*+:。.。 Wrathpaw contends with the sun's powerful glare as he cranes his neck to look up at the outstretched arms of the great Owl Tree. He'd heard an owl lives up there, but from this angle, he can't imagine how. The tree seems to be one never-ending wall of gnarled bark, how could a den possibly be made from such unyielding material? Either way, it doesn't seem like the owl will be coming out anytime soon - they're knock-turn-all...he forgets the word Wildheart used.
Blinking the sun's rays from his eyes, Wrathpaw looks over his shoulder at his patrol companion, Briarpaw, and calls, "I found some moss over here!" He waits only a beat for the older apprentice to catch up before he begins to paw loose at the flora. It didn't take long for the sun to start baking the air around him, the urge to let his tongue hang as he pants only abated by the fear of looking silly around Briarpaw. He's uncomfortable though, finding himself thinking about Fallowpaw's complaints about being pushed too hard a little more relatable. He flicks his thick tail nervously, glancing at Briarpaw, then back at their task. It feels...dangerous to ask, but with no one around, he does so anyway..."Do you think...because we questioned Stormywing...that they're...y'know" he couldn't bring himself to finish the thought, guilt swirling in his gut.

☆⋅⋆ ── only days from her warrior name, brairpaw would usually believe collecting moss to be beneath an apprentice of her standing. but stood alongside wrathpaw, young, all too impressionable, she had a chance to do what she could not in front of her softer minded clanmates. it made the chore a little more worth her time.

her ears stand alert when he calls out, beckoning her to the base of the tree near windclan's border. "good eye," she hums as she joins him, her white paws begin working lazily at a patch of moss. the sun was relentless beating upon her dark pelt, she shakes it, shifting to place most of her body in the shade.

briarpaw's head tilts at his question, nervous despite them being alone. she could nearly taste his guilt through the thick summer air. "you don't need to worry about her feelings, wrathpaw. she wasn't even there to hear it." she speaks convincingly, as if that single fact made it okay. "your head was in the right place that day, and it was smart to hold your tongue when you did. some of our warriors are not willing to accept the truth. it is best to surround yourself by those that understand."

while true reassurance had never come easy to her, briarpaw could feign it with alarming ease. she sighs softly, resting against the tree as she watches him work. "if you have any more questions, i'm always happy to answer." she offers gently, setting the bait to spew venom as she pleased.

*+:。.。 Wrathpaw's eyes widen with a navy glow at Briarpaw's praise. Maybe finding a good moss-collecting spot wasn't a skill worth rewarding, it felt so nice having an older apprentice notice your efforts. Especially someone as refined and diligent as Briarpaw, days away from becoming a warrior herself. "Th-thank you!" he purrs, puffing out his chest, before quickly remembering they had a task at hand and scurrying to catch up.
Adjusting his sitting position to accommodate his missing leg, Wrathpaw paws carefully at the soft green flora. He wonders whose nest it'll make. A warrior's, a queen's, maybe it'll be rolled and set aside for Gentlestorm and his patients? He smiles at the idea before the conversation resumes around his previously mentioned woes. I hope none of this moss goes into Stormywing's nest... he thinks spitefully, before shaking his head uncomfortably at the feeling. He looks sorrowfully from his task to meet Briarpaw's calm amber gaze, a piece of scorching sunlight trapped behind her irises. He finds himself smiling as she compliments him again, the knot in his chest lightening. It doesn't feel great to be mad at people, to wish for less than the best for them...but it's also not good to deny the truth, right? So...that makes Stormywing, and even Roeflame bad, too, doesn't it?

He shifts his gaze back to the moss beneath his paws, pliable and soft to the touch. If he isn't careful, he risks pulling splinters from the wood the moss clings to, so he makes sure to use gentle movements with sheathed claws. He winces when he pulls a little too hard, spotting little fragments of ochre now trapped within the nesting material. Frustration bursts to life in his gut and he hears himself suddenly exclaim, "Why are they defending Stormywing when she's so mean to Fallowpaw? Why would Roeflame hit Smokepaw when he didn't even do anything?" Aggravated, the boy lashes his tail, "Ploverhop and Roaringpaw, too! They even got Dwindlingkit to be mean..." Everything had felt so much more peaceful when Wrathpaw was a kit - back before he knew how prominent kitty-pets were in his clan. Had they always been so rude, and Wrathpaw didn't know? Tornadopaw was a kitty-pet but he was nice...but he also didn't defend Darkpaw and Smokepaw when Ploverhop was acting so cruel...

"Why do we even have kitty-pets in Thunderclan?" he asks bitterly, finally lifting his gaze to glance at Briarpaw. He winces, noticing at last that he'd gone on a hateful rant. To someone as loyal and cool as Briarpaw, he probably looks like such a kit. A Ever-kit he thinks with a pained swallow. Hanging his head, he waits for Briarpaw to punish him for his comments - the way Roeflame had with Smokepaw.

☆⋅⋆ ── "it all feels.. senseless, huh?" she supports his questions, sending a thoughtful glance to the sky. "roeflame is stormywing's friend. i guess she cannot be faulted for defending her, as friends do," briarpaw pauses for only a moment, looking back to wrathpaw as he worked diligently to collect the moss. there was a subtle message within it. even if the molly did not deal in trades as frivolous as friendship, she would lead him to believe that's what they were, expected defense if need be.

"but a lead warrior raising her paw to an apprentice over a few comments? a warning would have sufficed." briarpaw swallows all levity of the situation, painted it a more serious picture. she didn't truly believe a warning would have warded off smokepaw's behavior, or that a cuff on the ear was a dishonorable punishment. speaking that wouldn't give her words the intended effect, however. "they're all mean, even if they want you to believe otherwise. i think, that deep down they know we are right, that they're scared of admitting it and don't like us because we are not." us, them. a line so clearly drawn.

she watches carefully as he asks his question, almost immediately overwhelmed by shame. the first time she had uttered something something hateful, briarpaw lacked such a dignified reaction to her own tongue. she expertly hides her amusement with a lick to the white fur of her chest before explaining histories she was not around to witness. she knew through passed on stories, would do the same for wrathpaw with her own personal spin. "the founder of our clan was a soft-hearted coward, allowed anyone with paws and a tail into these walls only to die before reaping the consequences. howlingstar was left her mess and failed to clean it up. we all suffer because of it."
