a bitter little seed ⋆⁺₊ ☾ ⁺₊⋆ salamandersnap

⋆⁺₊ ☾ ⁺₊⋆ Swansong is becoming less and less a stranger to rage. The feeling coils in her hollowed-out chest, warm and serpentine; it finds a home. It slips out, drips from her forked tongue in small poison droplets... But she keeps it caged. It is a kindness, a measure of restraint. Not all are so gracious.

Swaying steps amble towards a fellow warrior, blank blue eyes half-lidded. They flicker to somewhere - just south of her face, hazily unfocused. Her neck is whole, unbloodied. They do not think of Applejaw. They do not think of how unfair it is, for death to take the righteous and not the cruel. "You seem... rather quick to abandon your leader, Salamandersnap..." they murmur, tone level. She has never been one to hold her tongue, and she spits insults at their father with a practiced ease. Their tail flicks. "Yet you accuse him of abandoning us... Have you no faith?" The words come out cold, carefully impassive.

How could Swansong accuse her of having no faith? How could she ignore how quickly the clan had seen leaders come and go within the past year? Did she normally accuse all her clanmates of such things? Or did she hate to admit the truth herself? "Just how long has it been since his disappearance?" Days? Weeks? She wasn't even sure anymore. Yet, somehow the clan seemed to be holding onto some false hope that he would return. Salamandersnap knew the truth. He was gone. He'd abandoned them and not returned, and he never would. Was it so wrong of her to accept the truth?

"Don't you think he'd have returned by now? Is that not abandonment of your clan? Leaving without comment? At the very least, if he hadn't abandoned us, he could have told Mirepurr where he was going and what was going on." She challenges with narrowed eyes, wondering if anyone of this was just wasted breath. Everyone was hostile and on edge. They were crumbling at the seams, a clan divided. A clan without a leader, slowly slipping into disarray with each passing day they hopelessly awaited Smogstar's return.

⋆⁺₊ ☾ ⁺₊⋆ How long has it been? The days bleed into a haze of mourning, mourning, mourning. She tires of it, tires of the constant ache. This, at least, gives her an outlet for the wailing void of loss. "It does not matter," they retort curtly. And as she continues, softer: "He would have returned, yes... If he could, he would have..." A quiet half-mumble, more to themself than anything. Salamandersnap's words only strengthen their resolve.

She takes a seat beside the warrior, plumed tail curling around her paws. Her empty gaze stares straight ahead. "You... assume abandonment. So quickly you assume, and yet... My father has been nothing but loyal. Did he not serve as deputy for moons upon moons...? He was blessed... Ordained by StarClan to lead, and us to follow..." Her whole life, he's been there to look to for guidance. For all the qualms his clanmates may have had with his attitude, at least he was respected. As deputy, then leader - but his ascension ended far too soon. They glance over, looking at the warrior out of the corner of their eyes. "And still, you brand him traitor. Do... Do you hear yourself, Salamandersnap?"

The half-mumble gives her a cruel sense of victory in their conversation, glancing over as Swangsong sits beside her. The two had never truly gotten along, their personalities often clashing as they were now. However, something seems to have shifted in this conversation, allowing for a more freely flowing conversation to occur between the women.

"With how many leaders we've been through in our lives? It's hard to say otherwise." She begins, her tone flat as she tries to find a less harsh way of putting this. "We all know that he wouldn't outright abandon Shadowclan. But then again, we know he wouldn't willingly leave and not return either, even though that's what all the evidence we've found has told us. What else are we to believe other than abandonment?" Hearing that a parent was lost or missing was bad enough she supposed. She could understand why Swangsong was upset that she was claiming abandonment, however, if it were her father? She'd want the truth, even if the clan was claiming abandonment. Hell, she'd probably feel the same way. So why didn't Swansong?

Still, Swangsong challenged her despite her own argument. Shaking her head she too blankly stares ahead. "I'd still be saying the same if it were my own family member. I'd rather be faced with the truth than to hold onto false hope."

⋆⁺₊ ☾ ⁺₊⋆ Swansong grew up with whispers of the curse placed upon ShadowClan's leadership known yet never seen. She was too young to know Pitchstar or Briarstar, but their names lingered in the most shadowy parts of their thorn-tangled swamp. Stability was a fickle thing, tenuous under Chilledstar and just as much so under their father. They have no illusions about ShadowClan's favor among the stars. They level Salamandersnap with an impassive gaze, tail tapping against their paws subtly. "...You misunderstand me, I believe," she says, tone cold and distant.

"We do know what kind of cat my father was..." Swansong catches herself with the slightest twitch downward of her maw. "Or, ah, is... Even you admit to this. That he would not abandon us..." They turn more fully to face the quill-furred warrior, and their expression is nothing but hollow.

"My quarrel with you... Is that you have taken my father's name..." Claws slip from their sheathes for only a moment, and in a flash of movement comes close enough for their whiskers to touch. Anger flickering across her empty eye, voice contorting into a rasping snarl. "And smeared it through the mud."

And then, all at once, the anger disspitates. She sits back upon her haunches, and her tone is pleasant once again. "If we were to find him... Rotting by the side of the Thunderpath or taken prisoner by rogues, perhaps... Then, would you feel remorse, hm? Could you face him... or his corpse... and still call him a coward...?" Perhaps, she thinks, it is herself that Salamandersnap speaks of moreso than Smogstar. Would she call her own kin a coward, they wonder? Would she be so quick to abandon them, to assume them traitors? She waits patiently for a response, unblinking.

She misunderstood her? How could that be? Shaking her head, her jaws part to respond, but is cut off before she can utter a single word. Frowning, she takes note of Swansong's slip up. Of course she had to cover up how she stated was rather than is. Snorting, she shakes her head as she continues, accusing her of smearing Smogstar's name through the mud. "If he had the ability don't you think he would have communicated with Starlingheart and Marblepaw? Or even Mirestar?" The possibility of Smogstar being alive was something that had crossed her mind, but she wouldn't admit that she was beginning to feel that he was dead at this point.

"Should he return alive, then yes I will stand in front of the clan and tell him to his face that he was a coward for betraying his clan like that. Should it be something more sinister... well...." She trails off, unsure of how to respond. A coward is still what he would be, for he made no attempt to tell the clans leadership that he wasn't coming home. By her definition that was something only a coward would do.
