"One more time- and remember! Keep tall until you see me about to lunge, then you duck. Use your surroundings too- the dust, the sun. You got this!"
The commanding but up-beat instructions would be hard to miss if one were to be just outside of camp.
The culprit? Echolight. Standing a fox-length away from her apprentice.
Normally, Echolight refrained from using unsheathed claws in their combat training, but with them being so close to the prying eye the calico had told Leechpaw that they would be using claws today. The apprentice was usually rather stoic, so any enthusiasm or resentment was concealed with ease to Echolight.
So far, the tom had proven to be a fine hunter, and with the right fine-tuning, could even supersede Echolight herself one day. Combat however, he was still lacking in. Yet, the warrior was sure that with the right encouragement he could turn what he thought were his weaknesses into his strengths.
"Keep your fur flat as well, in a real battle the element of surprise can be vital. If your enemy underestimates you, you can utilize it!" She added, the toms naturally sleek pelt already giving him an edge, but the instinct to fluff out your fur to give yourself a bigger appearance was one that was hard to beat, even for Echolight.
She gives him a nod now, bracing herself for his charge.

He didn't like this. Leechpaw hated spars and always avoided them. He had never sparred with an apprentice before and with White-Eye sudden disapperance he had been left unsupervised with his training for quite sometime before Echolight had become his new mentor. After thier conversation the other day he had hoped he had made his point across to her but apperantly not. Otherwise she wouldn't have suggested a combat practise between the two. He felt anxious during the whole training. Didn't make it any better that he was expected to use his claws, that Echolight would do so as well. He dread the potential danger of this. How he could end up into a position that would end up making him vulnerable. He didn't wanted to contunie but how was he suppode to say that when eyes where on him?.

With anxiety he flinked his tail, listening to what his mentor instructed him to do next time he would charge her. Keep tall and make sure to keep his fur fla..use his enviroment to block her own moves. Leechpaw swallowed, his teeths clenched more tightly then usual. He gave a short nod to let her know he understood.

Clawing at the dirt underneath his paws, Leechpaw sprinted forward once more straight towards his mentor but in the last second instead of lunging straight at her dodged to her right side, and lashed out a paw at her....

The silver tabby watched in the way one might watch a particularly disgusting bug scurrying way; a displeased show of his teeth at the display. Fighting was far too messy and barbaric, he had not even the slightest interest in getting his fur messy or having something as wretched as the scars that marred Echolight's own face. He supposed when cats were that ugly they didn't care how filthy or cut up they got while trying to better themselves. The tabby apprentice was perfectly content just hunting and carrying on in his aloof and princely manner but sometimes he had to pause and watch the coming and going of the clan just to shake his head at it all.
"How long has he been an apprentice?" The young tom asked to whichever cat was already nearby and eyeing the training session, though he didn't pause to let them answer for very long, "It feels like Leechpaw has been living up to his namesake and just wasting everyone's time if he's still doing combat training. Didn't Galeforce and Sunsetbreeze get apprenticed after him and are already warriors? Pah, how is he still doing this? Ugh." While he kept his voice low enough the entirety of it might be missed to the duo, his tone pitched enough that a few words were just loud enough that anyone in passing would pick them up.
A haughty flick of his tail and turn of his head showed his losing interest in the spectacle and he set about grooming his paws meticulous where he sat instead.

Wisteriapaw, Hyacinithbreath and Moonshadow's child... Despite her disgruntlement with one of their parents Sootstar doesn't pass it onto the child. When she passes by she does hear some of the mumbling and grumbling though and whiskers quiver against a chill breeze. "Some cats take more time to learn, and Leechpaw is doing just fine." Shocking wisdom and lenience from the usually cold leader. "Watch them and perhaps you'll learn a thing or two from Leechpaw... make your own mentor proud." Instead of whining and groaning... that'd do him no good...

Weaselclaw is hardly a fan of Leechpaw's, and part of him agrees with Wisteriapaw's crude comments. Leechpaw is past warrior-aged, had been training since Weaselclaw had joined the moorland Clan himself. He doesn't doubt Echolight's technical abilities, but part of him also wonders if Leechpaw is so behind because he spent so long moping around after Rosepaw's death.

Can he blame the black tomcat? No, hardly. Weaselclaw remembers standing at Rosepaw's grave, realizing that a WindClanner had been stolen right from one of their patrols. He had grieved with the rest of his Clanmates. But in his experience, moping does not alleviate the pain. Life goes on, especially Clan life.

He will not disagree with Sootstar, though. He nods at her words and says, voice uncharacteristically quiet, "He'll get there soon."

IS IT OVER YET - CAN I OPEN MY EYES?
periwinklepaw | 04 months | demi-boy | he/they | physically easy (pacifist) | mentally easy | attack in bold #ccccff

Periwinklepaw spares his brother an unusually cold glance - why does he always have to be so rude? - before turning his gaze back to the spar at hand. He can only feel a sense of anxious apprehension as he watches. He's worried - worried they might get hurt, that this might go to far. Worried that someday this won't be pretend, that they'll be fighting the other clans or loners or rogues or starclan forbid even being attacked by hawks again. "D-d-don't be so rude," he mutters quietly, but his words lack any bite - hushed and quiet and forlorn. He wants to look away but he can't - he's hyper aware of sootstars presence after all. So he just sits there, watching, muscles taught and tense as he quietly hopes that at least leechpaw wins this spar.
