border Hope springs eternal | Riverclan patrol

MAYBE I'D BE A SAINT IF I WEREN'T ————————————

It’s not often that Snakeblink rushes to the border: he is not one to be overly fond of interacting with the other clans. Today is different, though, and he walks with more purpose than usual towards the part of the river that flows between them and the pine forest.

”No signs of Smokestar,” he notes to himself, keen eyes peering into the dark water as if it held any answers. Turning, he glances at his patrol, tilting his head towards the opposite shore. ”Let us wait a moment for any Skyclan patrol: they might have seen something on their side of the river.” Perhaps they ought to fish while they wait: with two apprentices along, no amount of practice could be ‘too much’.

-ˋˏ ༻❁༺ ˎˊ- Since becoming a warrior, his outings were not limited to just patrols or being beside Greeneyes anymore- his paws pressed into the branches high above the river, vision sweeping. Ears pricked and twitched as Snakeblink stepped onto the opposing shore. ... of Smokestar. The height, and noise of inflated river, caused him to be unable to hear the full statement. Falcongaze slipped down the tree, padding to the edge of the water.

"Riverclan." He greets, his tone neutral and gaze warm. He wasn't as prickly as some, at least. "How fare you?" He called, stepping to the edge of the river. Memories briefly traveled to that of Beepaw- had she been made a warrior yet? Was she doing alright? He withheld those questions, looking out over the water instead.

come along with me

Snakeblink's forever shadow prowled behind him with matching green eyes scanning the border with him. Her pelt had not stopped shaking since they started their trek to find Smokestar. Mostly, she was worried what they would find. She had never seen a dead body before, and by the way everyone in camp had been talking it felt like they might.

Turtlepaw paused when her mentor instructed. She felt extra wary and obedient today. Her ears perked at the sound of an unfamiliar voice and - uncharacterictically - she moved to hide behind Snakeblink. She didn't know this cat, but she could smell the familiar smell of bark that seemed to hang around SkyClan cats. Turtlepaw shot Snakeblink a brief glance of permission before she called out a shaky, "We're okay!" The thought of another clan knowing of her leader's disappearance instinctively made her nervous to tell them the truth.

SO WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS? — Everything lately felt so mundane to Pollenpaw, when she was so close to finally achieving her goal of being given a warrior name. It felt impossible to focus on anything else, and even as she padded along towards the Riverclan border, she found her mind drifting to when the next meeting might end up being. The sound of Falcongaze's voice was what finally roused her from her daydreaming though, the tabby's colorful gaze turning up towards the Riverclan patrol that mirrored them. Though they all looked far more wary than herself and Falcongaze, a fact that gave her pause.

Had there been recent tension with Riverclan that she just hadn't heard about, or was something else amiss?

Her long and fluffy tail settled across her paws as she sat down on Skyclan's side of the border, curiosity piqued as she glanced towards each cat scanning along the water. "Drop something?" The apprentice's voice raised just enough so that she could be heard by the other clan, tone free of malice but dripping with amusement. She figured that they had let a piece of prey get away from them, or dropped a trinket of some sort down into the water. The reality of their very leader having vanished would've seemed impossible to her.

Hawkcloud skips along the edge of the border behind Snakeblink and his apprentice, cheerful paws kicking up small bits of wet earth and stray droplets of river water in her wake. She appears decidedly less wary than the Clanmates she approaches with, but this is business as usual for the happy-go-lucky she-cat. The sun has risen on another newleaf day, enveloping both the reed-wrapped wetlands of RiverClan and the forest of SkyClan in its warmth, and illuminating the flowing water at their paws. While Turtlepaw and her mentor grasp onto the small bit of hope that they might find Smokestar had drifted along to their neighboring Clan's territory, Hawkcloud's inclined to believe that if Smokestar were so easy to find, he'd be home already.

Not to say that Hawkcloud has given up on their leader, of course. Ever the optimist and ever the cat with a mind full of airy clouds rather than thoughts, Hawkcloud believes Smokestar must either be playing an elaborate game of hide-and-seek, at which he must excel, or that the tomcat has set off an a daring adventure. She eagerly awaits the exciting tales he'll share when he makes his return. "We haven't, but it seems the Twolegs have been dropping all sorts of things into the river lately," Hawkcloud tells Pollenpaw in response, wrinkling her nose at the thought. She wishes the strange creatures would leave their territory well alone. "Did you see the small duck? The one that goes like this when you squeeze it?" Hawkcloud takes a deep breath, then, and makes a high-pitched, drawn-out squeaking sound.
