drums of the city rain ♕ hunting event

. ° ✦ Teeth held tight together as Braveheart poured all of his focus onto the scent trail fading in front of him. The frost was nipping at every faint glow of prey for this patrol, and with some already coming up empty pawed, the tom felt all the more pressure to find some sort of success. Even if it were just a mouse or shrew, he would see to it at least one mouth was fed rather than none.

"I'm going this way instead... I'll be right back." He whispered lowly to his patrol as he parted from their huddle. His belly sank low to the forest floor, large paws carefully stepping around sneaky twigs waiting to snap underpaw. Braveheart held down a nervous swallow, parting his jaws to try one more time in hope of getting a sliver of a scent to follow. Much to his surprise he is given far more. Faint moorland scent but not on anything catlike- no- a rabbit! A rabbit in ThunderClan's forest- had he ever caught one before?

Braveheart quickly dropped his tail and paused, eyes darting left to right as he searched for more clues. Tufts of fur, unmistakable tracks left in the early frost. Relief washed over the anxieties that previously stirred in his gut, and Braveheart continued in determination. He held his breath as he saw the dusty-pelted creature, unaware of his hidden form while it mindlessly fed.

Another glance around. A slow count down and a prayer to StarClan. He pounces.

"Woah!" Shock and overwhelming pride overpowered the cold chill under his paws, glowing in his success. Braveheart picked up the rabbit carefully to bring back to his patrol, curious on what they had managed to find themselves.

A Longhaired chocolate tabby with a white locket and deep blue eyes. A large cat who stands tall and proud. His coat is thick with long wispy curls. Severe scars from owl talons stretch across his shoulders and another that starts from his back down his left thigh.

Lovelight watches Braveheart melt into the frosty undergrowth. She's glad to see his quiet determination—every catch matters, especially in leaf-bare, and she feels the same pull to bring back something worthwhile. With a nod to herself, she turns away, her pawsteps silent as she veers from the patrol, her senses focused on the hunt. As she moves through the familiar ThunderClan territory, Lovelight feels the quiet, respectful energy of the forest around her. Frost glints off bramble and branch, casting tiny sparkles against the muted hues of leafless trees. She parts her jaws, drawing in the faint, earthy scent of something close by. There, just ahead—a squirrel, busy scratching at the roots of an old oak, likely seeking a hidden stash of nuts. It hasn't sensed her presence yet, too absorbed in its task, and she knows she has a chance.

Dropping low, Lovelight shifts her weight carefully, testing the ground for loose leaves or twigs that might betray her approach. She moves with practiced fluidity, each step deliberate and light. Her heartbeat thrums in her ears, echoing the measured calm she strives for in moments like these. It takes only a few moments to close the distance, her paws now mere tail-lengths away from the squirrel. In one fluid motion, she springs, paws outstretched, claws extended. The squirrel notices her at the last second, letting out a faint squeak as it tries to flee, but she's faster. Her claws meet soft fur and she pulls it close, delivering a swift, decisive bite. She feels the tension of a successful catch, satisfaction spreading through her as she lifts the squirrel in her jaws. The small sliver of guilt that always rears its head when she hunts curls in her chest for a moment, but she forces it out of her mind in favor of a sense of pride.

With the prize hanging from her mouth, Lovelight pauses a moment, allowing herself to savor the small victory. She knows Braveheart and the rest of the patrol will be relieved to see her return with something substantial. Lovelight retraces her steps, careful to keep her catch secure as she moves through the forest. When she finally catches sight of Braveheart and the others, she feels a surge of camaraderie. As she approaches, she sees Braveheart's eyes light up with satisfaction, his own rabbit clutched proudly in his jaws.

〕Her paws tingled as they traveled quietly over frost covered dirt. She was still unused to the feeling of bitter cold on her pads, but she stayed quiet as she trailed behind her new mentor. It was strange, calling Wildheart her mentor, and not the tom who had taught her since she received her apprentice name from Howlingstar. The quiet apprentice knew their task today was hunting, but she seemed...distant. Worry that she would embarrass her new mentor prickled in her belly.

Suddenly, a scent she was very familiar with caught her attention. A squirrel. Her mother's favorite prey was squirrels...when they had been in the nursery together, visitors had often brought her squirrels. Silently, Ravenpaw slipped away from the shadow of Wildheart, and padded along the strengthening scent trail. She lowered herself into a crouch like her former mentor had taught her, and pulled herself carefully along the frostbitten leaves that littered the floor. Like a flash, she darted forward, and caught the squirrel without any issues. I did it! Her eyes gleamed with excitement as she carried it back to where she had last seen the patrol members together.

When she returns, she immediate spots Braveheart and his rabbit. "Oh wow" she says, her voice muffled by squirrel fur. Lovelight had been successful too, the warrior carrying a squirrel like her own in her jaws. The clan would be eating well tonight.

a longhaired tortoiseshell with low white and green eyes. Ravenpaw bares a pitch black pelt, broken up by vibrant blazes of red fire. Her fur is long, curling up around her face. She has dark green eyes like her mother, and carries a light, athletic build like her mother. She has very minimal white like her father, only having a little spot above her nose on her face, and her front left toes. Her front left leg is encapsulated by blazing fire, wrapping around her back up into her bushy fox-like tail.

𓍊𓋼 Trekking through the frosted undergrowth is much different from navigating fresh, dense greenery—Falconheart is forced to step wider and softer to avoid crunching leaves or snapping cold twigs. With the cold settling over them this early, ThunderClan can't afford to lose any prey, no matter how small. At least the other members of the patrol, including his younger sister, have managed to each catch something. Falconheart isn't sure whether that fact makes him feel better or worse when he tries and fails to pick up any sort of scent trail through the woods.

At last, he gives up on his fruitless search, his muzzle twisting into a half-snarl of disappointment. He'll be going hungry today, certainly, but he'd hoped to bring something home for the nursery's inhabitants. He tips his head, making sure to hide his scowl before he turns to face Bugpaw and Littlepaw. He can't have either of them thinking he's worried, or upset with them. They're both good apprentices, and the early frost isn't their fault. His lack of a catch certainly isn't, either. "Have either of you found anything?" The tabby tom prides himself on being a competent hunter, but beneath all the frost even a more experienced warrior would struggle to catch a scent. If either of his apprentices picks up on something that he hasn't, then it must mean he's doing something right with their training.

Hunting. This is something that she had begun to touch on with Thrashpaw already- whilst she hadn't gotten around to taking the trips to all of the borders yet under the interest of trying to help set up camp for their early leafbare, she was doing her best to show the physical skills during that period of time. She blinks at the other patrol members in appreciation before they split off, leading herself and her apprentice quietly through the undergrowth.

She is all but whispering when she speaks to her apprentice. "Remember to keep your paws light. Frost makes everything crunchy- easier to make noise." She instructs gently. Hopefully, even though it's been a short seven days, Thrashpaw had adjusted to how she spoke- even if she was light-toned, she meant what she said with conviction. If he didn't know by now, well... Antlerbreeze knows that she would learn.

Her head turns back forward, muzzle parting. There, she caught the scent of something small, and her ears picked up on the scuffling of a poor mouse trying to collect food. The cold snap was affecting them all. Her eyes softened briefly, but they hardened moments later, stalking across the ground with extremely light paws, then- muscles snapped rigid and she leapt, pouncing the mouse and delivering a swift blow to the prey. She stands up, thanking Starclan silently for another piece of prey, before turning back towards Thrashpaw with an encouraging smile. She remained if she wanted to attempt a hunt, before returning with her apprentice to the rest of the patrol.

༻ ♥༺ Mama had said that Littlepaw would be thankful for her thick, down-feather coat one day, when something called snow fell from the sky and the undergrowth grew frost. She had been right, the apprentice conceded after her first day weathering the cold.

Littlepaw didn't feel lucky now, though. Falconheart had signed them up for a hunting patrol, a menial task that Littlepaw didn't used to mind. Prey trails were relatively easy to find, except if it rained. Now, though? Nothing. Anywhere.

The apprentice looks near pathetic, weaving her way around frozen brush and leaves aimlessly, maw parted and ears rigidly upright.

When Littlepaw forces herself to abandon her search and return to her mentors side, it's hard not to let her squirrel-like tail drag in the frost and natural decay, she feels utterly defeated. Hopefully, Bugpaw didn't catch anything either, and they'd be able to share the same feelings. Falconheart's question is replied with a mere shake of Littlepaw's head, golden hues drifting to Braveheart with a wicked pang of envy. "Sh-should we keep… trying?" The apprentice looks back to her mentor with uncertainty.

〕Fresh out of the nursery, Honeypaw was determined to prove they were just as capable — no, above — the other apprentices in the Clan. They would not let comments be made about their heritage impact them more than they already had; the golden-furred apprentice would show everyone they were better than the pure-blooded cats.

But they were still a kit in everything but title. Inexperienced on how to hunt during the frosted undergrowth and unfocused by the chilled winds. They might be determined and a fire is alight within them, but the tabby doesn't pick up a single prey scent around the patrol. Honeypaw clicks their tongue in irritation, stepping beside their mentor with a flick of their ear. "Bad weather for a hunt," The newly-made apprentice huffs, watching their breath billow in front of them, ignoring the fact some of their clanmates had caught something despite the cold.

Hunting was the skill that Thrashpaw desired to know the most, every other aspect of apprenticeship is fine. He supposes. Hunting was what would keep her fed when she eventually left, it was the reason why they had all agreed to stay for as long as they have right? To build up on skills that they need? She diligently follows beside Antlerbreeze. Slowly growing more confident of this not quite right forest around them, that confidence aiding it in that separation from his mentor. "Paws light" he repeats, trying to keep it locked in their mind, inexperience clings to them. As is natural for a cat as young as her, not yet halfway through his first moon as an apprentice.

That doesn't mean anything to it though, eager to make strides in the skill he cares the most about. Anything Antlerbreeze said in this initial short week is met with stoicism, every word she says means life or death and he will take it seriously. They part their jaws in an attempt to scent their surroundings, something he had seen Antlerbreeze and other members of their patrol do. Something that he had been instructed about, something that they seem to be failing since they don't notice anything different.

There is a sense of isolation deep within her at this realisation. Maybe he's doing something wrong but he doesn't feel brave enough to ask how to do it better. Antlerbreeze makes it seem easy, that mouse seemingly no challenge. His tail puffs into a ball and swishes in frustration, why can't I do it? "This is... not cool." He mumbles to himself, feeling ears warm with embarassment. Cool had been adopted into his vocabulary by Mottledpaw, in her mind it's the worst insult one could give.

⁺₊⋆ ☀︎ ⋆⁺₊ Her mouth are clamped shut as she mutters angrily. It doesn't matter. She could have just as easily been yelling. The cream and crimson apprentice noisily declares her presence on the frost-covered forest floor with each stride. No matter how much effort she takes in keeping her steps light. When the leaves were able to blow freely, it mattered little how quietly she stepped since the noise covered her tracks, but now everything was after her. She was better than this; she shouldn't be struggling to find anything.

The apprentice was stiff, ridged, and excessively self-conscious. If her long fur got snagged in the stiff underbrush one more time, it would throw her over the edge. Dwindlingpaw slowly trekked after everyone; there was no point in ruining anyone else's hunt. She couldn't smell anything anyway. "This is stupid. The whole forest can hear me," she growls, glaring at her paws like they personally chased all the prey away.

Frost clings to his whiskers, his dark paws following through the undergrowth of the frozen forest. The bitter cold stings his paws pads, where they step on the frost - covered dirt. Deerpaw avoids stepping on any crunching leaves, with the cold settling over Thunderclan's over early, he can't afford to lose any prey he comes across. Flicking his nicked ear, he slowly blinks at the hunting group ahead of him.

He feels his tail twitch... before he splits from the hunting party with knitted brows. The faux tortoiseshell weaves his way around snow - covered bushes, maw parted to catch any scent of prey near. Suddenly a scent whiffs into his nostrils, he perks up slightly at the scent of shrew. Silently, Deerpaw slipped into a crouch, pulling himself across frost - bitten leaves and dirt. He grimaces at the cold touch on his underbelly, which the ground gives him. He is now mere tail - lengths away from the pecking shrew, the bird's back is to him as he shifts closer with wide hazel eyes. He lifts his tail from the ground with a twitch, before he waits for a few seconds...

He leaps for his distracted prey, hooked claws extand from his paws as he touches down on the bird. It's panicked shrill chirps are silenced by the killing blow he delivered with a snap of its neck, between teeth. The taste of blood flows on his tongue, making him shiver with an ear twitch. Deerpaw raises his paws, grasping the bird in his jaws, before turning to return to the patrol, head low accompanied by quiet paw steps.

As Thrashpaw grapples with frustration, Howlpaw crouches not far off, its form tense with quiet focus. This hunt holds a similar importance for Howlpaw. Every step, every twitch of its ears, is carefully measured, as if it's a game of life or death. The weight of its own expectations is heavy, pulling its shoulders low and making each movement deliberate. It needs to do this right—not for pride, but because Howlpaw feels that mastering hunting, like every skill, wll keep it alive. Howlpaw has been watching Thrashpaw and Antlerbreeze from a distance, occasionally picking up bits of instruction. Antlerbreeze's quiet confidence feels nearly as foreign to Howlpaw as it does to Thrashpaw, but it listens carefully, repeating the advice under its breath. Paws light, it thinks, mimicking the way Thrashpaw tries to absorb the knowledge, as if clinging to words will somehow embed the skill deep in its muscles.

A slight rustling catches Howlpaw's attention. Its amber eyes narrow, the world shrinking down to that faint sound just beyond the undergrowth. It takes a breath, feeling the subtle shift of air and scent as it approaches. For a moment, everything else fades—the doubts, the tension in its shoulders, even the awareness of Thrashpaw nearby. This is it. This is its chance. Howlpaw springs forward, paws reaching, only to come up empty as the small creature darts away with a startled squeak. The sharp sound of failure seems to echo, and Howlpaw freezes, jaw tight, as if willing the earth to swallow it up. The immediate flare of embarrassment twists into frustration that simmers under its fur, warming its ears and prickling down its spine. It flicks its tail in frustration, gaze flickering over to Thrashpaw, who looks equally disheartened.

Feeling a rare surge of camaraderie in shared disappointment, Howlpaw pads closer to Thrashpaw, hesitating for a moment before speaking. Its voice is low, a quiet murmur. "Guess I'm not so cool, either," it mutters, borrowing Thrashpaw's phrase with a faint, sardonic edge. It avoids looking Thrashpaw directly in the eyes, feeling the sting of vulnerability and the weight of its own inadequacies. There's a strange sort of comfort, though, in failing together. Thrashpaw's struggles mirror Howlpaw's own, and it finds solace in knowing it isn't alone in the fight to prove itself, in the fierce desire to master the skills they'll need someday.

ˏˋ*⁀➷ A single glinting eye traces Braveheart's path away from the patrol, Fallowbite's whiskers twitching. It does not pad after him, letting its mouth part as it turns to search for its own scent trail to follow.

It keeps far closer to Thrashpaw and Howlpaw than either would likely be comfortable with, keeping its sister always in sight. A roving faze searches the undergrowth, ear swiveled towards the small group of its kin. It pads quietly, careful not to disturb any waiting prey - but it seems there is little, if any, to be found. Tracking has never been Fallowbite's strong suit, and it quickly grows frustrated by the faintness of any trace of prey-scent.

Howlpaw lets a shrew slip through its paws, and Fallowbite makes a dash for it. Tufted paws thud softly against the ground, but the slight creature is already running off into its burrow. She huffs out a sigh though her nose.

The watrior turns to the group, keeping her eyes on Antlerbreeze. Its ear flicks at Howlpaw's words. "Don't take it too hard," it says softly, contorting its voice into something verging on delicate. "'S hard for even the warriors right now." They're new apprentices, they shouldn't be expected to keep up... Though, bitterly, she cannot help but think that she had already caught her first by this age, and in cold fat harsher than this. Now, grown and weathered, she misses catch after catch. Maybe clan life has made her soft.

Without another word, Fallowbite pads off to regroup. They can follow if they want; it does not turn to check. Instead, it seeks out Braveheart.

A tired smile ticks up the corner of its scarred maw at the sight of him. He holds the best catch its seen in moons, beaming like the sun itself. It's the kind of thing that might have ticked it off moons ago, but now it feels an amused sort of warmth at the sight. Of course he'd come back with a full rabbit like it's nothing. "Good catch," it rumbles out. Tentatively, it leans in to bump its head against his side in congratulations. This kind of casual touch is still foreign to her, but she makes an attempt nonetheless.

Though walking on frozen paws, Toadhop surges through the undergrowth on a mission. The tom had wondered if the frost might make things harder on the day's hunting patrol, but determination pushes the tom forward — just as the scent of squirrel does. With the stench of cold air strong, the warrior knows the squirrel is still lingering in the area, for the prey's scent is stronger.

A nearby rustle is enough of a call for the tom's paws to still. Cerulean shifts in the direction of the noise, and there. If he looks close enough, peers past the foliage between them, he can see the squirrel's form as it chews away at a stray acorn. He crouches down further, a quiet paw set one before the other, and when he draws near, it is his warrior name that guides him: a hop forward and a landing that guides unsheathed claws into the creature's form. A killing blow.

Satisfaction rises as he collects his prey. While not the biggest, it should be enough to feed one of his clanmates, at the very least. That's what's important.

. ° ✦ The rest of the hunt rolls in, some with success and others not, but Braveheart is sure the next will be fruitful for them. Each failure crept closer to a win, and though his rabbit may outshine a mouse or vole it would fill bellies all the same.

His eyes meet Lovelight's first and then Ravenpaw, the corners of his eyes curved to express the joy he felt at the sight. The apprentice should be especially proud, her tracking skills on clear display in that squirrel. Falconheart and Littlepaw share the struggle, a few other pairings come up empty-pawed but it is not from lack of capability, he would remind them. The sudden surge of weather is unexpected and many of them were simply luckier than the next.

The glance of shaggy brown fur has his heart racing from its steady pace, leaning into it's kind gesture with ease. "Isn't it? Not the bird Sunshinespot's been craving for, but it could easily feed Nightbird and her kits." Or maybe just her kittens, if their appetites were anything like his as an apprentice. "Watch, you'll get the next one and I'll be biting a dust cloud." His encouraging optimism beamed despite the chill, believing his words to come true.
