pafp blinded by the light - patrol

( ) Along with gaining her full name, she had also been appointed an apprentice. The thought of being responsible for teaching a youth of the clan made her nervous, but she was determined to do the best she could. She was still learning the strange ways of her new home herself, but she knew how to hunt and fight, so surely she could teach Jaypaw more about that. Over the past couple days, she had noticed other mentors showing their apprentices around the borders, so this morning she decided to do that as well.

As the dawn neared, Flamewhisker poked her head into the apprentice's den to make sure Jaypaw was awake, then she would wait beside the camp's exit. Once her apprentice joined her, she would set out, leading him towards the direction of Skyclan. They weren't on an official patrol, so she wasn't worried about making it there by a certain time. The dawn patrol was probably already out and about, but she saw no harm in showing the tom around on her own time. She hadn't been assigned to do anything that morning anyways.

Before they arrived at the border, the ginger tabby would glance at her apprentice, offering him a friendly smile. "Can you tell me what you smell?"

Jaypaw is aware of the apprentice system due to his mother's tales but he can't quite wrap his head around anyone teaching him but his mom, Lily. Logic dictates that this should be simple, it's just an older cat instructing a younger cat on how to be a fit warrior. Yet his kittypet origins are nagging in the back of his head, asking, but can you really be a fit warrior? Up until just this last moon, humans provided almost everything for him and Lily everything else. Even though he lost her, there was still his human family probably wondering where their little Alex went. They would forgive him for running off so stupidly, right... The thought has been plaguing him for a short while now, that cowardly itch to return to what he's used to now that he's healthy again. Even though everyone has been so kind.

Ever since Flamewhisker called for him, these thoughts have been swirling in his head. When he approaches the border, Jaypaw stops and stares out into the forest with a quiet disposition. It's... normal to be homesick. He shouldn't be so hard on himself for missing the only thing he knows. But, maybe, it's time to know something new. Maybe he ended up in Thunderclan for a reason and Starclan really was looking out for him. Jay blinks out of his trance as a bird tears away from the canopy and disappears into the far distance. Besides, it's not home anymore- not without mom there.

"Hey Flamewhisker," the new apprentice yawns out and flashes a smile. He stretches then pops back up like a spring, funneling that nervous energy into excitement. This is his first day of training after all, he needs to show Flamewhisker that he's worth her time! His blue eyes flick around almost dizzyingly the whole way toward the Skyclan border, as though he could remember every stump and tree and bush if he looked long enough. He almost looks suprised when the journey ends and his very first apprentice question is presented.

"Oh? Er..." Jaypaw almost blathers out some nonsense but catches himself. The young tom closes his eyes and lifts his nose to the wind, focusing. "It smells like... minty. But stingy. Uhm, well it makes my nose feel funny. It's really strong so it must be... trees?" The name of pine trees alludes him and suddenly the apprentice gets a wiff of something that makes his expression sour. "Ew... Someone really had to go too!" Maybe even more than one cat did. That ammonium scent is unmistakable.
