SOOTSTAR
It was the sun-high before the gathering. In the time it takes for another border patrol to go out and return they’d be preparing to leave, and this time most of them would not come back. A great portion of the clan would head out with Scorchstreak and the groups of the other clans to the mountains. The clan was about to feel deathly small and the leader fears for their strength in these trying times.

”All cats old enough to race the moors gather beneath the Tallrock for a clan meeting!”

The clan crowds below, the place where Badgermoon once sat remaining empty. Her stomach churns, she had just barely managed to squirm by- something like that could not happen again… She isn’t sure who to thank for her luck, maybe many moons ago it would’ve been StarClan.

”The gathering is tonight. I’m going to keep our attending group to those leaving tonight for the mountains. @SCORCHSTREAK , @RATTLEHEART , @Periwinklebreeze. , @SEDGEPOUNCE , @MOUSEPAW. , @milkpaw , @SCORCHPAW and @LUCKYPAW , you’re all with me tonight.” She doubts they needed a reminder, she could tell most of them were dreading this night. ”Make sure you all get an ample amount of sleep. You’ll need it.”

Turning her head in the crowd she finds @WOLFSONG , ”The medicine cats before you would give me traveling herbs to go to the moonstone. Do you have any to spare for the cats leaving tonight?” Of course it’d only temporarily help, but anything to provide them more strength and energy.

──ᨒ↟↟ᨒ↟ᨒ↟↟ᨒ── His own stare lingers in Badgermoon's place, a wrinkle forming in the muscles of his forehead. He frowns, and then glances toward the medicine cat den, where he knows his kits likely pester each other into a frenzy. And then to the direction of the badger set, his remaining eye creasing slightly at the corner in concern. During this time, Sootstar names those attending the Gathering, all of them the volunteers for the journey to be undertaken, and his thoughts are temporarily disrupted when she addresses him next.

"Of course," he says, inclining his head with aplomb, even as apprehension twists in his chest. "Before departing, you are all welcome to visit the medicine den." It is a great series of obstacles that faces them all. He recalls the splintering chorus of howls in his dream and represses an instinctive raising of hair on his neck.

WOLFSONG of WINDCLAN FORMER ROGUE TURNED MEDICINE CAT. 38 MOONS, HE/HIM, NPC X NPC. MATES WITH SUNSTRIDE (07/05/2023). BIOGRAPHY, PINTEREST, & PLAYLIST.
  • ★★★☆☆ WOUNDS: You're (mostly) in safe paws. You'll know if he's less experienced if he asks for your permission to try a treatment. No wound can scare him away from knowledge.
★★★☆☆ INFECTION: He can prevent most infections. If you feel feverish, let him know; he'll hum thoughtfully over herbs and sniff your wound before saying, "With your blessing..."
  • ★☆☆☆☆ ACHES & PAINS: If you complain to him of pain, he'll ask where. If it's a headache, you'll likely feel a bit better. For anything else, "Try this, if you'd like, and tell me how you feel."
★☆☆☆☆ BROKEN BONES: At best. he can ask you to remain lying down in the den. He may try to distract you with conversation while he considers what herb to feed you.
  • ★★★★★ TRAVELING HERBS: Going somewhere? No worries; Wolfsong knows just what you need to stay hale and healthy during your journey. The rest is up to you.
★★☆☆☆ KITTING: Thanks to Starlingheart, he's better prepared for the arrival of kits, but any complications will need a little faith and a lot of luck.
  • ★☆☆☆☆ POISONS: It's best if you avoid eating anything unfamiliar to you— it's probably just as unfamiliar to Wolfsong. The best he can do is offer you yarrow and sit with you.
★★☆☆☆ ILLNESS: If it's white or greencough, you'll likely recover. Otherwise, prepare for odd concoctions and the usual request that you consent to a little trial-and-error.

Though Mousepaw's eyes too linger on the place in which Badgermoon would normally be, he looks towards it in disgust instead of confusion or sympathy, the questions of how could someone that had promised to uphold and protect WindClan be so hare-brained as to try and attack the leader - especially right outside of camp. It didn't fully make sense to the older apprentice, but it didn't have to. What Sootstar said was law, and he trusted her to be truthful and to use her best judgement in telling the clan what they needed to know, and if it didn't make sense then it didn't need to at the moment.

Eyes flickered towards Sootstar as she began to speak, chest puffing out slightly as he heard his name announced to go on the journey once more. He had volunteered, sure, but he had also been approved to go, and it filled him with some odd sense of pride to know that while on this journey - wherever they went - he'd be part of something important. Head nod silently as the cats that were to gather that night were told to get rest, and that they could visit Wolfsong's den to get some herbs to help with the start of the journey. He almost didn't want to go, Wolfsong's children being so young and loud and potentially sticky, but he needed his energy so would visit before leaving that night.

SOOTSTAR
Pleased to hear Wolfsong has some to share she allows him to advise those going on the journey to see him in his den before they depart. Once all is silent once more she advances.

Scanning the crowd for a patchwork pelt she flicks her tail motioning him forward, "Mousepaw, step forward."

As the apprentice makes his way to the front of the crowd Sootstar descends from the Tallrock.

Now standing before Mousepaw she looks to the clan, "While it is early, Mousepaw has proven himself to be a capable and reliable apprentice. I believe he deserves to be sent off as a warrior tonight." A smile shows on her face as she looks back to Mousepaw.

"I, Sootstar, leader of WindClan look down upon Mousepaw. He has trained hard to learn the ways of a WindClan warrior and I commend him as a warrior in his turn." She looks at the apprentice, "Mousepaw, do you promise to protect and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?"

'I do.' He would say before she proceeds.

"Then I give you your warrior name. From this moment on you will be known as Mouseflight. WindClan honors your judgement and speed and we welcome you as a full warrior of WindClan!" The name was fitting, he had been a flash of color down in the tunnels chasing after Bluepaw. On top of that, Mousepaw had been known to be a swift learner as an apprentice. All WindClan cats could be described as swift, but Mouseflight was the whole package. Fleet footed. Sharp minded.

Stepping forward she touches her nose to his forehead and draws away upon recieving the lick on her shoulder. The clan roars congratulative chants.

Though she has undeniably grown into Badgermoon's broad frame, the girl shrinks herself tonight. Badgermoon's seat remains empty, and she swears she can feel the weight of Sootstar's stare on her back, though the blue smoke seems to be carrying on business as usual. Her head swims. Between her father's betrayal and the preparation for the journey, she feels as if her joints will split apart, her anxiety spiraling in both directions. She'll be at the gathering, and then she'll be up, away into the mountains with her mother and her brother– and at least she'll have them, she supposes. She mourns the fact that her father, her mentor, will not see her off; and that mourning spikes into rage, and then back to mourning, alternating too fast for her to follow. Why did he run away? she wonders. Why did he attack Sootstar? And if StarClan had seen the betrayal, then why couldn't they have told her, too? Maybe it would have eased the hurt.

Other cats' voices blend in static fuzz. Wolfsong asks them to visit him in his den, and so she will oblige once the meeting concludes, before they make their grand departure. Yes; she will visit Wolfsong, and then she will lay awake in her nest, staring up at Silverpelt and asking it why? Why was it her mentor that had to grow sick with want? Why was it her father who was scorned by WindClan for all time to come? She hardly hears Mouseflight's new name above the din of her own worry. But, struck by the need to look attentive, she mumbles, "Mouseflight!"

He knew it was coming but it still somehow surprised him that Mousepaw got to be a warrior at last - and early at that. Chest swelled with pride once more as the apprentice was called forward, his paws tingling with excitement as he moved towards Sootstar, soft smile curling at his lips as the charcoal-colored leader speaks once more. He deserved this, yes, and the fact he was able to go on the journey not as a 'paw but as a full warrior of WindClan made things better - it showed WindClan was strong.

Eyes watched Sootstar carefully, not wanting to miss his queue. He had seen so many warrior ceremonies, he almost thought he heard wrong when Sootstar continued to speak, calling upon... herself... to look down upon him to be given his warrior name. "I do." He spoke when the time came, and upon being given his name - Mouseflight - his chest swelled once more with pride before moving forward to lick Sootstar's shoulder before looking out towards the clan for his small moment of glory before finally returning to the crowd when the time was right.

Mind lingered on the words that had been spoken the second he sat however, and Mouseflight found himself thinking not of the journey to come, and he was no longer fully listening to what was being said. Had he imagined all those times before when Sootstar had mentioned StarClan to give the names to those that became warriors, or was this time different somehow? Although he knew Silverpelt would not be able to be seen in the sky at this time of day, the newly named warrior found himself looking up for just a moment, concern burying itself deep in his gut.

✦ .   ˚ .   It had come sooner than he thought. Time held still for none of them, however terribly they may wish it so– Sootstar stands before them as she always had, and sends her warriors to their distant fate. Sunstride sits stonily at the front of the crowd, an expression not born of anger but of sorrow for those that they would lose. Upon the time of WindClan's warriors returning to their moors, it would be a changed place. Surely those that they have left behind would join the dead. If not all of them, at least some. That it is a fellow lead warrior among them, and one of Sootstar's own children...it is an unpleasant notion, and one he tries not to linger on for long.

(Just as being told not to consider an option brands it at the forefront of one's mind, Sunstride tells himself not to linger and feels his frown deepen immediately.)

It is washed away through the force of something more cheerful. Mousepaw is not a moor runner in the way that he is, but their paths have crossed even so. He knows the large-eared apprentice to be capable and resilient in times of trouble, though perhaps a little sharp of tongue. As a similarly sharp-tongued cat at times, the lead warrior does not blame him. His grin is warm and violent, his shout a roar of thunder as he calls out their newest warrior's name. "Mouseflight!"

There is still a wound inflicted upon their clan. It would take time to heal, certainly, yet it would heal. They had healed from all that came before.

Where Mousepaw hears Sootstar changing the ceremonial words, Bluepaw hears nothing. The girl was born devout, but her mother and StarClan are synonymous; even if she’d noticed, would she have thought anything of it? Truly, tradition is in the eye of the beholder. Fluff-tipped ears perk as her tunnelmate is called forward, and she thinks the name their leader bestows upon him is fitting. Mouseflight, for the speed he’d used to catch her under the earth.

She wonders if he is loathe to leave his home behind, now that he has been made a warrior, or if the honor has given him a surge of confidence. Surely now, with Badgermoon disgraced and driven from the Clan, his prowess would be needed here more than ever… but Mouseflight does not say he wants to stay in the moorlands, and Bluepaw feels just a little disappointed.

Still, it is only proper to cheer for a cat she considers at the least a companion. “Mouseflight! Mouseflight!

The idea of making the trek far away into the mountains has become less daunting as the day has passed on. Days ago she dreaded leaving the clan behind, leaving Curlewnose and Badgermoon along with half her kits. Now, she finds that she cannot wait to get away from the gorse walls. If everyone she cares for is doomed to die, or to turn traitor, then perhaps it is best that she and two of her kits are far from the moorland. Better to be far from the suspicious eyes of the same clanmates who had looked upon Hyacinthbreath’s kits with disdain and disgust.

Still, Scorchstreak is not eager to go on a trek into the mountains alongside so many cats she does not know—does not trust, not with her life. And certainly not with the lives of her kits, of Rattleheart, of each of the young warriors and apprentices who will represent their clan on the journey. As the calico moves to stand beside her similarly-colored kit, the daughter who will likely outgrow her mother within a few months, she casts a look of gentle concern toward Scorchpaw. She seems distracted—which Scorchstreak can understand, her own thoughts forcefully pushed to the back of her mind and decidedly not lingered upon.

The leader names her chosen cats for the journey, the cats who she will be taking along with her to this gathering, and Scorchstreak glances around camp. A frantic light dances in golden eyes, heart pounding in her scarred chest. This may very well be the last day that she gets to see the lovely walls of their camp, the sway of grass across the moorland. This may be the last day that she sees any of these clanmates. She should have said goodbye to Weaselclaw.

Her attention returns to Sootstar as the she-cat announces a new warrior, naming him Mouseflight not even a day before he will be sent off to the mountains and will possibly never return. "Mouseflight," she cheers for the young tom, but her voice is less enthusiastic than she would like. To make up for it, the she-cat attempts to catch Mouseflight’s gaze, shooting him a smile that she hopes is encouraging, but feels like more of a grimace across her muzzle.

SOOTSTAR
Sootstar gives Mouseflight one more proud look before ascending back onto the Tallrock. The sun continued to shift in the sky, they would not have much longer until it was time to make the trip to fourtrees.

"That is all I have for this meeting, but..." A look of uncertainty spreads across her face. Two deputies have served her over the course of her reign, one who could not hold his power due to his wounds, another a traitor. Three medicine cats, two traitors, one whose motives were unpredictable and uncertain. The curse had seemed to end with Wolfsong, would she be able to rest peacefully with her next deputy?

"I've decided that @SUNSTRIDE will join me tonight as deputy of WindClan." It's easy to find the bright-furred tom among the field of dark coated cats. "And when we return... he will remain my deputy. ...He is my choice."

It's difficult to gauge what thoughts swarmed inside her head, but she meets Sunstride with a firm dip of her head.

"Dismissed." Just like that she disappears of her rock and into her den, a shadow that would only emerge once the sun began to bleed the sky orange and violet.

✦ .   ˚ .   The uncertainty that filters throughout Sootstar's voice brings pause to Sunstride's joy. It had seemed fleeting to begin with, yet unnerving still to lose. His gaze upon her is cautious and wary– not of her, but of what news she may bring. Has StarClan spoken to her once more? Has she found out what became of her traitorous deputy? His attention darts briefly to Scorchpaw. What he might have said or thought does not escape the barest stirrings of his mind, and he returns his attention to their leader where she stands. He does not know why it strikes him suddenly, that it is odd to see her here, without StarClan framing her shoulders. Perhaps it is his mind recalling a time many moons ago, where he stood before those who were no longer here.

Weaselclaw, his chest rising with great difficulty in the badger den. Vulturemask, whose body he had returned across bloodstained shoulders. Badgermoon, who he had once trusted as a friend. There is a scar on his chest to mark what he had said. Delicate and hidden beneath the fur of his chest, yet burning now with the weight of his own attention. She calls his name and speaks to him as her deputy. He will remain.

When he came to this place, he knew that with time he would prove himself. An outsider, unlike those who had already faced their trials with the birth of WindClan. His strength and determination had served him well, and through himself, all of WindClan. What had been a desire to fit in blossomed. First to hope, and then to love. Sootstar remains only long enough for him to return her nod of understanding, and at once he is left alone with the force of his clanmates surrounding him. "I have sworn to Sootstar once before that I would protect this clan with my life– I will not fail you now," he assures in as confident a voice as he can manage despite the thrumming worry of his heart.

┌─────────────────── ☽【❖】☾ ───────────────────┐
When he first hears Sootstar's call, to gather once again the base of the Tallrock, for once, Luckypaw doesn't wish to heed it; how easy it would be to stay curled up in his nest, evading sleep and duty alike, he thinks. It's like a whirlwind had descended upon them all these past few days, tearing his world to shreds, and now more than ever he feels unprepared to face the future. Of course, even if he hesitates a little longer than usual, burying his nose into the scent of his nest (one last time, maybe), he doesn't delay long enough to miss the beginnings of the meeting - perhaps one of the most important meetings he'll attend, even if it's just a formality at this point. They've all already been selected to go; all that's left is the journey itself. Heavy paws carry him over to stand near Scorchpaw and Scorchstreak, not saying a word as he settles into place for fear that his nerves will get the better of him. Even in the wake of everything that's happened - or, perhaps, even because of everything that's happened - he's unable to quell the fear in his heart, and the deputy-sized hole in there certainly doesn't help. Pointedly, he refrains from staring at that empty spot, though the only reason it doesn't consume his every thought is the very announcement that Sootstar wastes no time getting to.

His first gathering, and this is how it's going to go, huh? Preparing for a perilous journey, one he might not return from, with cats from other Clans, not to mention, and he wouldn't even get to be by his mentor's side? Instinctively, he seeks out the grave-dark and stark-white tunneler in the crowd, wanting to stand by her side one more time. Maybe they would have some tips for him, about what gatherings were like and how to conduct himself, though he's certain it will feel paltry in comparison to the real thing. Later, once they were dismissed to say their final farewells, he would seek Cygnetstare out, exchange words that couldn't possibly hope to convey the weight of what's to come, but for now Luckypaw stays glued to the spot, waiting for whatever was to come next. It's a surprise when Sootstar calls upon Mousepaw, but really, it shouldn't be - he's almost of warrior-age anyways, and besides, it's probably best to hold his warrior ceremony now, just in case. A moon ago, he would have found himself wondering about his own ceremony, fretting over what name he might be given, and even still he does, though his thoughts are tainted by musings of whether he'd make it back to have one - and this, this feels more real than any other worry he's had before, more possible.

The air is thick with tension, with nerves and anticipation and a hundred other things he couldn't name, but it feels a little lighter when Mousepaw is dubbed Mouseflight, his new name spoken aloud for the first time. They weren't especially close, not really, but working in the tunnels gave Luckypaw a sense of kinship that managed to drag his voice up out of wherever it had gone to hide. "Mouseflight...Mouseflight!" Rusty at first, uncertain, his voice picks up a little more life the second time, not wanting to ruin Mouseflight's ceremony. The new warrior didn't deserve that, not when he had surely worked so hard as of late to prove himself worthy of being named, and being named early, at that. While he doubts that Mouseflight would look his way, he'd still try to offer a small smile that he didn't particularly feel in his heart. Once the cheering finally dies down, he prepares himself to head off, spend what little time he has left with friends and acquaintances alike, with the scent of WindClan all around him, but Sootstar still does not dismiss them. What else could she have to announce, he wonders? What more is there to say when time feels so short? That's all, she says, but. But.

What comes next feels like a claw in his heart, dismay tugging at him. She had chosen a new deputy, already? Like so many others, he's sure, his gaze darts towards Sunstride, and he can't help but stare, even as Sunstride affirms his loyalty. It's not that he holds any particular distaste for the tom, and, of course, he isn't foolish enough to think this day would never come, but...it feels so soon, so quick, as though Sootstar were trying to cover up any remaining memory of Badgermoon. Maybe she was; maybe, just maybe, it was for the best. The sooner he forgot, the sooner it would stop hurting, or at least that's what he hoped would happen. Still, even as he takes in the sun-dappled new deputy, he can't help but wonder if he, too, will end up betraying them all sometime down the line. Sunstride doesn't seem like the type, fiercely loyal to his Clan and to his family, but hadn't Badgermoon been the same way, too? His gaze never wavers from that golden pelt, and even as the sting fades to resignation and perhaps something more hopeful still, his own cautious voice chimes in with the others cheering for their new deputy. StarClan willing, this one would not turn traitor, leaving behind his family as Badgermoon had done before him, though had the stars not allowed Badgermoon to remain as deputy for so long? It's all still too raw and confusing, so rather than try to puzzle it out with his precious little time left, Luckypaw instead opts to wander off, in search of something to busy himself with until it was time to leave.

It is not easy the hide the pulse of arrogant jealousy that echoes in her chest, rippling down her spine, curling around her blackened heart like a serpent preparing to strike. In practice, Sunstride was a perfectly serviceable warrior. In all aspects of clan life, the golden-furred lead warrior was the best option for Sootstar's right hand. Still, that snake coiled within her and it hissed when she could not.

She could not say that she vied for the position of deputy, but rather the proximity to the Queen of the Moors. To be deputy was to be within the Queen's inner circle, a blessing that the phantom would not be happy to see bestowed on anybody.... short of herself, of course.

But she holds her tongue, a blank expression - as is typical of her - masking the underlying bubble of emotion. How.... quaint ..... for Sootstar to honor the medicine cat's mate in such a way.

Well, today's the day, and all that.

Sedgepounce wakes up less frenzied than he'd imagined, a curious echo to the other big events in his life, as few and far they are between. It's as though some strange, otherworldly calm settles on him in the night before a change. Steeling his resolve, settling his spirit. He breaks out into the morning impassive, if not strictly confident—cats draw themselves around the Tallrock and he joins them, straight-laced and level, watchful at the crowd which looks up to the sky as if they haven't already been weathered into husks. Yellowcough, Badgermoon. Misfortune plagues WindClan this chilly Leaf-fall morning. But, Sedge supposes, there'd be no reason for them to gather like this if there wasn't.

He breathes deep. The crisp air smells of gorse and heather and wind. He reminds himself to savor it, since he'll probably be missing it before long.

He's never really desired anything more than WindClan, but isn't it kind of exciting? He can't imagine what the world is like outside the moor. To think that soon he'll be experiencing it.

It's a double-edged blade. Sootstar's voice—regal and harsh, piercing like an icicle—reminds him of the gravity of the situation. Right. He needs to be serious. To focus on their mission, to help find the cure.

Announcements come and go. He can't help but to cringe to himself at the suggestion they visit Wolfsong, already resolving to shirk his way out of that commitment, if he can. A smile graces Sootstar's face for some of the meeting, spreading across her pious underlings like a balm to cracked, weeping wounds. It's good to find optimism in times like these—constant misery is a disease of its own. And the things announced are good! Mouseflight is kind of a jerk and a sore loser in the way that Snakehiss is, but Sedgepounce will cheer for him all the same. And Sunstride is, well. Sunstride. It's too bad that his promotion still feels so...sad.
