private Excuses, excuses (Scorchkit)

A tiny, mottled figure clambered over Badgermoon's body, tiny claws pricking his coat as his daughter used his broad figure as a jungle gym. Low purrs rumbled from the deputy's throat as he listened to Scorchkit's stream-of-consciousness, offering a murmured word or two in response, or turning to offer her a better view from her elevated vantage point. One little paw dangled down in front of his face and Badgermoon let out a huff, attempting to nudge the kit up a few inches to rest properly on his head. He caught the tail-end of what was unmistakably a question and stirred from his content reverie, trying to peer up at the little calico. "Mm? What was that, littlie?" he wasn't the brightest bulb in the box, that was for sure, but his affection for his children meant that he would do his very best to answer any questions they might have.

TAGS — "Why did Sootstar lose a life?" The question is carefully articulated, a cold prickle of insecurity needling its way into the warmth of familial comfort. Scorchkit sinks into Badgermoon's plush fur; her head rests right between his white-tipped ears, though her white-dipped paws dangle down his face all the same. Despite all this lovely warmth, this love, her mind has been wandering to the events of the past moon. Namely, Sootstar's mysterious loss of life. Scorchstreak had told her a little about it all, when Rumblekit had asked her to, and she'd swept Scorchkit's siblings and herself into the nursery to tell them how leaders are blessed by StarClan. But it had not scratched the core itch of the kitten's curiosity (or at least, not in a way that had been satisfying): why did Sootstar lose a life? Could Scorchkit lose her life the same way? And what did it mean, for their leader to lose a life while still blessed by StarClan? Did StarClan not care about the blue-furred molly, to let her die so callously?

"I don't get it," she concludes, whip-tail flicking quietly behind her.

The question was slightly more morbid than he had anticipated, but he supposed he couldn't blame her: if he was in her position, he'd want to know, too. It must be very strange to hear of leaders' multiple lives for the first time. Not to mention learning about death. reflected the black-and-white tom. "Well, leaders are able to take more risks than a regular cat." he responded after a pause, his dark tail swishing. "So, she fought, and took risks, and got badly hurt. But StarClan's blessing is on her, and on WindClan, and she healed enough to return to life." he wondered if the fact that Sootstar had died had scared his daughter, perhaps made her fear for his or her mother's life, or made her doubt the benevolence of StarClan. Carefully, not wanting to give her new worries but still wanting to attempt to ease her mind, Badgermoon added: "Leaders...are supposed to lose lives, darling. It's okay. It happens sometimes. Sootstar is strong, and WindClan is the most powerful Clan of them all. You don't have to be afraid...though it's okay if you are. Okay?"
