She isn't a fool.
The two nests so close they'd been nearly one, now solidly separated, the couple of tail-lengths between them a vast oasis; the little gifts and trinkets piled up in her daughter's nest that day she'd awoken sleepily to see Falconsong moving them. The two of them padding out of camp, then only one returning to complete his grim mission, and the long stretch of time afterwards where her daughter had been nowhere to be found. Lupinesong's slumped shoulders and fewer words, the constant mutters and awkward glances around camp. And, though she wasn't so nearly as entrenched in clan gossip as her daughter, the whispers and murmurs that had been winding their way through camp.
Oh, she's very familiar, though her first mate hadn't been so courteous as to provide her . . . you know, a reason, and an explanation, and a goodbye, and all those other trimmings most cats gave when they were ending a relationship. Just waking up to a cold nest, an empty mouth, and a bellyful of kits. She has to force an instinctive scowl off her face when she reflects on the memory, even if only for a moment.
" Lupinesong? " Her voice is as soft and gentle as the pawsteps of a seasoned warrior approaching a mouse. Maybe she can, for this brief time, not be completely useless as a mother. She nods to the empty space beside her daughter, and then, after an affirmative meow, takes a seat. Slowly and deliberately, she scoots closer until she can press her shoulder to Lupinesong's, feeling her chest tighten slightly at the contact.
Carefully, as if trying not to startle a deer, she mrrows, " How are things with you and Falcongaze, love? "
