battle royal | spar

Life doesn't discriminate
With his chores mostly completed for the day, Adderpaw was itching to burn some energy until Sunstride was ready to train him. Mismatched paws carried him throughout camp as he searched for a suitable sparring partner. Not just anyone would do it, they had to be a moor runner first and foremost. They also had to be of his standards and that alone dwindled his list of options down to nearly nothing. That is until he saw his brother returning from a patrol. Fire blazed within his belly at the idea of wrestling with his littermate after a few moons of training. "Harrierpaw. Come, lets spar. I want to test what i've learned." He also wished to evaluate what Harrierpaw has learned. Was Firefang doing a good job teaching him? With them being the sons of Sootstar and Weasleclaw it was an unspoken rule, a duty placed upon their shoulders to be the best amongst the clan. Flicking his tail he invites his brother to step closer before slipping into a battle ready pose. All of Sunstride's teachings whispered within his mind, placement, stance, evasion, it all came flooding back. With a curt nod of his head he urged Adderpaw urged his darker sibling to begin. Harrierpaw’s muscles are swore from yesterdays training session with Firefang. They had burned when he walked the territory earlier this morning, and guiltily he dreads having to return to the moors later. A strong warrior suffers in silence, the earthen furred Tom would remind himself, licking blood off his chin from a recent meal.

His attention is caught effortlessly by his brother. A spar? His eyes glimmer and his heart quickens with excitement, he forgets his soreness and rises to his paws. ”Okay.” He replies simply, but the growing smirk betrays his eagerness. Within a few bounds he reaches his litter-mate and eyes him up, how well has Sunstride trained him in battle this past moon? Firefang has shown him quite a bit, but it was mostly defensive moves thus far. Still… he was going to give this all he had, the last thing he needed was Adderpaw boasting for five sunrises.

Without warning Harrierpaw charges forward and aims to barrel his forehead right into Adderpaw’s chest. His aim is to fling the tabby backwards and knock the air from his lungs. If he could get him to fall to the ground it’d be an easy victory from there, all he’d have to do is pin.

Weaselclaw sees Adderpaw challenge Harrierpaw to a spar, and the tabby knows he won't be able to help himself. He has to watch how his sons' training is coming along. Respectively apprenticed to Sunstride, a lead warrior, and Firefang, a fierce and loyal she-cat, he is sure the display will be worth viewing. He sits nearby, but far enough to avoid being a distraction, his blue eyes slits as he concentrates on their movements.

Adderpaw gives Harrierpaw the chance to attack first, and Weaselclaw's eyes drift from his pale-pelted child to his quieter, dark-furred son. Watching Harrierpaw charge at his brother brings back a day four moons ago, harsh and cold, as his mate beheld both sons and he knew they would one day bring great strength and power to WindClan.

Even at four moons, Weaselclaw still firmly believes all of his kits are destined for greatness, that all Clans should fear their potential.

His brother wasted no time bounding forward wearing an eager smirk upon his features. Adderpaw's expression remains stoney, tail flicking in acknowledgement toward Weaselclaw, but it was all he could afford the tom right now. Sunstride warned him of the dangers any distraction could bring and he was glad to heed the lead warrior's words. If he hadn't, he might have missed the beginnings of Harrierpaw's charge. Tensing his muscles and locking his limbs he holds his stance, meeting his littermate's headbutt straight on with a heavy grunt falling from his jaws. He slides a little against the sandy terrain and staggers a step but recovers quickly. A small sacrifice for the closer proximity he was glad to have. Launching off his hind legs he now propels himself forward, forearms opening in an attempt to wrap them around his brother's neck and knock him to the ground.

Firefang wouldn’t miss this for the world, there was no better entertainment to her then watching her apprentice best his opponents; well other then the chance to best her own. Her eyes gleam with pride as she watches him spring into action, the win to her seemed assured but she still yowls her words of encouragement. ❝You got this Harrierpaw show no mercy! Kick ass and take names!❞ she laughs a boisterous sound; loud and crackly. She grins toothily eyes still keen and watchful even as she pad her way over to Weaselclaw to sit, head bowing respectfully to him before she utters a word.

❝He’s been doin’ well❞ she says her voice more whispered, she figures he would like to know. ❝Takes everything like a champ, he’s still got ways to go but he’s shapin’ up to be a great warrior❞ she can’t help but boast, she was hoping to increase the intensity soon her training sessions were rigorous enough she wasn’t the type to go easy - well until she started seeing any signs of fatigue but Harrierpaw was a resilient boy. He moved unencumbered by soreness today as if yesterdays training was only a far off memory.

Weaselclaw gives Firefang a delighted glance, taking just a moment to move his sapphire gaze from his brawling kits to her. "Are you putting him through the wringer yet?" He smiles and flicks her flank with his tail. StarClan knew he'd want every one of his kits' mentors to be as hard on them as he would be on his own apprentice -- harder, even, to match their potential.

After a heartbeat, he murmurs, "Sootstar chose correctly. Hopefully, he's got your fire." It's high praise coming from the lead warrior to someone still so young, but he means it. He shifts his concentration back to Harrierpaw and Adderpaw, wrapping his tail around his paws.

He has sat in prideful silence for too long. From the first calling of a spar, glee had begun to root itself within the warrior's chest. Respectable a cat as Firefang may be, she was a brutal and boisterous enemy to face. He has no doubt that his own cunning will show through in the way that Adderpaw fights, and that is more than enough to ensure him of victory. Though the jerks to stand as his apprentice's paws skitter, the voice within him warring for escape, to shout praise and reminders both, is fitfully silenced. Energy radiates off the burnished tom, his plumed tail lashing in clear excitement. For now, his worries have left him. All that matters is the battle that begins before him, and how it may come to its end. Regardless, Adderpaw has already pleased him greatly. The two of them would both shape up to fine warriors with time.

He tries to steady himself, surely he does, yet as his body thrums with energy, he cannot keep his enthusiasm contained. At the very least Sunstride manages to direct it towards his fellow warriors, shifting his pacing to circle behind the two. He is a heavy presence behind them, close enough that his shoulders press to each of their flanks, yet distant enough so as not to intrude upon their view of one another. "Come now, Firefang, how about we make this interesting? Whoever's apprentice wins, the other shall stand upon Outlook Rock and shout of the victor's greatness as a warrior and mentor." Though he's no intention of truly enforcing it, sea-glass eyes glitter with amusement and a challenge.

  • SUNSTRIDE. named for his coloration and his bold chasing of fate.
—— cis male, he - him. thirty-eight moons old. lead warrior of windclan + former rogue.
—— gay, but somewhat closeted. will not be open about his interests.  single, will be so.
—— seems comparatively stranger than who he was some moons ago, serious and cool.

sunstride is broad and bold– a creature standing above most of windclan, though not a beast beyond its borders, with fur that flames red at its base and deepens to a burnt amber with every whorl and stripe. his eyes, in comparison, are a pale summer's blue, still as bold as the rest of him.

The yowl of encouragement from Firefang is nothing but noise in his ear, Adderpaw skids against the sand yet quickly recovers his footing. Before Harrierpaw can think twice his brother is propelling himself forward with intense speed, forearms open before the Tom leaps. He feels Adderpaw’s weight collide harshly with his own and he thumps onto the ground, air leaving his lungs and his skull ringing at the impact. In his panic he flings a pawful of sand at Adderpaw, hoping to blind him. Once air was restored to his lungs he hisses, ”You cheated!” he accuses sourly, irritated at how easily Adderpaw had gotten him to the ground. Irritated that he already had Harrierpaw bruised. ”That was cheating! If I knew slamming your face into the ground like that was fair game- I would’ve- I would’ve had you eating sand in a heartbeat!”

Hefty paws find their target, lacing themselves around his brother in an unforgiving grip. Within a flash the thrill of the fight causes his maw to split in two to reveal a fanged grin. Harrierpaw's body thumps against the sandy ground and Adderpaw could have sworn he'd seen his brother's limbs fly off the ground, leaving him airborne for a moment before the slam was complete. Excitement thrummed within his body at the discovery of a new move, adrenaline waning now that he'd been declared the victor of their spar. But it ends abruptly as he finds gritty sand flung within one of his amber eyes. "Argh!" The hiss explodes from his maw, causing Adderpaw to backpedal off and away from his fuming littermate. His pelt prickles with hostility as he blinks in a futile effort to clear the obstruction from now watery eyes. "You can't cheat in a spar, Harrierpaw! You're just being a sore loser!" Adderpaw growls, lifting a paw to rub at his eyes although it did nothing to ease the discomfort. He might have been the victor, but he certainly would not forget that turf can be used to one's advantage.

Weaselclaw welcomes Sunstride's approach with a friendly flick of his tail. "You should take him up on it," he tells Firefang with a smile. But it disappears as hisses begin to erupt from the match, and his attention swivels back to the spar.

He's just in time to see Harrierpaw face slam into the ground, and for a furious black paw to scoop sand and fling it into Adderpaw's face. "You cheated!" Weaselclaw exhales softly through his nose, looking at his paler son to see his reaction.

Adderpaw's pelt is fluffed up in anger, and he rubs his sand-filled eyes with a hiss. "You can't cheat in a spar, Harrierpaw! You're just being a sore loser!" At this point, Weaselclaw has seen enough.

"There is no cheating in battle," he tells his sons, rising to his paws and padding closer to them. His tone is serious; he fixes first Harrierpaw and then Adderpaw with a stern blue gaze. "Do you think your RiverClan or ShadowClan opponents will fight fairly? Do you think a rogue would hesitate to smack sand -- or worse -- into your eyes?" He flicks the ear that wears the mark of Smokethroat's fangs, as if to emphasize his point. "You fight for your lives in a real battle. You use any means necessary to win, or to get out alive." A white paw shoots to his throat, feeling the scar there. A phantom pain darkens his expression.
