The air was crisp and stung her throat as she breathed it in. The wind whipped at her pelt, ruffling short fur and chilling bone. Sorrelpaw shivered as she stirred in her newly constructed nest, dreams slowly fading back into reality, pulling her from the soft clutch of sleep. She rose from her nest, woven of grass and lined in rabbit fur for warmth, and stretched on legs still stubby from kittenhood. She was young, yes, but Sootstar appointed her apprentices young. Though her parents might worry, Sorrelpaw was glad to be out of the nursery. She had more freedom, and more opportunities. Most importantly, she could prove herself. She was no longer a helpless kit but a capable apprentice and she would become the best warrior someday, she hoped.
She watched quietly for a moment as pairs of apprentices and mentors went out on patrols for the morning. Her paws itched to join them, but she had yet to be assigned a mentor. Soon, hopefully, she thought, a small wave of doubt crashing over her before she shrugged it off and made her way toward the camp exit. She'd just have to make someone take her along with them. She'd never get a mentor if she just sat quietly in the background, withering away and falling behind in her training. She hurried towards the nearest cat who looked like they knew what they were doing. "You. You going on a patrol?" she asked. "Can I tag along?"
