Kestreltalon had spent too much of her time resting, recently. First from her injury courtesy of Sootstar and second courtesy of the hawks. Strangely enough, she had actually put on a little weight. Being a part of a clan had its benefits, it would seem. She didn't know what to think about that, given all the grief it had caused her.
Either way, she was glad that she felt comfortable enough to step out of camp on her own again.
Her good eye was closed as she just let herself feel the breeze. It felt nicer, when she was on her own, she decided. Then she opened her eye and glanced at the horizon stretching out all around her. Oh, she had missed this. Without the walls of the camp or any cats around her to obstruct her view she felt so much safer. She let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding. This was gonna be fun.
Lowering herself down onto her haunches, she eyed the stretch of land before her. An empty, flat space she had picked out herself. It was hard to find anywhere like this outside the moors, at least in this size. It gave her a good amount of distance to cover. Just what she wanted. Kestreltalon knew she was a coward, knew she could not fight, knew that there were a thousand terrible things about her, but here she was the best cat to ever do it. No one would ever persuade her that there was a single cat faster than her.
Her muscles tensed.
Then she was off like a shoot, racing across the moors. Wind whipped through her fur and her muscles burned and it felt so good. She was out of shape and she could feel it, but she was still so fast. She pushed through the ache, she wanted to go faster.
A cackle of laughter echoed across the moors. This was what she lived for, this moment. Everything was perfect, she was flying across the ground and nothing else mattered. She felt so free.
Eventually though, the open stretch of land ended, and she was forced to skid to a stop. She had made good time, especially for being out of practice, but she was panting. Kestreltalon tilted her head back, stretching upward to try and find more air. Another laugh left her, giddy with exhaustion. She felt amazing.
"OH MY STARS YOU ARE FAST!"An excited squeal would sound not far from behind Kestreltalon and the familiar sepia coat of Sandwhisper found be seen bouncing over the tall grass as the warrior hurried over to her clanmate.
"That was amazing Kestreltalon! And I thought I was fast but pretty sure you've got me beat!" She would finally come to a stop just beside the molly, and Sandwhisper would smile warmly at the one-eyed molly as she purred, "Those hares better watch out once you're back to hunting, they won't stand a chance." She would look back towards the expanse of territory and her smile would grow brighter as she meowed cheerily, "Unless you feel up to hunting right now! Give us a reason to not hurry back to camp."
It hadn't been that fast. Far from being special impressive if asking her. Sunsetpaw didn't exactly understood why Sandwhisper was so quick to praise Kestraltalon like this. Maybe it was out of pity for the shecat who was like a black sheep in this clan after her rebellion against Sootstar. For what it was worth it seemed like Kestraltalon had got put into place after losing her eye to thier leader. " You two should race to see who is the fastest." Sunsetpaw suggested to the two warriors. Yes, it was a bit tempting to challenge Kestraltalon herself to show them all how fast she was but...she had little to prove to any of them she figured. It was not the warriors that was her rivals in this clan but the other apprentices. The warriors she could wait with until she had become a warrior herself.
She would say nothing when Sandwhisper suggested for them to hunt hares, that was a question she would let Kestraltalon answer on. Was she really ready for it though?. Had she overcome only having one eye now and felt confident enough to hunt with one eye?. Sunsetpaw was not sure if they had...She was grateful that she was not the shecat with one eye that was for sure. It would totally ruin her pretty face if she would ever lose one of her eyes...Starclan forbid for a such tragic fate to ever befall her.
"Someone's having fun, heh!" Galepaw remarked with a chuckle as he came bouncing over, clearly in a good mood. Though he felt confident that he could run circles round Kestreltalon if they were to pit their skills against the test. Though it seemed as though Sandwhisper was keen to drag the other off hunting. It was a little strange how friendly Sandwhisper was being, but he guessed that she was just the sort who happened to be a barrel of sunshine. It was nice to have cats like that around.
He came up alongside Sunsetpaw and he aimed to nudge her shoulder with his head in a friendly greeting. "Maybe we should have a team contest, see who can catch a rabbit the fastest. What do ya say?" It sounded like a fun opportunity and it also would benefit the clan if they caught anything.
An excited squeal cut into her ears and flattened them back against her head. Kestreltalon turned, her one eye wide as she regarded another cat bounding to her. In her joy she had forgotten that the moors were not as empty as they had once been. There had been a time when her cackle of laughter would not have drawn prying eyes. Sandwhisper's approach was a reminder that those days were long gone.
"Uh, thanks?" was all she could manage to reply in response to the flurry of compliments thrown her way. She shifted her weight beneath her.
Behind Sandwhisper, she spotted more shapes framed against the horizon. Her noise had apparently drawn more of her clanmates.
Her ear flicked when Sunsetpaw suggested a race. "I'd win easily." She stated bluntly, instinctively. It wasn't an attempt to be rude, it was matter of fact. This was the one thing she was good at, she would not be bested in it. What little pride she had demanded that much.
Kestreltalon was, however, loathe to head back to camp. At least as long as the snakeheart resided there. Any excuse to stay out on the moors was a good one. "Sure, hunting competition." She agreed quickly.
She had win easily?. Where did this molly get all of her arrogance from?!. Sunsetpaw said nothing and just smiled at her deciding she wouldn't waste arguments with her. Sandwhisper could prove herself all on her own if she wanted too by accepting that race. Sunsetpaw could have been satisfied with that, dismissing herself with a dip of her head and let this two warrior play games with one another but before she even could consider taking her leave a present was suddenly beside her. Someone had dared to touch her!. Who had that sort of nerve?!.
Sunsetpaw shifted her attention to the culprit who didn't understood personal space and...oh, it was Galepaw. Blinking her eyes the sepia would stare at them before a smile softly graced her lips. Who knew if it was for show or not. His idea of a competition sparked that childlike side of her Sunsetpaw always tried to keep buried underneath. " That sounds like a great idea Galepaw, but if so we should be in the same team. will be a good way for us to show the warriors how far we have come in our training, right?." her smile grow more, excited maybe but also she did not wanted to risk getting teamed up with Kestraltalon...Both of them might become warriors soon so this was a great opportunity for both of them to shine and to make this two warriors lose thier jaw by how much faster and greater hunters they were!.
She looked back to Kestraltalon and Sandwhisper, wondering what their responds would be. Maybe they where to scared to lose against two apprentices...
Excellent! It seemed that the others were taken by his little contest idea. The tom looked at Sunsetpaw and he felt a swell of excitement brimming within him when she suggested that they pair up to be on the same team. Two apprentices versus two warriors. It seemed a little one sided but he still had high confidence that they could still pull together a win if they put their training and knowledge to good use. "Good idea! And you're right too. Let's beat these warriors and prove ourselves!"
