sensitive topics A HIGHER STANDARD ✦ MAGPIEPAW

A blur of gray and black weave between the trees, using the cover of the night to their advantage. Excitement hums through every taut muscle, every pawstep taken... and although the risk of danger is imminent, well- Eveningpaw is notorious for being an optimist. She could focus on whatever lurks behind the shadows, or she could relish in the newfound freedom she has found beside Magpiepaw. Ze has been rather easy to convince... or maybe it is just Eveningpaw's mind coloring in the blanks for her.

Either way, she has a companion, and the whole wide world to explore.

"Everything looks a lot less scary now," she comments, forcing herself into a pace that matches Magpiepaw's. It's almost impossible to believe that moons have passed since her unfortunate attempt at heroism... for what it's worth, she did find Hazecloud, but she had done next to nothing to free her from the Twoleg-made prison. Eveningpaw's survival is a miracle, but so is the fact that Lichenstar did not punish her for her endeavors... aside from a little talking-to, something equally as scary. "I jumped at every little sound when I sneaked out way back then. Don't tell anyone!"

Her nose begins working — prey is why they are here anyway, not mere sight-seeing. "Do you smell that? What is it?" Something wafts on the gentle breeze, too unfamiliar for Eveningpaw to gauge just yet. She will have to pester Gladefrost about it later... when she's free.

〕Why had it agreed to this? Why did they subject themselves to things that they otherwise wouldn’t do? Maybe it was due to the fact they did care a little bit about their clanmates and would rather it have been it she asked to join in this late night travel than someone else. At least this way it could ensure safe return- if possible. Though since the rogue attack, Magpiepaw had been edgier than usual. More paranoid and unsure of things, but they tried to keep a brighter mindset despite the inner turmoil they felt.

The hush of night laid thick on heavy air as the warmth of the day was seeped into the shadows. Eveningpaw was at their side as they walked and the young she-cat seemed more cheery about this night hustle she set out for. They didnt really understand it, why they wanted to do it at night of all things, but alas it had agreed and thusly- was now out there.

The night use to bring comfort and safety to the young apprentice, but now it only had fear and horrors etched into its corners. Still, Magpiepaw trusted Eveningpaw to know what she was doing for the most part and besides it was the night. Everything should be sleeping and they’d just head back into camp without another thought about it.

The black and grey cat speaks about everything being less scary and they snort, highly in disagreement but they remember when they felt the same. When things had been less real in the world. Then states she use to jump at everything way back and they couldnt help the slight smirk tugging at their lips. Magpiepaw nods, “Your secret is safe with me,”

They keep walking and they open their mouth to taste the thicker air, but the muggy heat was making it harder to pick between that and actual prey scent. Though Magpiepaw wasnt truly focusing on finding prey as they looked around the darkened forest, but she asks if it smells it too.

They nod and furrow their brow, they knew this scent- didnt they? Magpiepaw furrows their brow slightly and tilts it to the side, before then horror flickers across blue hues in the shine of moonlight.

From the shadows of reeds, snarling was sounding as if woken from a deep slumber. Wild, hard amber eyes glowed in the light of the moon as it pulled back lips to show jagged, yellowed teeth. The black and white apprentice bristle instantly and acted out of pure thoughtlessness, putting itself between the growling, scared creature as it suddenly broke into a lunge towards the pair.

Magpiepaw appears receptive to her joke, and that is all it takes for Eveningpaw's bounce in her step to return with its usual mirth. It's nice to entertain someone new every once in a while; their black-and-white pelt is nothing unfamiliar to her, but she can probably count their interactions so far on one paw. Eveningpaw's list of friends only ever grows... and she couldn't be happier about it.

Its blue eyes narrow as its brows furrow, and Eveningpaw feels compelled to look at whatever Magpiepaw is looking at. They are more experienced than her thanks to a head-start in apprenticeship, so she has zero qualms about following their lead in this instance.

"What is it, Magp-"

Leaf-bare is still moons away, but the air manages to freeze all around them anyway, frost catching Eveningpaw wholly off-guard. Her eyes stare forward- wide, unblinking, and in total disbelief over the orange pelt she sees. It's just a trick of the light... right? That bushy tail and those slender limbs — a predator she's heard enough of to know the risks of. Fox. "O-Oh..."

How did she manage to do this again? Despite Lichenstar's teachings, despite Hazecloud's corrections, despite the fear her siblings had felt... Eveningpaw did it again. Except this time, there is someone else who is in just as much danger.

Sickly amber eyes turn on the pair then. There is a horrible snarl that emerges from the creature before it lunges, and Eveningpaw flinches at Magpiepaw's sudden movement. They stop between herself and the fox, and horror is evident in every strand of fur of hers that stand on edge, transforming the ridges of her spine into the hide of a hedgehog. It's coming, and it is fast. "Get out, get out! Quick!" Panic rises like bile, and Eveningpaw fastens her teeth in Magpiepaw's scruff in an attempt to get it out of the fox's way.

〕It didnt know what it was doing. The deep embers of red fur glowed under pale moonlight, glint of fangs was charging full throttle at them as if being chased by something. The fox wasnt right, something was off but yet they still risked it. Eveningpaw was only a few moons younger then them, only just begun life while they had had their fair share of fights. They had a least a little more of an effect to defend, even if minor.

Though then teeth met its scruff, and they stagger back slightly with panic rising in their chest. What was she doing! Neither of them had an idea of what to do and their paws felt like they had locked themselves into the grassy ground under paw. Yet Magpiepaw found purchase and shoved Eveningpaw from their scruff.

Blue eyes flared at her and they snapped out, “Get help- now,” That was all they could manage out before they felt hot breath on their fur, and they had to turn and managed to slide under the creatures paws. Magpiepaw felt fear strike their chest and it scrambled up, the fox too preoccupied with moving prey as it whipped around on the black and white cat.

There was a loud screech as mangled fangs snagged the Riverclanner by the shoulders. The ruddy predator shoved Magpiepaw to the ground, growling, snarling, and they felt immense pain flare through both shoulders as teeth sank in. The sour tang of iron flood their nose and dripped down black shoulder fur and it had to struggle, wiggle and thrash as their life truly depended on it. Stuck on its belly, Magpiepaw could only risk rolling sideways for their white front paws to connect with the foxes face. Clawing at its eyes and muzzle in a rage as it flared through them, mixed with pain from now open bite wounds on both sides of their shoulder. It was a frenzy move, and they could feel tearing in its wounds as fangs dragged upwards from their rolling.

It knew it couldnt defend this forever, they couldnt kill a fox alone even if they were all of Tigerclan.

Hurry Eveningpaw!

Magpiepaw had rejected her attempts at dragging them back — and Eveningpaw, evidently some sort of coward in spite of what she thought of herself all this time, had succumbed to their will. She had barely heard the screeches of the fight breaking out as she ran towards camp, blood roaring in her ears and overwhelming all her senses. This sort of fear... it comes close to a few things she had felt throughout her life so far; worrying for the safety of Hazecloud, agonizing over Lichenstar losing a life, the unlikely disappearance of Riverpaw and the uncertainty that comes with it, the ever-present rattle in Shellpaw's inhale...

All of those things had happened without hope of control. Eveningpaw had no say in those matters; but now, she was the reason for the risk Magpiepaw was facing.

Eveningpaw obeys; runs; gets help. There is a patrol at her heels- or beside her, now that they are encroaching on the scene. She does not wish to anger her mother any further... she allows Lichenstar, Moonbeam and Midnightash to go in front, no doubt already bracing for a fight. There are so many things about them she wishes to have already... but in her haste to get better, she has only put herself further behind. The only thing left to do is to look at them and admire.

Pebblepaw, Graypaw and Horizonpaw create a sort of defensive shield around her; perhaps it is not entirely intentional, but the trio anchors her and keeps her head afloat the sea of emotions as they arrive to where she had abandoned Magpiepaw. Blood wafts on the air, lazy but evident... she can only hope more comes from the fox and not her fellow apprentice.

Her ears rotate in an attempt to hear before seeing — but the silence is louder than anything else. Everything is quiet... calm, even, despite everything. Foreboding locks Eveningpaw into a terrified haze. Is the fox gone...?

"Muh- Magpiepaw?"

-ˋˏ ༻❁༺ ˎˊ- There was a lone silence levitating over the small spot in the Riverclan expensive territory. The calm was disheartening and there wasnt a single stir movement for a long minute. Flashes of teeth wildly split their mind, the pain stinging their shoulder was becoming overwhelming and their head- it was like it was trying to split in two. Though it didnt move as it had dragged itself into the confines of tangled tree roots, the fox had run off from whatever had been chasing it or whatever had caused it such immense fear. It had to have been no more than a couple months old really from the wildness of the fight.

Though the only pieces it could really pick out was the slam as the fox had picked it up and thrown it. While their more major injuries were their puncture wounds on either side of their shoulders, one torn more than the other, it had a bleeding head as well. A scratch or cut of some kind from hitting the ground after landing. From there is when it scrambled and clawed for the tree roots. Where it had curled up and hoped, prayed even for once in their life, that something would go right. That Eveningpaw had gotten help as they doubted they would be able to get to camp in this state- if they were awake to see it. It felt like the whole world was crashing down around it and it felt its blue gaze flutter slightly closed.

Then- there was a voice.

Amongst the silence, it was stammering and terrified as it felt. Still, the young apprentice forced themselves up with winces of pain in each step as their shoulders couldnt hold their weight up anymore. Magpiepaw refused to die here, refused to go down this easily and it was certain of this.

O-Over here,” They weakly call out but it didnt feel like its voice was enough, and Magpiepaw pulled themselves out from the tree roots and a few inches from them before collapsing to the ground.

Blood dripped down a white-striped face, getting into a blue eye almost from a open cut on the head but the real blood came from the black fur at its sides. While the fox hadn’t aimed to kill, it certainly did damage and Magpiepaw tried to not let the fury boiling in it cause a rift.

Sure they were upset with Eveningpaw, she had brought them out here to hunt after all, but it wasnt her fault. The fox was random chance and it was unlikely they’d see it again anytime soon. At least she got help like they asked, “Eve-!” They call out again this time a little louder and their head feels so heavy suddenly, their eyelids threatening to close.

Starclan have mercy.

Horizonpaw doesn't know what to expect. Fear is a bitter thing sitting in his stomach, sour and curdled, and it takes everything in him to follow his siblings into the fray. To follow his mother, to trust in the instincts of everyone here. Trust, a delicate thing- he had it inherent in his family, but in Graypaw, or in Midnightash? He couldn't lend that feeling to them without some kind of price, some kind of assurance it was real and true.

He swallows thickly as they arrive, his green eyes scanning the scene. Blood, it was thick in the air, he could smell it. His heart was thudding in his ears, yet he moved to press close to Eveningpaw, letting Graypaw and Pebblepaw stand forward of them if they wish. A nervous glance is given to his sister, then snapped forward as something reveal itself, sanguine-tinged and all wobbles and feint. From tree roots does Magpiepaw climb free, and a sharp inhale followed from Horizonpaw.

"Stars, they're alive!" He cried out weakly, ears shoving forward. He didn't move yet- no, he was still scanning, trying to see if the coast was clear, trying to see if the fox was truly gone without moving yet.

  • As much as she tried not to find fault in random chance, it was harder to ignore how entirely preventable an 'accident' like this was. How simply it would've been to just follow the rules. It's always the rules with her... Because her over-confidence encourages bravery... and bravery becomes stupidity very quickly. Ice sharp eyes glance towards Eveningpaw as she warbles a call for her missing (potentially dead) friend and in that moment, Lichenstar notices a hollowing lack of empathy for her daughter's fear.

Anger makes you cruel. Shaking her head, the lynx point is pulled from her glowering at the sound of Horizonpaw's shocked proclamation and the stumbling mass of fur wandering from the foliage to greet them. "Stop," she meows, sallying forward to support the crimson stained apprentice as every movement invites more rivulets of blood to cascade down its body. "Midnightash.... make sure... the fox is gone," she offers a small nod of reassurance, an 'I'll follow soon' while she waits for Moonbeam to assume her position and release her leader from the status of stalwart assistant.

"Little echo... come here," beckoning Horizonpaw closer, a promise that he would be safe and that he could be of some help, "Anything... she needs.... help her with," hoping to give Moonbeam more support than just a crowd of onlookers.

જ➶ Her gaze is harsh but also full of sharp anxiety. Worry clings to her like a cold claw she can not shake as she follows Eveningpaw to the place where her friend may potentially be dead. Dead all because of a young apprentice who doesn't understand the consequences of their actions. In her mind she has little love for Eveningpaw at the moment given the circumstances and her heart aches. Especially when she finally can lay eyes on Magpiepaw. They are hurt, bleeding and she moves forward as if to go to them. Her tail fluffed out but Lichenstar speaks and she shifts her gaze to her leader. Make sure the fox has gone. "Okay..." Her throat is filled with emotion and she quickly looks back to Magipe before allowing herself to fall back.

Her body blends with the darkness, fire glinting as she patrols the area. She swears if she finds that fox she will kill it with her own claws. It looked like it played with her friend. Her best friend and the idea alone ignites deep anger in her gullet.

That Magpiepaw is still alive may be a twisted blessing or a true miracle, depending one where the apprentices injuries swayed. Hazecloud would always hope for the latter, that the fox hadn't left her and now they would arrive only to watch her succumb, but she dared not linger on such pessimism now.

Hazecloud turned her head away from the overwhelming scent that wafted from Magpiepaw's beaten form, jaw clenched as she prayed Gentlestorm's training would leave Moonbeam far more equipped than she may have once been.

"I'll go with you." She offered to Midnightash, giving one last glance towards her kits. Eveningpaw's recklessness would be lesson enough tonight. If Magpiepaw survived, it would be due to bear the shame as well.

She quietly padded ahead of Midnightash, steps near silent, each breath careful while she remained alert. If the fox decided to come back for another round, it would at least be severely outnumbered this time.

She doesn't need to be told to stop, ears pricked as the pale moggie silently moved forward with the rest of the group to get to where Magpiepaw lie - hopefully alive. When the group neared she paused, ears swiveling on her head to listen to things around her just as Lichenstar spoke the words into existence, ordered Midnightash to check to make sure the fox was actually gone as Hazecloud moved forward to go with the newer warrior and just as they began to move so-too did Moonbeam, eyes focused on the older apprentice and nothing else. Any thoughts of the stupidity and recklessness of the actions of the two leaving camp without a warrior were damped by the need to do her duty and the second she was close enough to Magpiepaw to get a full understanding of it's new wounds she would drop the bundle of herbs at her paws and begin her work.

"Chew these." She'd order the monochrome feline quickly before practiced paws moved and began to carefully clean up blood on wounds before instructing Horizonpaw had he followed after her to press down on them as she chewed up herbs to place upon wounds, nose wrinkling at the thought of the creature that did this and the wounds they inflict to go into infection quicker than others she had seen and dealt with. Once everything was said and done she'd move back before head would motion upwards towards the younger apprentice once more - get up, the order meant - before she'd move to the opposite side of Magpiepaw. "You've gotta get up now - carefully - so we can get back to camp, Horizonpaw and I will be pressed against you."
