DORITOS & FRITOS ☀︎ HUNTING THUNDERCLANNERS

74050413_jPt0SpfsFU54Qvq.png
the tortoiseshell leads a hunting patrol today. it’s something she’s slowly accustoming to, better with the two she’d chosen to accompany her. wolfwind and moonwhisper, two mollies least likely to need interfering with on their expedition. while emberpaw did trail at the back, she was dutiful at the heel of freckleflame’s own former mentor. she leads despite the way her gait longs to do near the same : to falter to her side, ease the steady tremble of nerves that had come to grace their border with windclan. she leads because that’s what a warrior did, and.. to tell the entire truth, moonwhisper’s presence sobered her enough to keep her face as straight as possible. leafbare neared with each day, the leaves beneath her paws crunching crisper, dusting beneath the step of her paw ; soon would be a day that she went to bed with an empty, turning stomach, rationing the frail corpses to those who need it most. she, young and old as she was at the same time, was far enough down that list that each patrol mattered desperately. despite the brimming of trouble over the horizon, the leafy plains aside the owl tree was good for uncovering rodents looking to burrow in for the season.

she is sniffing a patch when movement blurs the outskirts of her vision.

she watches it, long limbs hurdling towards the safety of the leaves scattered precariously about the border separating her patrol and windclan. she watches as it whips it’s way closer, closer. and.. it was going to cross the border. it seemed frantic, ears back, wind - whipped. all in seconds does she lift and wave her tail frantically to direct the attention of her patrol, beginning to pick up her pace as the blur nears. her paws are not made for running rabbits, but they are for silence — a rapid creep in the leaves that keeps those thumping paws treading hot their way. she sinks low, crawls nearly on her belly to blend ginger - black fur into the leaffall undergrowth. beady eyes spot her too late, spots her patrol members wrangling it in along its other side until too late. freckleflame launches off hind legs the moment it begins to skitter a confused circle and her teeth clean sink into short, soft fur, blood welling familiarly around the canines of her teeth where her jaws had clamped. but it still kicks. a feisty thing, her eyes widen and she latched in an unsheathed paw onto its flank. it’s a bigger piece than she’s used to, a wrassle she’d only experienced briefly before in training, hare an uncommon treat if not for the occasional sprint from windclan.

it was like wrapping around a pheasant, sinking her teeth further and further until — snap. violently kicking legs slow to a jerking twitch, the leaves scattered where it’s desperate hind claws had raked the ground clear. she stays there, close to the ground, jaw locked and nose flaring with effort until she feels the thing’s wiry muscles begin to loosen. when she unlatched her teeth, it is with a smile brighter than the sun, visceral red oozing thick around muzzle, “ ha HA, look’it that! “ she crows towards wolfwind, towards moonwhisper, slaps a paw against the unmoving hare’s side with a now sheathed paw. it stares towards the sky, unseeing, and the tortoiseshell warrior dances around its body in hopping circles on the very tips of her toes. that’d fill a couple of bellies, at least! with it getting so cold, they weren’t bringing home a squirrel or vole, no mice. a hare, ” emberpaw, is your big sister the amaaaazingest or what? “ she sighs loudly, striking an exaggerated pose with a quick outward jut of her cream - kissed forelimb. from this angle, it’s obvious how her chest heaves beneath the mane of russet and black, flanks pulsing to catch her breath. whew. she deflates slightly, totally not to catch her breath.

” damn thing was in a hurry, though.. “

Truth be told if anyone else had asked her to go hunting she would've refused, but she liked Freckleflame well enough and her cousin was also somewhat more tolerable than most cats. This was not a group she had issue with, so she agreed. It spared her having to arrange her own hunting patrol, once again dismissing Flycatcher's orders to do as she pleased. She had no respect for him any further, she'd not follow him dutifully when he became leader either.
ThunderClan needed a more assertive cat at the helm, one befitting her grandmother's legacy.

It happens so quickly she does not have time to process it before a tangle of black and orange fur goes rolling, the shriek of a rabbit fills the air and then nothing. Freckleflame presents her catch to them as she steps forward to finally arrive, cold blue eyes scanning the fallen hare and then the speckled molly who she considered the only one of Sunfreckle's brood worth getting to know. "Good catch." Moonwhisper says quietly, her tone curt and polite but impressed nonetheless and it was the most of a compliment she often gave. The remark on the prey's eagerness to move has her ears flattening in wariness and she turns to the border it had come dashing across with a skeptical stare, "Well, it came from that direction. Perhaps someone lost their catch then. Oh well, their own fault and our well-earned prize." WindClan were meant to be swift and agile, that they lost a hare before it hit the border was no fault of ThunderClans and they would simply need to get over it.
But she recalls what she heard of highstones and bristles, would they be so foolhardy as to attempt to reclaim it? Were they so abrasive they no longer cared for borders and would simply take what they wished? If they felt such a way she'd put down whichever one made an attempt at it before her.
ThunderClan would be going home with this rabbit.

( ) Hares aren't what Hollowcreek considered the easiest prey to catch- not for a cat of his stature. His frame was rather out of place for a WindClanner at all and there are times he wondered if it weren't for his friendship with their silvery queen if he would have found himself fit along the moors at all. But like any other environment he's in he learned to adapt. To learn and seek resolution where the obvious answers did not lie. As a moor-runner he had more freedom to lurk and stalk along the tall grasses. His fur could blend into the wheat covered fields with ease, it was merely his dexterity and speed that he couldn't obtain.

Tunnelers were his main partner in crime for hunting. He was good at herding creatures toward the tunnels into the waiting claws of his Clanmates. Today had given him no such luck in success though as the rabbit tore off in another direction right before the tunneler could grab it. Hollowcreek grumbled his frustration as he bounded after it but to no avail- it was heading toward ThunderClans border. Too far out of reach to catch up and save their attempt at the last minute.

As he neared the border his sides would heave with heavy breaths, looking at Freckleflame with an unreadable stare. Equal amounts of disappointment and surprise stirred and, if it weren't for the fact it had been his failed catch, he would have congratulated her.

"Guess it wanted to be eaten by ThunderClan instead." Came his only comment.
( I SEE YOUR COLLARBONE ; AND WANNA LOSE CONTROL )

Paws pound against the earth, wind whipping through her fur and tears in her eyes from the icy sting of it. Isn't this what life was for though? The thrill of the chase, the feeling that is so close to flying she can almost taste it as she nears her quarry. Last second, however, the damned thing turns, it makes a beeline for ThunderClan's territory and no doubt the safety of the foliage there, the unknown safety of an invisible line she is unable to cross. "Hare-dung!" she spits in exclamation as she skids and quickly scrambles in the dust to right herself. Soon enough she is back on course, the rabbit had gained quite a bit of ground but she was fast and she is confident she can catch up before it makes it to ThunderClan.

Fate would not have it that way though. She watches in horror as it crosses the line, as it runs straight into the paws of none other than a certain dappled she cat. She narrows golden eyes ever so slightly, ears flicking as she listens to Peonypaw congratulate them of all things. Did he have a chicken's brain resting in that thick skull? Hollowcreek too, she had expected more from him at least.

"So, we meet again Dapplefire" she says, acting almost nonchalant as she trots up to the border, shooting the two other WindClanners present a frigid glare and pretending as if she has forgotten the opposing mollies name. "In case you hadn't noticed, that hare belongs to WindClan and well, I can't let you take it. Sorry but, you'll have to give it back. It was a nice catch though, thank you for saving it for me." her voice makes it sound like it would be the easiest thing in the world, to just pass the rabbit back along the border, but there is a certain icy undercurrent to her tone that suggests that this is not an optional choice. Either they gave it back or she would take the rabbit by force, WindClan could not afford to lose prey, not with leaf-bare on their doorstep. Her cropped tail lashes behind her and the hairs on the back of her neck begin to raise, though her features still remain impassive as she awaits their answer, muscles tensed and ready to spring for WindClans prey at any given moment.

// @FEATHERPAW apprentice tag (with her apprentice I think the numbers for each patrol should be even!)

Wolfwind has the same realization that Freckleflame does, as beady eyes and strong legs bolt fast as wind, in the corner of her vision. It wasn't long before it'd be out of WindClan's paws, and run right into ThunderClan's. She see's Freckleflame's signal— and she let's her know that she's caught it with a smile. There's just enough time for the most curt of nods before Wolfwind is loosening her steps and minding leaf - litter. The unfortunate thing doesn't know it, but it's thumping it's way closer and closer to the camoflauged back of Freckleflame, and Wolfwind would round it on it's other side.

And soon enough— it's all over. Wolfwind is there to say boo with all but her voice, when it realizes this was no place to escape, but just the jaws of another hungry cat. Freckleflame has it dead before it can consider any secret third option.

Freckleflame's smile gleams like nothing else, uh, blood and all. She's quick to announce her catch, and Wolfwind only remembers after the first whoop that there still could be more prey to be had elsewhere, no need to scare everything in the area. That was much less fun 'f course, but, y'know, she had some responsibilities. " I'm lookin' I'm lookin' " she says with a smile, much contrasted to Moonwhisper's quiet musings. Perhaps someone lost their catch then. " Hope it was Sootstar, " she muses with a sniff.

When WindClan comes slammin' their paws down, Wolfwind would give her patrolmates a look saying here they fuckin' come.

They look like they've been given a chase. Lucky them, to be the ones to snag it in the end, then. Wolfwind would give the WindClanners a pointed look. But she'd blink in surprise, when they don't demand their rabbit back, or somethin'. " Guess it did! " she chirps, satisfied.

That is, at least, until Bluepool comes runnin' up, though, a curse on her tongue. When she abruptly stops in her tracks, teetering on the borders edge, she dares to sound perfectly calm and collected. So, we meet again Dapplefire. Well, wrong names aside, what kind of beef did they have. Wolfwind scoffs, her offense nearly genuine. " Ex-cuse me, you know me too " Wolfwind grumbles, shooting Freckleflame a glance that asked for the story, another time. Here is a WindClanner that would pick a fight. Unsurprising, given her blood.

" Yeah, no, " Wolfwind says, tilting her head. " Notice how the soil it died on is devoid of your grubby paws? ThunderClan, " she tells her with a shrug. A fellow Lead Warrior— a title she of course, was only really willing to claim when it could be used as a weapon— shouldn't need to be told this, anyhow. " Thanks for warmin' it up for us, though. It'll taste even better that way, " she says with a purr.

  • [ SO I RAN OUT TO THE TRACK TO GET MY CASH BACK ] WOLFWIND THUNDERCLAN LEAD WARRIOR! MENTOR 2 EMBERPAW; KIN 2 MANY.
—— SHE / HER, CONFUSED BY BUT NOT OPPOSED TO THE USE OF OTHERS
—— CURRENTLY 23 MOONS OLD. AGES EVERY 1ST.

FRIEND TO MANY! UPBEAT AND UPFRONT. MOVES THROUGH LIFE WITH AN UPBEAT EXTERIOR AND BRIGHT EYES. MAKE NO MISTAKE! TAKES HER JOB VERY SERIOUSLY. THERE'S IMPORTANCE IN SAFETY, RECKLESSNESS ONLY GETS YOU SO FAR. ONCE A FOOL, BUT NO LONGER

Featherpaw was hot on the heels of his mentor, not quite skilled enough yet for an extended chase. His marble-striped ribs were heaving by the time he trotted next to his mentor, and there was no prize at the end of the trail- just a bunch of sneering ThunderClanners, oh-so-proud of themselves, a hare in their jaws. WindClan's hare. A sting of betrayal throbbed in Featherpaw's heart for a few moments before she forced it away- the cold moons were brutal, she'd learned this. Not for a second did Featherpaw allow himself to be surprisd. Not everything would have the camaraderie of taking shelter from the rogues- they were opposing Clans. They were rivals.

Still, her glare was as stone-set on her face as ever. Sub-zero, sallow- bright and piercing as low winter sun. Disgust and annoyance wrinkled her nose up, spiky fur flaring. She was young, they could probably tell. But he would not let them think he was weak.

Hurt them before they hurt you.

Boldly, Featherpaw placed a single white paw over the scent line. "Oh no, my g-grubby paw's on the soil now." His pupils steadied into slits. They would hurt you, if you did this to them. They would taunt you and tussle you. He had been ready for a fight until kithood. Ready for starvation and desperation. "It's our hare. Give it b-buh... b-back, rat-face."

there is short time for celebration, as much as she preens beneath her clanmates praises. it seems just as soon as moonwhisper points it out do paws thunder behind them, and then — dapplefire, she calls her and it takes more force this time, the sardonically delighted gasp she makes. despite the pull of dread in her chest freckleflame turns, gazes drollfully over the border to watch them skitter to a stop before them. the first two, a warrior and an apprentice she doesnt remember seeing before — they are quiet enough, paws digging into the dirt to stop themselves where their scent line ends. it’s almost impressive, for windclan standards. but they never travel alone, like vultures come down to pick at scraps in great, mighty flocks. over the horizon comes a familiar blue face, silvery striping blazer against the dull moorland grass. she stands, lets her gaze linger on sunset red to return her look, “ oh, not a -paw anymore? did i finally earn your favor? “ she didn’t, but she lulls her head to the side anyway, “ do you liiiiike me? “

but for all her bravado, sea green eyes narrow when the lead continues. freckleflame attempts a short bark of laughter, but only lets out a little snort of indignation, “ oh, no, i hadn’t noticed. “ she simpers back despite the tense of irritation in her tone, gaze drifting down towards the cooling hare. this hare belonged to windclan, she says — and the tortoiseshell leans down, rubs her cheek exaggeratedly against its flank like an old apprentice game she’d whipped out to aggravate her peers moons ago — are you gonna eat this? it’s short fur smells strong like heather and soil, but when she’s done, it will smell like thunderclan. “ ‘cause it definitely don’t smell like you. “ the silvery tabby stays on her side of the border, toes it, bunches her haunches as if she were ready to spring, but she stays put. freckleflame feels her claws unsheathe against the leaf - littered ground, the whites of her eyes brimming against the midday sun where she stays crouched low by their catch.

then, her apprentice. a small, spike - tufted thing, blazing golden against the flat snarl of her face. she comes to a stop alongside her mentor, but unlike the silver molly, his paws continue to push forward. a leaf crunches and her ears perk, then fold, suddenly far less smiley about the situation she found herself in.

the first warrior and apprentice present seemed docile ; perhaps even their first leafbare season. they would be in for a cruel surprise as prey continues to dwindle, but she would take it as the preemptive win it was. her head lowers, the fur along her mane and spine bristling high, striking an imposing figure in an attempt to spook the apprentice into submission, keeping her eyes locked firm on beaming golden despite the way her voice lifts, addressing her mentor coldly. “ you’re gonna lose more than a hare if you don’t get her grubby paw back where it belongs. “ she growls, low, through gritted teeth. for all her bravado, she doesn’t want to be the one to knock this youth on his tail over something theyd earned, fair and square — but she was unafraid of it. a great tail lashes, a harsh slap against the ground that sends crisp leaves scattering, “ this belongs to thunderclan, but i understand th’ confusion — i coulda mistaken it for one of you, too. “ her muscles are tense. her limbs tremble with a barely - restrained anger, an urge to defend her territory burning hot in her chest. her heart pitter - patters until she feels dizzy in the head. there is a brief glance back towards wolfwind, towards moonwhisper, her paw held firm over the front of their catch. take it.

freckleflame’s body is bottlebrush, jutting at the fiery ends. a single paw lifts just off the ground, a warning like the low, crooning growl lilting from her maw. she licks her lips, suddenly too dry in the maw, sneering, ” it was sooo nice catchin’ up with you, but we’ll be takin’ our catch home now. we have bellies to feed, im sure you understand.
