She’s not used to being waited on. She’d been apprenticed at three moons old, had been sent into battle only moons later, had trained for far longer than her own kits will have. Vividly, her first memory of being an apprentice is patrolling with Cicadastar, of Twoleg traps and her face splashed with blood after he had died for the first time. She stirs with the memory, tucking her paws beneath her thickening body; the easy snores of the kits is background static as she stares outward, into the riverlands. A silhouette darkens the opening of the nursery and the tortoiseshell turns, blinks.
“Oh. It’s… you.” A pair of mismatched eyes blinks back at her from outside, sunlit. A carp hangs from his jaws. “Is that for me?” Her voice is stiff, and she squirms backwards, as if to get away from the outsider as well as to give him room to enter. She watches with still blue eyes, less a river and more a lake without a breeze stirring the surface. “Thank you. I was hungry.” She flicks an ear, feeling strange—it’s unnatural, she thinks, having to thank a rogue, having to depend on a rogue for prey, but that’s the position she’s been put in thanks to Lichentail, Snakeblink, Hazecloud, and, ultimately, Smokestar, for allowing these cats to stay in the Clan.
The tortoiseshell bends to brush her tongue and teeth against the scales of the carp. Her eyes never leave Dawnstorm’s. After a moment of eating, she draws back, drawing her tongue neatly about her mouth and jaws. “Nervous about the battle?" Her sapphire gaze narrows. “About fighting your friends?”
