Jasperglare didn't know shit about Starclan and originally he wasn't interested, but seeing how you could just get exiled one day because they allegedly said so, he figured he should learn more about them.

He didn't trust them, he never trusted anyone completely.

To follow someone blindly was to leave yourself unguarded, open to betrayal.

He was a very critical person.

And so, the scrawny red tom looked for someone to educate him on their dead ancestors. He could choose anyone. The lead warriors, the medicine cats, Sootstar herself.... But no. He would choose one of the ordinary warriors.

And Stormgaze was right in sight!

He padded over to her, his hollow gaze having a little more life in it today than usual.

".......... What can you tell me about Starclan?"

He could have said hello first, but that's what someone with good social skills would do.

"AND I'M NOT YOUR PROTAGONIST"

Stormgaze had grown up believing that there may be something after death. She had always liked to believe there was something more. But it wasn’t till after the great fight and seeing the star cats herself that she truly believed. After seeing such a thing, how could she question their existence? The gray feline saw them as real as the ground she stood on.

Her green hues landed on the approaching tom. There seemed to be a pause before they asked their question. Stormgaze beamed at them. They were asking her? The warrior wasn’t anything special but she knew of Starclan like most of the clan cats that had been around awhile.

“Jasperglare!” the long legged hunter greets right after his question. “Well, where to even start. Starclan is made up of dead cats- duh. Their spirits go up to the stars above. Hence the name- Starclan.” the warrior begins to talk their ear off. Probably giving way more detail than they wanted. She barely pauses between her words but never appears out of breath.

“They watch over us and stuff. They are the reason there are five clans. Before it was a little messy with two big groups and a bunch of loners running around. Now things seem a little more organized. Starclan gives leaders nine whole lives! Gosh- I can’t imagine having so many chances at life. And medicine cats, like Dandelion- Vulturemask, get to talk to Starclan. Or, like, they get visions from them.” Stormgaze pauses a moment to think about if there’s a difference between visions and speaking directly.

StarClan, Sootstar spoke lots of them, some cats would probably say Sootstar spoke too much about them. The blue smoke loved the ancestors and worshipped their words and commands, they had put her on this throne and blessed her with more lives, they saw something in her, how could she not adore them?

Anywhere there was talk of StarClan, somehow she appeared. Stormgaze’s words get a nod of approval from her. ”Yes… more often than not we receive dreams from the moonstone. It’s located in a cave not far from here, its the prettiest sight I’ve ever saw… Just a look at the moonstone will rejuvenate any cats lacking faith.” She‘s purrs.

His love of the stars was ever-present, ever-bright. Hanging high above his head, even when the light was blinding day, and they sat dormant beyond that blue sky. They were the very cause for his curiosity, his salvation. The pull had tugged him oh-so-far, to a world of wonder and whimsy... colors hes never seen before... Never a light quite this brilliant. And it was strange, so sudden. Indescribable, a fondness like no other. A thought so new, so new, and yet, he would sing and dance for all that StarClan was. Endlessly, he would sing their praises, and tonight would be no different, no...

Beyond admirable, their leaders connection to those very few. Blessed be her, they were lucky to live under someone with a gift so great. No cost was too high. He would sing for her, just as well. "Oh, I'd like to see..." A hushed murmur, as if the very stars themselves were listening, and would judge him so for his selfish desires. A stone greater than any edge lodged in dirt. Picturing it, his mind drifts... Moon-lit, soaked divine; horrific, towering height. A greatness that was as terrifying as it was magnificent. Wouldn't he love to see... How lucky was their Vulturemask, chosen by the blessed one herself.

His sigh is dreamy beside Jasperglare, the reverence of something beyond his imagining, and great, in this very way. What he would have given to see them before his own two eyes... But oh, surely, had he been in the hollow that day, he would not have lived quite long enough...

Nine lives sounds like a curse to him, really. Nine lives to suffer and die through. That sounded like torture.

"And they're always watching...?" He said, looking to the sky briefly. A bunch of dead people are watching him right now. He wasn't sure how to feel about that.

He listened to Stormgaze go on about Starclan. These cats had total faith in their dead. It made him.... Not want to die, actually. "To carry all the prayers of the living sounds stressful..." He commented.

"And.... The cats in Starclan... They're from all five clans, right? They don't fight up there? They don't... Send their enemies dreams to mess with them?" He asked. Yeah he was paranoid.

Pretty paranoid. He doesn't know these dead people!!

But he also felt he had to make it clear- he wasn't doubting Starclan.

"I'm not trying to doubt you or...Or Starclan, I just..... Want to understand." He said, glancing to Sootstar.

He had the thought..... To actually visit the moonstone. But would that be sacrilegious? Would he be allowed?

"YOU'RE NOT A PART TIME GOD"
The grey monolith that was Houndthistle, standing guard upon the entrance of camp, peered curiously from where he sat, orange eyes vacant of any critical thought or wistful wisdom of the stars like the others. As dense as the beast he was named after, the large tom never had much reason to question the stars, the universe, or death. In fact, so much of his life was spent avoiding meeting the jaws of that wolf that he never dared question the entire vastness and religious significance, even after he came to Windclan as they spouted off every ten seconds about some sort of holy group of dead cats in the stars. And, sure, perhaps a more curious mind, a more hungry soul for explanation, would explore those questions, but Houndthistle knew only the things he was raised with, and that was that there are always bigger fish then you that will eat you and that you have to do everything in your power to not be swept up by them.

"Point is, folk believe, usually, that something guides them and ensures their safety, yeah? Afterall, not like one of us will have a chance to speak with those-er, Starclan cats," He expressed, accented voice coming gravelly from his thick chest as his half-tail thudded beside him, "You've gotten this far without questionin' the intentions of them up there, right? Yer alive, kickin' and breathin', so obviously they want ya around or somethin', right?" Talking like this, having these conversations, made his head hurt and it was clear this took alot of thinking power that he usually didn't use or necessarily have even, "It's like... askin' a favor of ya ma when yer a kit or somethin'. You send a lil prayer up, askin' for safety or prosperity or whatever, and in exchange you keep on... keepin' on."

Truly if he were being honest with himself he didn't have much reverence for the stars. But just like with most things they had their place among their lives. It is beneficial to enjoy the notion of those dead cats watching over them. It gives a sense of bewilderment, safety. Sometimes he wonders that if he died would he be a welcomed sight there. Chuckling to himself on the thought his frigid gaze locks on the group of cats as Jasper asks his questions and like a ghost he slips his way among them. His nose twitches as he listens to what Sootstar says and he becomes curious. The Moonstone. He has heard tales of it and the splenor that it shines. A part of him wants to see it. To stare at it. But alas he does not think it to be his place. Or maybe... Slowly he focuses back and his small grin remains slightly upon his maw. His toes flex a little as he looks at Jasper.

"From the stories they are made up of the five clans. After they killed each other of course! A big fight they had down here but they settled it obviously." Who doesn't know the tale of the Great Battle after all and how things transpired. It is a riveting tale full of intrigue. He likes it. Still he can understand any cats hesitance about the concept of Starclan. But he does believe in them. They thrive and give their wisdom to those worthy enough.

"AND I'M NOT YOUR PROTAGONIST"

The lanky warrior nodded along as more came into the conversation. Starclan was a cool thing. Even if it didn’t really affect her day to day. She was sure it affected the leader and medicine cat all the time though. Still, she believed. The dead were watching after them and one day she would join them.

“I don’t think they fight each other?” she said, but wasn’t sure about her answer. “I’m honestly not sure what they are doing when they aren’t sending us messages. But I like to think they are getting some good rest.” Since she wanted to be able to rest when she was dead. But maybe there was no such thing as resting forever.

Stormgaze shook her head side to side, “No worries! Asking questions is completely natural. I don’t think Starclan would mind.”
