camp DAFT AND DIM // journey game [kits only]

// kits only please! Just a little game, tagging @CRABKIT because he was mentioned but not pafp!

"We're gonna play journey!" Cragkit announces as soon as he scampers into the group of denmates, his tail sticking straight up in the air. Ever since he heard the very first story from his mother, he's been obsessed with the heroics of the cats that traveled to the mountains to save the clans. He hopes one day he can do something like that...he'd be a hero, and everyone would remember his name. Aspirations have morphed into a need for imagination, a need to live out the adrenaline that he is sure his mother and uncle faced.

He bounds over to a nearby puddle and plants himself on the other side. "Crabkit and I are the RIverClanners! The rest of you have to cross the bridge we're holding!" He instructs matter-of-factly, but there's an excitement in his tone as he waits for his denmates to hurry up and come. Biting a stick, he places it across the puddle and holds it there, beckoning his brother to join him. "Oh!" He chirps, jerking his head up. "And one of you has to fall in so we can save you! Okay, go!"

𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 Ever since he and his littermates were told about the journey that their mother and uncle had gone on to save the entire clan, Cragkit has seemed intent on being brave and heroic. The monochrome kit announces that they’re playing journey, and assigns himself and Crabkit as the RiverClanners. They’re gonna help the other kits cross a puddle—Crabkit splashes a saffron paw into the water, a bright grin spreading across his face. The bridge is portrayed by a stick across the puddle, but Crabkit is sure that the cats on the journey all had a much larger bridge.

He wonders how big the warriors RiverClan had to save from the water were, too… was it hard to save them? Crabkit is a good swimmer, but he doesn’t think he could carry a whole cat through the water! And he can’t even catch a minnow, so how would he manage to fish them out if someone fell in? But this isn’t real life, it’s make-believe, so Crabkit can be as strong as he wants! "Don’t worry, we’ll keep you safe!" He announces cheerily, his orange-capped paws shifting impatiently against the ground. He can’t wait for them to start crossing the puddle—he can’t wait to actually save somebody!

Twinklekit is hardly disgruntled at the assignment of being a non-RiverClan cat for the game. It feels a little… wrong to pretend to be from a different clan but she could compromise.

She pictures herself as a brawny and tall ThunderClanner, though instead of imagining her character to be heroic and good-natured she falls into a hole of negative stereotypes. Thick-skulled, nosy, and annoying. It made sense to her that a minnow-brained ThunderClan cat would be the one to plummet into the river so she willingly plays the requested role.

Stepping into the small puddle she pretends to drown by flailing her limbs, her paws drumming at the water. ”Help me! I’m drowning!” She wails convincingly enough for an acting kit, though she can’t help but giggle at the same time. This was a little silly, but she was having fun.

✧ . Why did Cragkit and Crabkit get to play the cool part of their game? Streamkit would rather be a RiverClanner too, would rather be the one saving drowning warriors than be the one drowning. But, it’s a game, one that he gets to be included in, so he’ll play along, even if being on the duo’s team sounds like more fun.

They’re some sort of lousy outer-clan cat, maybe a SkyClanner, or a ShadowClanner. Something akin to his parents’ pasts in Marsh and Pine, though probably the former — his mother thinks of him as a cloud, anyway. It doesn’t matter what he is though, just that he can’t swim.

At first, he doesn’t share the puddle with Twinklekit, who’s already doing a convincing job of needing saving. Instead, wobbling paws balance carefully upon their makeshift bridge, but as soon as his stability falters, as soon as a paw lands in the water, he deems himself as drowning too. Splashing and wailing, Streamkit follows Twinklekit’s lead with a scrunched up face, a chaotic flailing of paws sending water and mud everywhere that makes the game much more fun, in their eyes. “ Help! I can’t swim! “

The true meaning and purpose behind the journey that took place way before Eveningkit was born fly over her head easily. She knows it's important because Hazecloud took part too, venturing deep into places she doubts she'll ever get the chance to see for herself, helping the Clans in... whichever way it mattered. She's way too impatient to ever listen to a full story about it. It will do for this little game of theirs though.

Much to nobody's surprise, Eveningkit isn't pleased by the notion of being anything but a RiverClanner. It goes against everything! How could she pretend to be anything else? There's little she knows about the other Clans, but it'll have to do... she doesn't want to be from the moors because she's seen how her Clanmates look when they talk about those cats over that way. The marshland doesn't sound too appealing either, but at least she can imagine she is intimidating as she emerges from the shadows.

Perfect.

"Okay, I'll be Eveningstar from ShadowClan!" she announces with her face thrown skyward, as if waiting for StarClan to really bless her. "Don't let my fur get wet, or else."

She waits for Cragkit and Crabkit to place their twigs, and already Twinklekit and Streamkit are on their way. Eveningkit waits with her tail waving behind her like some sort of frenzied snake. They both fall and splash desperately in the deep, deep puddle, funnily enough that Eveningkit cannot contain her giggles.

Then, she sees an opportunity. "Oh, I have something way better than a branch here." Self-assured paws ghost over Streamkit's fur before pressing down, first lightly, and then her weight is put on the kitten underneath her fully- with how much she's squirming around, it's inevitable that Eveningkit loses her balance and falls right into the water herself. "Oh no!"

As Crabkit joins him, the tricolored tom can’t contain his excited giggles as the game begins. His small tail lashes to and fro eagerly as he watches the other kits begin to cross the ‘bridge,’ and its Twinklekit that first takes a plunge. She plays the role perfectly, splashing and wailing for help. Streamkit is right behind her, flinging mud with his paws and getting them all soaked. Cragkit is giggling wildly, releasing his hold on his stick as he watches them, and finally bursts out laughing when Eveningkit - no, Eveningstar - tries to walk right on top of Streamkit before falling in, too. “Oh no!” He tries to sputter out through his laughs. “Crabkit, we have to- we have to help them!” More laughs. “I’ll get Twinklekit first! You get Streamkit and Eveningkit!”

He crouches and wiggles his rump dramatically before leaping high into the air to come splashing down in the puddle - his version of a big dive. “I’ll save you, ThunderClanner!” He declares heroically (fortunately guessing her pretend clan correctly thanks to his mother’s stories!), grabbing her scruff in his jaws and beginning to pull towards the ‘shore.’ Hopefully, she helps a bit…he doesn’t know if he’s strong enough to drag her all the way there.

𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 None of the other kits complain about their appointed roles, thankfully, and Crabkit tries his best to help hold the stick in place while they begin to cross over it. Twinklekit adopts a stance that shows she isn’t a RiverClanner, but as she crosses over the puddle, she slips and falls right into it. Silly, clumsy ThunderClanner! First she falls, and then Streamkit follows right after. They're both really good at pretending to be cats from other clans… they don’t even know how to swim! Crabkit giggles along with the other kits, watching as Streamkit’s flailing sends droplets of mud flying all over the place. But his wild movements don’t stop Eveningkit—now Eveningstar of ShadowClan—from trying to step on the blue and white tomkit.

Now all three of the other kits are gonna drown… green eyes widen with faux horror. "Oh no!" The orange-and-ivory kit echoes his brother’s cry of dismay, watching all three of the other kits splash into the water one by one. All three of them! How can he and his brother save them all? Cragkit answers the question rather quickly—by announcing that he’ll rescue Twinklekit, and leaving the other two kits for Crabkit to save. How is he supposed to do that? He doesn’t know how, exactly, he’s going to pull another kit out of the puddle. But his littermate demonstrates how to do it first, by grabbing Twinklekit by her scruff and beginning to drag her out of the deep, dangerous water.

The little orange tom leaps into the puddle with a mighty splash, but Streamkit is still struggling, and mud flies everywhere. "Hey! You’re getting me all muddy, stop it! I’m trying to save you!" He whines, knowing that his mama is going to be so unhappy with him. She’s probably gonna make him take a big bath before she lets him go back in the nursery! With a little huff of effort, Crabkit attempts to take Streamkit by the scruff of his neck as well and tries to pull him gradually out of the puddle. "Hang on, Eveningstar!" He calls out to the she-kit, then goes back to focusing solely on his first task.
