DIES IRAE ˎˊ- HUNTING ENCOUNTER

-ˋˏ ༻✧༺ ˎˊ- despite it not being her favorite thing in the world, carawaysong hunted land prey with an impressive efficiency. a gift passed from nightfish, no doubt, and now she had the opportunity to spread such knowledge to an apprentice of her very own. she had told rivuletpaw how to stalk through the territory, and now it was her chance to show.

and show she did. after a thorough search, carawaysong caught wind of a rabbit more than likely taking a journey away from the moors. it should have stayed there if it did not want to become someone's meal. the warrior caught it off guard, propelled herself forward on long legs and ran it to a dead end where she swiftly promised another catch to riverclan. an good one too, something of this size would feed a good pawful of clanmates if they were conservative with their appetites.

her time admiring the catch beneath her paws was brutally cut short, something barreled into her hard enough to send the warrior flat onto her flank. with wide eyes, she scrambled to try and catch her breath. it wasn't until she heard cheerful yipping that she understood what had happened. "dog!" she chokes out through a stuttered breath, another thought in her mind was just as swift. "run, rivuletpaw!"

carawaysong couldn't see the pale furred apprentice, only the hound that threatened to steal her glory. as long as its attention remain towards her, it couldn't hurt little rivuletpaw. "hey, ugly! that's mine," the tabby hisses, creating a dramatic display in attempt to draw its gaze. it didn't pay her much mind until her claws made contact, scoring its shoulder as the beast turned towards her with now empty jaws, her rabbit discarded limply against the frosted grass. its teeth gnashed, pulling the fur along her hammering chest. spine to the ground a yowl clambered from her throat, hind legs moving desperately to try and dislodge the predator.

"Stay low, yeah?" Rivuletpaw had replied during their lesson, recounting the different points that Carawaysong had gifted her. She didn't think and hunting would be a part of her necessary repetoire, but as they traveled the territory and she learned more of its hills and valleys, the apprentice took note of how much more land they had than water. No doubt, even if it wasn't a skill they used often with the river being so plentiful, it was a good one to hold to. Especially when leafbare decides to arrive early.

She hangs back, watching as her mentor chases the hide off of a prey-creature (a rabbit, she would soon recognize.) A proud "Whoop!" rips from her lungs - only for it to be punctuated by big floppy paws and Carawaysong sliding across the slick, frosted ground. A.... A...

"Run, Rivuletpaw!"

She sees reddish auburns and coal black hurling for a dog. She sees smoke striked silver fur taunting it away. She sees whats before her and what her memory had tried to lock away. She cannot discern the two so quickly.

Stunned, she does not realize a mouse that had rushed passed her, mere clawlengths away from her own paws. A catch scented only after its gone. Green eyes are pinpointed on the discarded rabbit and then her mentor, pinned beneath slobbery jaws and too-large paws. Rivuletpaw trembles, a pawstep taken back at first. Run! She should listen to the demand, but... "Carawaysong!"

She would not call it bravery. She would call it selfishness, to not want to see another bound to the medicine den for bones broken in her honor.

She snakes forward, stumbling over her legs while shouting into the wetlands, "Help! Help us!" A patrol - she needs any one of them to gather forth and help them scare off this mutt. Until then she barrels towards it, sinking her teeth into its taut skin and flesh. She's shaken loose once, her body crashing against the ground, but the apprentice stands again and nips at the dog's ankles. It releases Carawaysong and whirls onto her, and the apprentice... freezes, staring down into the soulless eyes of the beast that had hurt her. (Not the same one. It's not the same one. It's different.)

Her claws raise and she slashes across its nose, but the dog advances regardless.

[ girl save her she needs it + rolled a 12, so found prey and lost it ]

Valesight had little use to be out here trying to hunt... The smoke had scared most of the land-prey out of the forest and birds were equally eager to flee the heavy air. Fishing... fishing felt like pulling burrs from his fur but he'd do it if he had to. He'd do it if he had no other choice...

It seemed both his patrol-mates had the good fortune to find prey that scurries rather than swims. Carawaysong rushes after a rabbit and Rivuletpaw all but lets a mouse slip right through her paws- he thinks to say something to the young apprentice. A question of her attention maybe? Or an encouragement that one missed piece was okay, she was young!

But then the other warrior shrieks a warning and he is reminded of his own apprenticeship... of the way his body froze up with only a half-hearted smack to a dampened canine nose. His shoulder aches sympathetically to his memory, watching the scene repeat itself like he is that young apprentice again, swiping weakly at something he cannot fight. "She said run," he barks, lifting his paws to smack at the dog's muzzle in an effort to distract it from its tinier prey.

He can at least say he's had practice this time... and takes solace in the way fury-hungry eyes snap to him instead. No kittens for dinner for this beast... The fur along his spine stands on end in threat, lips drawn back in an ugly snarl, "Go now." Because what good was a kid who'd just been made an apprentice not even a week ago?
