private HEAR IT IN THE SILENCE ✧ . butterflytuft

✧ . Graced with extra downtime today, it’s the nursery that Greeneyes chooses to spend it in. It’s been a moment since he’s been able to catch up with Butterflytuft, since he’s been able to sit with his eldest sister for longer than just a moment. He settles beside her, a meal placed between them, and a brightened gaze watching his youngest niece play in the nursery’s outskirts.

She’s growing so fast, ” he notes with a warm smile. Perhaps faster than her older siblings — had they grown so fast too? It feels like just yesterday he’d heard the news, like just yesterday his panicked gaze was relieved by the sight of Butterflytuft’s safety, by the small kit that returned with her. “ Isn’t she?

He watches for a moment longer, before his mind drifts away in the same fashion it’s been, as of late. He settles into moonlit secrets, the comfort of another face. Fi — how is he doing right now? What is he doing? Collecting herbs? Treating wounds? Does Fireflyglow miss him, just as Greeneyes does now? Greeneyes’ paws shift, suddenly restless as a giddy smile grows on his face at the thought of his mate. His head dips away from his sister’s gaze, hidden by the bite of prey he takes.

His mate — Fi is his mate. His best friend loves him, and Greeneyes loves his best friend. The tom still can’t believe it. And he can’t believe how stupid he was, how long it took him to place a label on the feelings he’d held for the medicine cat, either.

A snow-masked face lifts. “ Butterfly? ” he seeks the tortoiseshell’s attention, “ When did… When did you know you loved Dandelionwish? ” And then his eyes grow round, fear-laced at the wound he must’ve opened with such a question — a wound Fi won’t be able to mend.

I mean — “ he stutters out, crooked tail twitching beside him as his face grows hot, “ You don’t have to — You don’t have to answer that, if… if you don’t want to. ”

The queen is always eager to spend some time with her siblings, and she eagerly shifts to make room for her brother as he settles beside her with a meal. Her ears twitch at Greeneyes' voice, her gaze following his to where Budkit is tumbling about on oversized paws. A soft purr rumbles in her throat, pride and affection swelling in her chest. "She is," Butterflytuft murmurs, warmth in her voice. "Seems like she was only just brought back here yesterday...They grow up too fast." Her thoughts briefly flick to her older kits, now almost warriors. It's bittersweet, watching them all race toward adulthood. She turns her head slightly, noticing the shift in Greeneyes' posture. His smile is bright but distant, lost in thoughts she can't quite reach. Before she can ask what's on his mind, his next question catches her off guard.

When did you know you loved Dandelionwish?

For a heartbeat, Butterflytuft freezes, her breath hitching in her chest. She hadn't expected that. The mention of her mate sends a familiar ache through her. But when she looks at her little brother's wide, fearful eyes, she knows he isn't trying to hurt her. There's something more behind his question. Something personal.

A soft sigh escapes her, and she settles herself more comfortably beside him, the sadness in her eyes tempered by understanding. "It's alright, Greeneyes," She reassures him gently. "You don't have to worry about bringing it up." She takes a moment to think, her eyes growing distant with memory. "I think I always knew, in a way," She admits quietly. "Dandelionwish was just...there for me. Every moment, every time I needed him. Even when I didn't realize I needed someone. He was always more my friend than anything. But I knew for sure when..." She trails off, her throat tightening at the sweet memory of stumbling upon him in the forest, practicing his confession to her. "I heard him say it about me. It was in that moment I realized just how much he meant to me. How much we meant to each other."

Butterflytuft swallows, blinking away the sting of tears before turning her soft gaze back to her brother. "But it doesn't have to be that way for everyone. Sometimes, love sneaks up on you. It sounds like...maybe it's already found you, huh?" A small, knowing smile pulls at her lips as she watches him, hoping he'll feel more comfortable sharing. She’s heard the rumors, but hasn’t been able to confirm if they’re true or not.
