Under the guise of taking a solo excursion to the dirtplace, Lionpaw sits alone in SkyClan's burial grounds, dim blue eyes lingering on a mound of earth buried with flora of varying types. This is where Blazestar rests; Lionpaw tries not to think about what remains underneath his paws and instead imagines his father's spirit manifesting beside him as he engages in a one-sided conversation, "I don't understand how Skyclaw could do such a thing. How he could have so much hate in his heart." Lionpaw scowls disapprovingly with a solemn shake of his head. Flamewhis─Flamestar had broken the grave news of Howlingstar's slaying and the short-lived yet tyrannical reign of his older half-brother. Although Skyclaw had denounced Lionpaw's very existence at a previous gathering, effectively breaking his heart and crushing his spirit, he had wanted to see the good in his kin. What would possess Skyclaw to kill his own blood?
His shoulders sag, head slowly bowing as he succumbs to defeat. Lionpaw has never experienced such emotional turmoil in his life; he loved his siblings, and upon discovering that he had half-siblings in ThunderClan, he wanted to love them too. Now, he wasn't so sure that he could. "I... I wanted things to be different, Pa. I really did." They could have embraced one another as brothers. Lionpaw, along with Fireflyglow and Howlfire, could have changed Skyclaw's mind about kittypets. They could have told him how great Blazestar was and how much he loved him, even if they never knew each other. The chocolate torbie point had never met his father, either, but he did not resent him for it. He had done his duty as a leader and had served SkyClan nobly.
Weighted eyes brim with tears now, a breeze offering a soothing caress across his cheek as if in place of a gentle paw. "Burnstorm's from ThunderClan, but... he's my kin. Am I really supposed to treat him as an enemy?" Lionpaw hates that circumstances couldn't have been different. Why couldn't Burnstorm, Skyclaw, and the others have been born in SkyClan? Why was their family so... complex?
They stare down at the grave site, sorrowfully acknowledging the fact that they would never receive answers. He was not a medicine cat nor was he a leader. A small part of him wonders why he even bothered confiding in a mound of dirt, but a strange comfort accompanies the idea of Blazestar smiling down upon him. "SkyClan is lost without you. They all miss you so much. I..." What was he supposed to say? How could he miss someone he's never even met? And yet, somehow, he does miss his father in the strangest sense. He mourns the possibilities that could have been; Blazestar teaching him the ways of a warrior, watching him progress through his training, eventually bestowing a full name upon him.
Another breeze coasts through the pines, causing the boughs to bristle and waver. As if trying to listen for a voice in the distance, Lionpaw closes his eyes.
