border HAVE MERCY ON ME ♡ border tour

Two borders down, two left to go. Skyclan was one of the easier borders to patrol, and one of their neighbors that she personally didn't mind so much as the others. Not long ago she felt contempt for the pine-dwelling clan for openly allowing kittypets into their ranks. She used to think it made them weak, impure, lesser warriors because of it. With everything that Thunderclan had suffered the past few moons… with how much she had lost to the same horrible prejudices that she herself used to be blinded by… her heart had changed. She knew now that it didn't matter what ran through a cat's blood; it was their heart that mattered, their loyalty and dedication to their clanmates.

She allowed her cold cerulean gaze to fall to Ivorypaw, remembering all-too-well how her kittypet-blooded apprentice had almost lost her life not long ago in a poisoning attempt. She'd been sent away by Howlingstar for her own safety when the kittypet hate crimes had gotten truly bad, and she'd only just now been allowed to return. And then she glanced to Meadowpaw, her second apprentice, the little spitfire who reminded her so much of her younger self. Meadowpaw, who had been raised to hate non-clan born cats, brainwashed into following her tyrannical uncle under the false assumption that what they were doing was the best thing for the clan. She knew Meadowpaw had never wanted to follow Skyclaw. She just didn't want to lose her family, and it was an unfair position for someone so young to be put in. Now that it was all over, Palefire hoped she could be the guiding influence that both girls needed to move forward.

A light breeze ruffled her fur as they slowed along the border, the air crisp with the quickly approaching leaf-fall chill. The line between the two clans was growing more obvious now, as their own oak trees began to change color from green to red, and the pine trees of Skyclan's territory remained unchanged. The sun beat gently down through the wash of colors to light her apprentice's faces as she smiled down at them. "This is the Skyclan border. They're currently lead by Orangestar, and last I knew, her daughter Cherryblossom was deputy. Skyclan live similarly to us, with two notable differences." She paused briefly, her voice softening ever-so-slightly. "They're known for their climbing abilities, and for being the only clan to freely admit kittypets to join." Meadowpaw's family had many roots here, the kittypet side through Blazestar, and she wondered briefly how much the red tabby knew of her family's heritage.

Meadowpaw quiets as they approach their border with SkyClan, her features drawing into a thin line of unreadability. The kittypet clan was one that she had been istructed to hate by both her mother and her uncle. It is hard to cast aside such prejudices, even now. Hard to see the clan of the pines as anything other than a drain on the forest's precious resources. They do nothing but take someone had said to her once and the story of the fat lazy kittypet her uncle had once told to her rings through her mind even now as she struggles to remind herself that it likely wasn't true.

Blazestar was her grandfather, she knows, and she knows she has family across the border as well. Skyclaw and Moonwhisper had been hesitant to speak of them, though, and Meadowpaw had not cared very much to ask. Why should it matter to her anyways? It's not like she would ever get to know them, not in the same way she knew Burnstorm or Raccoonstripe. Still, she finds her verdant green eyes scanning the tree line for a passing patrol, curiosity making her go still.

So wrapped up in her thoughts as she is, she almost misses her mentors words. they're known for their climbing abilities and for being the only clan to allow kittypets to freely join "But why?" she cannot help the question that blurts from her mouth and even as she says it, her gaze slides to her fellow apprentice, shame making her cheeks burn but she does not apologize, nor does she take her question back.

She's no stranger to the fact that SkyClan is looked at oddly for the fact that they freely allow kittypets to join their ranks, daylight warriors like her were not a thing in the other clans. Personally Florabreeze always thought it was strange, at first she thought that maybe it was because they were the only clan close to Twolegplace but she had learnt that wasn't the case. It truly hadn't been a question that she chased so hearing the young ThunderClan apprentices question brought her pause, why they were open she didn't know. "I like to think it's because we tell some pretty good jokes" she chimes in as she dips her head in greeting to the small group gathered. "buuut we do serve the clan without using as much resources as other clans, we hunt but rarely, if at all, eat the prey since we have food waiting back with our Twolegs" she realised as she babbled on that maybe she was intruding on something that her mentor had wanted to answer.

An apologetic gaze is given to Palefire with a light chuckle "apologies, didn't mean to interrupt, are you showing your apprentices the borders?" The maine coon could only assume as much. With a tail she gestures for Jellypaw and Sfogliatella to stand approach SkyClan's side of the border with her, glancing at her own pair of apprentices in the anticipation of questions of their own. To be honest she had a pretty neutral opinion of their neighboring clan, while she's aware of the skirmish that happened at the border and that rather vocal anti-kittypet members that seemed to dwell in ThunderClan she didn't see the need to hold it against them. Not everyone was like that and Florabreeze was quite easy to trust others, having a big belief in second chances, besides she didn't even know if anyone here participated in that (she didn't really care if they did either).

Of all the borders they will visit today, Ivorypaw feels herself most curious about SkyClan's. She'd heard plenty of vitriol from Scarletpaw and her mother about the "kittypet Clan," and it had compounded over time. The white she-cat's curled ears flick attentively as Palefire begins talking to her and to Meadowpaw. "They're known for their climbing abilities, and for being the only Clan to freely admit kittypets to join." Ivorypaw's whiskers twitch; she imagines a world where her Clanmates did not look upon her with disdain, where her prey was not poisoned, where she could live without ridicule.

Meadowpaw's immediate response is, "But why?" The ginger she-cat throws her a look, and Ivorypaw cannot read it. She bristles, but before she can reply to her co-apprentice, a SkyClan cat approaches. She is dark-furred, and her pelt wears a myriad of strange scents, primarily pine sap and something comforting, familiar — the odd, worn-leather scent of Twoleg hands.

Ivorypaw's dark eyes round with feeling. Is this one of SkyClan's daylight warriors? The scent of housefolk is unmistakable, one she fears she will never forget, truly. The warrior is cheerful, telling them she serves the Clan without using the resources her Clanmates do. "We hunt but rarely eat the prey since we have food waiting back with our Twolegs," she explains. Ivorypaw says, without thinking, "Wow!" She blinks, imagining a world where her housefolk had not left her and her mother on the Thunderpath, a world where she could do her warrior duties and return to the life she'd once known.

"Is it hard, living like that? Like... split, like that?" She eyes the daylight warrior with big, curious eyes, not caring if Meadowpaw will rebuke her later for her questions.

Oh, another ThunderClan patrol. Lionpaw was slowly growing more comfortable with walking this side of the forest again, though he could not help the tension that wracked his limbs every time he saw a group approaching from across the way. He knew that he wouldn't see Skyclaw again—ever again—but the apprehension still lingers. Now it's Burnstorm that Lionpaw needs to watch out for. A faint heartache clutches the boy's chest as he thinks of his ThunderClan kin — in another world, if things were different, maybe he would have known them better.

While Florabreeze chit-chats with the mentor and apprentice duo, Lionpaw gets to work by brushing his cheek against trees and nearby rocks. His blue hues flick upward and they land upon the red tabby she-cat in particular. Little does he know, the apprentice he's observing from across the border is none other than his niece.
