A kindly figure on the fringes of ShadowClan, Velvetdusk is alone among a lonely people. His solitude is self-sustaining; haunted by memories of his upbringing and with his father's image casting a long shadow, he fears the love of his Clanmates. Still, a childhood spent as a soldier in a distant colony ravaged by war has done nothing to temper his unabashed love for others and his moral compass's natural pull towards true good.
Velvetdusk is a small, sweet-faced cat with a feathery black, cinnamon, and white pelt and dark, imploring brown eyes. His left ear is gone nearly to the base, and he has claw scars over his left eye and high on his right temple.
Velvetdusk is a warrior of ShadowClan under Ternstar's leadership. He was born Vincent to a church cat named Isabela, then given over to his father Sickle, the tyrant king of a war-torn colony, at just one moon old. Under his father and brother's tutelage, Vincent became a formidable fighter, but was left with lasting scars, both physical and mental, from his time as a child soldier. Following his brother's death in battle and his father's slackening grip over the colony, his mother stole him away in the night. After Isabela's death from sickness during their long journey, he joined ShadowClan under Chilledstar's leadership.
Named Velvetpaw for his new life and gentle nature, he grew to be a loyal and devout warrior under the tutelage of a senior warrior named Doveswoop. He has been and continues to be a kind but distant presence in the Clan, even after being named Velvetdusk for his quiet nature. Lately, Velvetdusk has been hesitantly reaching out to his Clanmates, though what future lies ahead for him remains uncertain.

A little too sharp to be cute, a little too kind to be intimidating, Velvetdusk cuts a distinct figure even among ShadowClan's strange ranks. Standing at slightly below average height, his body is slight and slender, sometimes verging on uncannily thin in the coldest months. He has a wiry strength that can be felt despite the comparative thinness of his limbs, and suggestions of competence linger in the dense, rangy muscle of his shoulders and forelegs. A thickly feathery coat disguises some of the lines of his body, set off by a flourishing white quill of a tail. The immediate impression one gets of him is tired but benevolent; he has strange features but a fine, handsome face, though it is difficult to put an age to him.
He wears a long face that usually appears happy yet utterly exhausted. There's a certain delicate quality to his features, which are finely wrought yet expressive, that would push him towards fragility if not for his visible scars. Four distinct clawmarks rake down his left eye, though he blessedly retains his sight, and there's a grooved scar high on his right temple. Similarly, his red left ear is gone nearly to the base, leaving a high-set and tufted black right one. He has dark brown eyes that are as wide as a deer's and equally imploring; they hold a certain sadness in their depths.
His pelt is a patchwork of tricolor hues, cinnamon tabby and black tabby bisected along clean lines by a creamy white. A dark, blue-toned hue colors the right side of his face, broken up by panels of tabby markings akin to stained glass. On his head, cinnamon only appears in his cropped left ear and as two delicate curves under his right eye. His body, meanwhile, is for the most part white, much like the left side of his face. Only his right foreleg wears the same watery black tabby markings, with a cape of cinnamon draping across both shoulders like a cardinal's vestments. Dual stripes of blue-black frame a dark star on his chest, and dainty freckles of white spatter his shoulders and mark the bridge of his nose.

Scars gained:
- Given four raking clawmarks over his left eye in battle during one of his birth colony's wars.
- Lost most of his left ear during a midnight raid on his home during one of his birth colony's wars.
- Given a deep scar high on his right temple during a rockslide while fleeing attackers in his youth.
Standing tall and weary, Velvetdusk often appears tired through the very lines of his body. Though he has a noble carriage and stands straight, without much posturing or hunching, something about the way he moves seems to communicate an utter exhaustion. He moves slowly and thoughtfully, usually with intention—he does not often fidget and everything about the way he moves seems purposeful.
His resting expression is a small, solemn smile or a look of contemplation. He has deeply expressive features and he makes full use of them; often, his face and body say what his mouth might not. Often, he may appear to be muttering to himself; typically, this means he is whispering a prayer of some kind to StarClan or murmuring oaths under his breath. He may appear stricken or otherwise emotional without an obvious cause; usually, this is owed to some thought or memory causing him internal consternation.
In large groups of cats and in especially enclosed or open spaces—essentially, anywhere that appears vulnerable—he often seems alert and uncommonly nervous. Velvetdusk often makes an effort to subtly assess the spaces he occupies for quick exits, and has a tactical way of viewing situations that frequently intrudes on his otherwise peaceful nature.
When he speaks to others, he will appear entirely consumed by their conversation, his focus rarely veering from his companion. He often appears to contemplate his words for a long time before speaking, which may lead to slightly uncomfortable silences for his Clanmates while he mulls over his words. It's rare that he speaks without thinking it over first, and he tends to refrain from speaking unless it concerns practical matters or he feels a deep compulsion to lend his voice.

Velvetdusk is pansexual and monogamous. Velvetdusk has pointedly avoided the romantic dalliances of others throughout his youth, and has a deep-seated fear of falling in love—or worse, doing something to earn another's. His parents had a on-and-off relationship that was difficult at best, and their mateship was deeply fragmented by Sickle's tyranny and the war ravaging their home colony. Though he has begun to tentatively reach out to his peers and Clanmates, and presents a companionable kindness to any who might seek his company or counsel, the notion of love terrifies him.
- Velvetdusk makes friends easily—though he often must be sought out, his every action usually oozes genuine care and sweetness, though distant, towards his Clanmates. It is easy to become a casual friend of his, but difficult to connect with him on a deeper level.
- Velvetdusk trusts easily; his positive attitude and belief in the goodness of all bolsters his threshold for trust. Even the cruelest cats will struggle to pull any genuine rancor out of him, though once betrayed, he may turn a cold shoulder.
- Velvetdusk makes enemies with considerable difficulty. It takes a lot to cross a point of no return when it comes to his kindness, and he rarely holds grudges. However, when the occasion calls for it or he feels compelled to speak, he is not above a little verbal repartee.

Skills
- Excels in combat. Raised as a child soldier and then formally trained, Velvetdusk is agile and adept in making use of his teeth and claws, though obviously hesitant to do so unless his paw is forced. Once engaged, he fights ruthlessly and dirtily, though he retains a strong understanding of the finer points of strategy. As such, he is a much better combatant than he would appear at first glance.
- Excels in diplomacy and empathy. One of Velvetdusk's greatest skills is his ability to filter the world through the perspective of others, and his innate kindness lends itself to easy understanding and a proficiency in diplomacy.
- Excels in stealth. Having spent quite a few nights in his kithood fleeing or hiding from raiding opponents, Velvetdusk has experience with and appreciation for the merits of stealth. He considers himself above nothing and will resort to dunking his white pelt in mud when the occasion calls for it.
- Proficient in tracking. His kithood training ran the gamut of combat skills, among them the repertoire of senses required to adequately track a fleeing enemy. Velvetdusk is skillful in following the trails of cats, though less so when it comes to tracking prey.
- Mediocre in hunting. Velvetdusk possesses a baseline competency when it comes to catching prey, but he lacks some of the crucial underpinnings that make a great hunter.
- Poor in leadership. Velvetdusk is the quiet type and will not automatically assume control of a situation, even when it's obviously necessary. A scenario must be truly foundering before he even thinks of stepping up.
- Poor in weaving. Surprisingly, the fine dexterity required for weaving seems to escape him. Velvetdusk's own nest is often in a sorry state, and he consistently fumbles when called upon to handle den repairs.
- Poor in swimming. Velvetdusk has never had to swim and would doubtlessly drown without assistance should he be made to.
- Poor in climbing. Velvetdusk has never been required to climb and is generally ill-suited to the task.
Combat difficulty is hard. Though it takes a direct command or a strenuous effort to provoke Velvetdusk into open combat, once done, he will make a formidable opponent. He was a child soldier in a war-torn colony, and so the foundations of his combat style favor ruthlessness and dirty fighting without consideration for mercy. His Clan training honed his rougher edges and left him with a profound understanding of strategy and combat theory, combining to form him into a serious combatant.
The battlefield is perhaps the single place Velvetdusk leaves little room for mercy, hence his conservative approach to entering it. He makes use of his opponent's limitations (ex. an injury or a weakness) and of the environment around him. Given his slight frame, he fights with an agile and fluid style that retains a generous amount of ruthlessness. Velvetdusk favors strikes at the face and eyes, stomach and throat, and the valuable muscles of the legs. He usually fights to kill, but will often show mercy at the last second.
Velvetdusk typically will not start fights. Velvetdusk will rarely flee, unless he feels a battle is truly hopeless. Velvetdusk will show mercy. Though his fighting style favors maiming and killing, more often than not, Velvetdusk's principles will lead him to show mercy at the last moment. -
