( ☾ ) bright green eyes slide over the great watery expanse of river as the ghost striped smoke feline pads along the shoreline. the day is new and exciting, a watery sun peeking through weeping willow leaves that tickle the ground. beside the smoke, a lithe dark dappled girl, a mixture of coal and flames. fitting eyes of ember pierce into the smoke's hide, and she will turn to meet the gaze. "battle training today," willowroot announces, feathery tail flicking over their back as they cut away from the rivery path, rooting through undergrowth along a well-trod route to reach a sandy clearing. claw marks score the ground, outlines of previous training sessions gone right. padding to the shade of a quivering aspen, the former lead halts and addresses her charge again.
"you've got about a moon of training left in ya before warriorhood," she begins, gaze sparkling as she pictures the pride she'll feel when midnightpaw is finally self sufficiant. "we've got some work to do until then, but let that drive you. today, we're going to do a run through of the basics and see if you can incorporate some more advanced moves. use the terrain to your advantage." the ground is sandy, and small puddles dot the area where rainwater has not quite soaked into the earth yet. the warrior stands, drawing themself to their full height and allowing thorn sharp claws to peak out of black capped paws. "you may use your claws, but for starclan's sake, don't give moonbeam more to do. no heavy injuries. scratches are alright, but use your logic, okay?"
she's got a fierce one this time around, well different from the likes of ashblaze and robinheart in terms of temperament. willowroot has been trying to teach midnightpaw to channel her inner aggravation into her battle skills. she hopes the girl has been taking her advice to heart. "alright, whenever you're ready. your goal, incapacitate me and take this tree for your own." tail lashing, the battle hardened feline crouches in front of the shaking aspen, awaiting her apprentice's first move.

// here's this thread, finally! @MIDNIGHTPAW
if you'd like, here's a fun dice rolling way of doing this (but this is not necessary)! for this particular thread, let's say willow's defense is a 15. if you reach 15 on a d20, you get a good hit in. because midnight is an older apprentice, she can add 5 to a roll, so if the number she rolls plus her modifier adds to a 15, she hits. (this means she has to roll a 10 to hit.) if middy gets a natural 20 on the dice, it's a critical hit.
willow's got 50 hit points in this thread. if middy hits, she can "wound" by rolling 2 d8s. that added up equals how much damage middy does. if middy gets a critical hit, she adds a d4 to her "wound" rolls.
