it had started with a shriek. thrushpaw had come half running, half stumbling from the apprentices den to her gaggle of friends, wailing a beetle in my nest, there’s a beetle in my nest! a collective chorus of ewwws had lifted from the group of youth, some giggling as thrushpaw began to violently lick at her striped tortoiseshell pelt. she had thwapped rabbitnose where he had been beside her, lounging in the spots of sun, a grin on her maw. for old times sake? she’d trilled, before calling a cheery ‘ we got it! ‘ towards the frazzled apprentice — giving no time for her father to answer either way. leafbare had been harsh thus far, and she would take any opportunity to fight that frigid, sinking feeling it wrought.

so that was how they ended up here. the ” i dunno which is hers. “ she probably should have asked, before standing awkward and too tall for the low - risen apprentices den looking over the scraps of moss and stray feathers, ” but there might be more — i figure they’re movin’ in from the cold. “ just as she says it, though, something catches the light. its an iridescent green ; gleaming like the scales of an adder, its long, sleek body glinting a strange red where it catches the sun through twining gorse leaves overhead. her pupils blow, crouching low on her forelimbs ; her thick pelt brushes obnoxiously at the canopies around her, but she adjusts her footing and..

its a delicate move, picking a beetle up with your teeth. she swore she’d seen sparkwing crunch one in half once, and promised herself she would never know the horrors of that. her teeth are clamped around it’s fat body when she lifts again, vibrant green wings buzzing loud and angrily against her face. she makes a sniffing sound, flutterbeat wings tickling the edges of her nose. stumbling back a bit into the light of camp, freckleflame releases a giddy sound, something so familiar yet so far away. a giggle, a standing ghost of her younger days. her head whips towards rabbitnose, emerald eyes aglow, much like the days she’d come hopping to him with her latest catch, ” check — this out! “ gritted through clenched teeth and frantic buzzing. a tighter grip, a faint pop, and it begins to slow, wings spreading the same color as her sparkling gaze.

unspecified maine coon heritage born of sunfreckle's kittypet background shows itself in large, round paws and tufted, long - furred toes set upon thick, tabby - splotched limbs. a characteristic lack of personal space leads her to a slouching, touchy posture, often inclined to lean or bump against her peers, all while bearing a wide, bright - eyed grin. she seems to sing confidence from every laugh, every word.. that can't all be for show, can it?

When there's bugs terrorizing his clanmates, its him and his family who are ON THE JOB. Thrushpaw and her friends might think they're gross, but Rabbitnose and Freckleflame know how to appreciate a good bug. And so, he follows his daughter into the apprentice den to find the beetle that is terrorizing poor Thrushpaw.

"I don't know either." He comments as he looks around at all the nests. Freckleflame is right, though, the bugs are getting cold and looking for warmth....And so they crawl into cats nests. Poor little guys. He'd keep them warm in his own if he could....But Sunfreckle might explode. Not to mention the other warriors would not appreciate all the bugs. "You're right, they're looking for spots to burrow and keep warm." He agrees.

And so the hunt begins.... He carefully searches through nests, making sure not to displace any items as he searches for the invader. Freckleflame finds it first, though, as he hears the sound of buzzing and a giddy little giggle. He grins and follows her out of the den to see her newest catch.

"Ooohh, thats a pretty one! Nice job, Freckles!" He chirps, proud of his daughters bug hunting skills. It's like she was a kit again, and remembering those days makes him feel old. He feels old too, sometimes. "Careful not to swallow it like Sparkwing did that one time." He reminds her, remembering how his son proved he was his son by choking on something that shouldn't have been in his mouth anyways. He chuckles at the memory.

His first litter has gotten so big now....But they still get to enjoy bug hunting together, and he thinks thats special. Bug hunting will be a family tradition for generations to come, he is sure of it!

"This won't be the last time someone finds a beetle in their nest I'm sure...More fun for us though, right?" He says with a chuckle.

Unlike her father and her littermates, Mousenose thinks bugs are kinda icky, but she’s not about to admit that out loud. She’s sure if she were Thrushpaw, she’d be squealing too—who wants a beetle crawling through their fur while they’re sleeping? Aside from her sister, of course. The warrior sits just outside the apprentice’s den, running a tongue through disheveled fur and watching as Rabbitnose and Freckleflame fawn over a beetle. She supposes it is kind of pretty, but it’s still just a bug. Big whoop, she thinks to herself.

They emerge from the apprentice's den victorious, it seems. Mousenose snorts before she calls to her father and sister, “So whatcha gonna do with it now? I mean, if you’re not gonna eat it.” She smiles slyly, her tail flicking as she remembers Sparkwing’s face after ingesting his own delicious insect tidbit.
