private good things fall apart || nightbird

Two nights had passed since Little Wolf's tragedy. It hadn't felt like it...it still felt like if she woke up from this dream, then everything would be back to normal. She knew her clanmates had tried to talk to her, but she couldn't hear their voices. The world around her was paralyzingly numb. She couldn't feel anything besides grief...the wound from several days prior felt like noting more than tingle. You failed Thunderclan. the three words were all she could replay in her mind. The vision of her mangled, slowly slipping away friend haunting her dreams every time she tried to close her eyes. Even if she wanted to sleep, she couldn't. After Little Wolf had passed, she had found out that she and Hailstorm had just become mates. Mates Little Wolf had found love again after Blazestar...and because of Flamewhisker's oblivion, that happiness had been taken away from her yet again.

The group had taken shelter for the night, mostly everybody sleeping peacefully. Flamewhisker hadn't even tried to fall asleep...she already knew it was pointless. I miss Flycatcher... What a selfish thought, but it was true. He always made her feel better...feel safe. There was nothing more she would rather do than to press against him, and let her tears out. Hailstorm would give anything to have Little Wolf... Her heart stung, guilt that she had a mate to return home to washing over her.

A piercing cold breeze ruffled her pelt, but she remained unfazed. She stared in the direction of her sleeping clanmates, but she kept her distance from the group.

brutal tragedies were the way of this life they led, whether or not anyone liked that reality it would never change. still, nightbird was finding it difficult to remain withdrawn, to brush this death off. she certainly wasn't as close with little wolf as most of the others, but the molly's child was her apprentice, her brother a close friend and mother her leader. to picture any of their faces as the news was laid out had a dark feeling settling in her chest.

so were the woes of clan life, she supposed. before thunderclan she had only looked out for herself, it would have been easy to fix them all with a gaze of stone and utter her broken promises. but the more integrated she became, the more difficult it was becoming. there was a strong urge to pull away, her brain screaming in it's ivory coffin to isolate from these feelings, cats who made them erupt. however, doing so would be the antithesis of her own ideologies. nightbird had failed, a nest of ill-fated words and failure to follow through on them to the fullest extent awaited her in thunderclan's camp. it was her duty to now lie in it.

her sleep had been fitful for the journey's majority, but now her eyelids flashed with images of blood stained snow and a mangled obsidian pelt when she closed her eyes. they taunted her, rightfully so. at some point, nightbird had given up. a quick walk to clear her head would suffice, but when the warrior stirred she came face to face with a dulled green gaze. flamewhisker, undoubtedly exhausted but refusing to sleep. a quick stretch, and nightbird rose, padding carefully over to the other lead warrior.

"you'll need to sleep eventually, we still have to make it all the way home." her voice was withdrawn, cool as the breeze that terrorized these mountains. flamewhisker undoubtedly needed comfort, but nightbird couldn't give it. the right words in these situations always failed to formulate, she had to fall back on logic, reasoning. "they still need us to guide them." even though the words were stated aloud, it was a reminder for herself. a quiet but persistent mantra that cut through her mind when it was more keen on wallowing. the thunderclanners needed to see that those meant to be leading them through this journey were present and clear minded, she feared some of them may just crumble if not.

  • NIGHTBIRD she/her, lead warrior of thunderclan, twenty-six moons
nightbird is a small black smoke molly with pale silver eyes. a loner turned thunderclanner, her loyalty and drive to provide for her clan is unwavering. however, she is not known for harboring a bleeding heart, instead equipped with sarcastically fueled wit, brutal honesty, and a sharply edged tongue.
