:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·: breezepaw had found wool. enough to make sure her own nest was warm, enough to spare her siblings a few scraps so theirs were too. she ducked her head around others upon her return to camp. before she had wanted them all to see her, to relish in her victory. she wanted the chance to be the object of envy, but there was a problem with having something others wanted. sometimes, they wouldn't just sit there wanting. they'd take.
her nest was a mess by the time she finished, nothing anyone should marvel. the apprentice had tried to remember the well crafted familiarity of her shared nursery nest, what it looked like, exactly where each clump of moss was placed. even after failing to reproduce it, she didn't dare grapple with the thought that the comfort could have been from a who rather than a tangible what. besides, it didn't matter if it looked pretty, or if dried out moss occasionally wedged past her fur into her skin. it mattered that it was warm.
so bent upon insuring her own scraps of wool were hidden enough to ward off wandering eyes, breezepaw forgot to keep an eye on the loose gifts placed haphazardly in her littermate's nests nearby. her eyes widened as they flicked up to check. while counting, she landed upon some other apprentice eyeing her prize. someone else craning their neck to inspect it and take. breezepaw stiffened instantly, tufted tail whipping behind her. "no." her teeth clack together with the word's conclusion, heart hammering in her chest. they'd hear it and know she was a fraud. tongue drawing over her muzzle, breezepaw collected herself with a breath. "that's not yours, don't touch it."
