DARK AS A LAKE ✦ rowanpaw

Rain falls softly against the silver sand of the hollow as the clan winds down for the night. Many Windclanners retreat into the few shallow dens around the camp to escape the drizzle. But Midnightpaw isn't ready to turn in just yet, and she realizes that she doesn't mind the rain so much. The large droplets feel cool against her skin, and remind her that even bad days can be washed away. She settles quietly in a deserted corner of the clearing after saying goodnight to her siblings, tail curling around her delicate paws. Cornflower blue eyes quickly fall to a small yellow flower just a hare-length away, a lingering greenleaf bloom not quite ready to give in to the changing seasons.

She watches with undue rapture as a crystalline raindrop splashes onto one of the small xanthic petals, reflecting the moonlight for a heartbeat before melting away. Midnightpaw doesn't like water when it comes in the form of rivers or lakes, when it's untamable and risky, but she finds that she likes it this way. Ebony-striped ears swivel at the sound of a clanmate approaching, but she doesn't turn to see who it is. Instead she leans in closer to the flower, ignoring her now-fully soaked fur, waiting for another drop to land. Her underdeveloped lungs struggle in the damp air, her breaths growing raspy, but she doesn't mind. "Isn't it pretty?" she exhales softly to her unknown companion, her oceanic gaze wide as the moon above them.

Rowanpaw despised rain. Their pelt was thinner than those bestowed with thick locks of fur, meaning that water droplets penetrated their coat more easily. It was difficult enough to maintain their appearance with a job that required nosing through soil all day, so the rain was really something that they did not like worrying about. However, bad weather was unavoidable when a trip to the dirtplace was necessary.

The chimera was not thrilled about trekking in and out of the hollow in a time like this, but they had tried to make their time brief. A displeased expression etches across Rowanpaw's typically neutral features as they descend into camp. They flatten their ears to avoid catching any falling droplets in them, lithe form slinking toward the shelters though stopping in their tracks as Midnightpaw makes a comment. Was she talking about the rain? "It's cold and wet." Rowanpaw replies rather flatly, though they are more irritated with the circumstances in general than with Midnightpaw herself.

The tunneler apprentice shakes out their pelt as more water pitter-patters against it. Rowanpaw cannot stand much more of this. "Come inside, won't you? Wolfsong doesn't have all of the herbs in the world to spare." They meow, noting Midnightpaw's soaked pelt with a small wince. How could the she-cat even stand sitting out in this weather?
