUE TURNED MEDICINE CAT. 36 MOONS, HE/HIM, NPC X NPC. MATES WITH SUNSTRIDE (07/05/2023). BIOGRAPHY, PINTEREST, & PLAYLIST.
  • ★★★☆☆ WOUNDS: You're (mostly) in safe paws. You'll know if he's less experienced if he asks for your permission to try a treatment. No wound can scare him away from knowledge. — ★★★☆☆ INFECTION: He can prevent most infections. If you feel feverish, let him know— he'll hum thoughtfully over herbs and sniff your wound before saying, "With your blessing..."
  • ★☆☆☆☆ ACHES & PAINS: If you complain to him of pain, he'll ask where. If it's a headache, you'll likely feel a bit better. For anything else, "Try this, if you'd like, and tell me how you feel." — ★☆☆☆☆ BROKEN BONES: At best. he can ask you to remain lying down in the den. He may try to distract you with conversation while he considers what herb to feed you.
  • ★★★★★ TRAVELING HERBS: Going somewhere? No worries; Wolfsong knows just what you need to stay hale and healthy during your journey. The rest is up to you. — ☆☆☆☆☆ KITTING: He doesn't remember what it was like to be born. Coincidentally, that is the extent of his familiarity with kitting. At least he won't leave you without moral support.
  • ★☆☆☆☆ POISONS: It's best if you avoid eating anything unfamiliar to you— it's probably just as unfamiliar to Wolfsong. The best he can do is offer you yarrow and sit with you. — ★★☆☆☆ ILLNESS: If it's white or greencough, you'll likely recover. Otherwise, prepare for odd concoctions and the usual request that you consent to a little trial-and-error.

Unlike Wolfsong, whose heart beats with love and care, his own begins to rage against its enclosure when he sees them. A weak, panting Azaleafrost against his mate's rounded side. He hears those gentle words, words that she does not deserve, bringing sickness to his den, but he just as swiftly sees her again. Not an infected wraith spreading only sickness and death, but Azaleafrost. A warrior of WindClan who had proved a great deal to become who she is now. It must be Wolfsong's belief that steels him now, even if it had not been shared in words. She would prove her strength again, and she would care for Wolfsong the way that any WindClanner would. Their healer, his mate, does that not matter more than anything else? More than this task itself, or the illness that comes for them all? That he loves him, that he would follow him through the mountains once more if only he should ask. That he would take the illness from this den upon himself, if only it were asked of him.

"Azaleafrost," he exhales, and forgives her for what she has done already. The warrior bounds closer to support the younger's other shoulder, to press her between the two thick-furred toms so that she might not lose her balance at all. "Tell me what you need of me," Sunstride pleads of his mate, "for any of their sakes."

  • SUNSTRIDE. named for his coloration and his bold chasing of fate.
—— cis male, he - him. approx. 40 moons old. lead warrior of windclan + former rogue.
—— gay, monogamous. mate to wolfsong from 07.05.2023. npc x npc, no larger family.
—— has recently regained some of his earlier lightness, but maintains his steady facade.

sunstride is broad and bold– a creature standing above most of windclan, though not a beast beyond its borders, with fur that flames red and deepens to a burnt amber with every whorl and stripe. his eyes, in comparison, are a pale summer's blue, still as bold as the rest of him.

SOOTSTAR
Sootstar eyes the weak Azaleafrost wearily as she is supported by Sunstride and Wolfsong. Instead of rushing to aid, though there was likely nothing she could do anyhow, she takes a few paw steps back. As the two tom's lead her to the medicine cat's den she says nothing but her gaze darkens, would this be their second case? Had the disease really traveled all the way from SkyClan to WindClan? With frustration her tail lashes.

Cottonpaw has kittenish memories of young Azaleafrost; truly not much different than today (aside from the illness, of course.) She recalls the trials and tribulations the bicolor she-cat had gone through, albeit through the lens of kitten-blue eyes. Regardless of how fantastical the medicine cat apprentice may remember the other's journey to warriorhood - she had made it, and now she's threatened by the sickness that plagues all of the Clans. Is this really how it must go?

She's stilled by her mother for a moment, having departed from the medicine den in order to find fresher moss for the nests. Cottonpaw casts Sootstar a forlorn glance, a spot of fear fluttering in her chest. She isn't sure what she can say to the elder she-cat, if anything at all, and so she dips her head out of respect and trots towards the trio. "I'm here," she murmurs quickly, skirting around them. She eyes the open nests for a few heartbeats before dropping her moss into one and quickly, yet haphazardly, patching up the dried spots. "She can lay here, yeah?" Cottonpaw offers.

There's no clamor that draws Luckypaw's attention, no frantic shouting or coppery tinge to the air; it's only by chance that he happens to be passing by, gaze passing over the scene for a moment before he begins to process, steps faltering. Was something wrong with Azaleafrost? As soon as the thought enters into his head, he knows it's silly - clearly there's something wrong, what with the way she's leaning so heavily on Wolfsong and Sunstride, and, of course, the fact that she's at Wolfsong's den in the first place. This isn't like any sort of weakness he's seen before, only able to recall jagged lines of red inflicted by other cats, and it sets him ill at ease immediately, fur just starting to stand on end. Was this...was this the sickness they had talked about at the gathering? He hadn't gone, of course, so he doesn't know all that much about it, but it was supposed to be something like this, right? Other cats had fallen ill, too, he's pretty sure, but truthfully, Luckypaw doesn't know much about it, having spent so much time out of camp and in the tunnels lately. Some cat in SkyClan had died, hadn't they? What if that happened here, too? What if...what if Azaleafrost went into Wolfsong's den for treatment and never came back out again, joining the stars above? Even though he hardly knows her, the very thought sends a shiver down his spine; no WindClanner should have to suffer a fate like that, withering away like that.

Icy fear begins to creep into his heart, watching the shuffle of cats shifting around. The sickness could spread to others - that's how WindClan must have gotten it, after all - and for the first time the weight of the idea starts to sink in. No longer is this strange illness just a tale to worry over, to turn over in his head and then set aside in favor of lighter things; no, this is clearly something real, and right in front of him. Were they all going to grow ill? If Wolfsong gets sick, then who's going to save them? Luckypaw likes Cottonpaw, fleeting yet fond memories from his kithood serving as testament, but she's hardly had time to learn anything - besides, what if she got sick, too? Suddenly, the distance he's already found himself doesn't seem to be enough, though it's only now that the apprentice realizes he's been standing there staring this whole time, watching with wide eyes as though this is some kind of spectacle. If he were the one sick, he certainly wouldn't want an audience, and so he averts his gaze, willing his paws to move even as his emotions clash with one another. Should he offer to help, too? Sunstride certainly hadn't been summoned. And yet, maybe he'd be overstepping - after all, Wolfsong and Cottonpaw surely know way more about what to do, and if they really needed more help, they'd ask. Not that he really wants to be asked in the first place, though; guilty as he feels, Luckypaw would rather stay far away from anyone who might pass on the illness, however that worked.

❀ I AM SORRY THIS IS ALWAYS HOW IT GOES ❀

periwinklebreeze & 13 moons & demi-boy & he/they & windclan moor runner

Why? What has peri done to deserve this - what exactly is it about his existence that seems to draw starclans wrath? Azaleafrost's fragile frame is viewed with dull blue eyes, expression cold and vacant for once - he can't even muster the anger, the fear - no, he is only numb. Greif still clouds the boys every thought, a heavy weight pressing down upon his shoulders until he feels as though he is drowning in it. And now.. two more faces may be joining snailstride and dazzlepaw and wisteriapaw. Another grave amongst the rest, another friend to bury and mourn. There is nothing he can do but watch as wolfsong offers her his shoulder, as he leads her away - he is powerless, they all are. A sickness without a cure - all because of those cursed kittypets.
