CLOUDS LOOK LIKE MOUNTAINS \ duskbird

The sunlight was sorely missed, but sometimes slips of it leaked in through the doorway. He saw the light, kindling and ash- a nephew who sought him out every so often, who he'd shared many a quiet moment with. Mossy eyes shone with gladness as he saw him- whatever the reason for his visit, Berryheart was pleased to see him. A white-toed paw motioned to an empty nest, freshly made for an inevitable future patient... or, a conversational partner.

A cough, muffled behind fastened jaws, rattled behind his teeth. "I can't keep you here long," he murmured a slight twist of regret in his voice. How he would love to laze away in conversation, but contagion still tacked his tongue. There was no telling what harm he could do to those he loved if he let his self control falter. He hoped, though, that it was clear why. And it would not be long until he saw them all again and could spend as much time as he liked with them, depite the thread of connection he felt with StarClan still. He knew, at the very least, this illness would not be the death of him.

↟↟ᨒ"You won't be keeping me." He sets the squirrel down and speaks with quiet conviction, nudging it closer to his uncle and confidant in a moment of bated breath. "I'm here because I want to be." Better to pretend that is all there is to it. That he is here for a conversation, without a lump in his throat, to talk as he used to about nothing at all. To lounge upside down in a stolen nest and wonder about the feeling of uncertainty in his gut whenever he heard his own voice. Simpler times, then. Easier to manage. (He would do anything to go back, and not just for his own sake. The withering tom before him makes something in the warrior flare up. Anxiety. Thoughts of yellowcough, of withering away in that dreary medicine den and listening to another family say goodbye.)

He won't say goodbye. Berryheart is on the mend. Slowly, but surely. So Duskbird settles into the nest without worry about his illness, or what might catch the visitor in turn. "You're feeling better, aren't you?"

Kindles' words were reassuring, as ever- spoken from the maw of someone who felt safe in this den even when the air was thick with illness. Of course, he was grateful for the company, grateful to provide safety and comfort. It was his duty as a healer to do that, of course- just as it was his duty as an uncle. It took him a moment to ready himself to take a bite from the squirrel- his appetite was slowly returning, but still was not back to its former glory. Still, he blinked his gratitude to his nephew.

Kindles' question refused to lay flat on Berryheart's back. He would not lie- and to say it, to say "Yes," it was not a lie. StarClan wtched closely, and the catmint was not working as swiftly as it was supposed to- but he was improving. The coughs lessened by the day. The drowsiness was ou of love, rather than necessity. It was only his breaths, still short and stunted, that refused to regain. "Please, don't worry." An assurance. Flat honesty, as ever. "I would much rather you enjoy your warriorhood, than worry for me." And a warrior- it was bewildering that his sister's child already bore that title. Already to him, but.. perhaps to some, some, it had been long enough.
