The question of why has been lingering since Chilledstar's last meeting had come to a disappointing close. A warrior ceremony forgotten, it's been gnawing at Eeriepaw's mind with every moment that passed.
Why is he still an apprentice? What has he done wrong to still hold an apprentice's name? He'd done everything Spectermask had taught him - has never missed a lesson, a patrol. He knows how to hunt, has seen the frontlines of battle.
So why?
It frustrates him, not knowing. And yet, he is avoidant of his mentor, of Chilledstar - of anyone who could give him an answer to his delay. Part of him fears the answer, the confrontation in a losing battle. He cannot make the choice to become a warrior. Spectermask and Chilledstar must do that
for him.
But, if he's not ready, he should have been informed. Should've been told what he needs to do - how he can get back on track so he can become a warrior. He should know why.
Finally, he makes a decision. With the mission of proving himself, Eeriepaw sneaks out of camp at dawn. Maybe if he could catch something, anything, Spectermask could see that he's ready.
He hopes it's enough as he returns to camp. A frog between his teeth, the lanky tom moves through his home, dark eyes scanning for the snow-masked face of his mentor. When he finally finds him, he approaches. Eeriepaw greets him by dropping the frog at Spectermask's paws.
"I want to know why," he asserts, tail lashing behind him.
