border I’VE GOT THE STRANGEST FEELING ♡ border tour

They'd visited three of their shared borders now, and the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon as they finally reached their fourth and final destination. Windclan had been quiet recently, since Sootstar had been overthrown she hadn't heard much in the way of trouble from their moorland neighbors. Though, she could vividly remember the day that she had been on a patrol nearby which had unfortunately stumbled into a large group of twolegs. What they had been up to out here, she still didn't know, but her spine tingled at the memory of one trying to grab Thundergleam. Hopefully it was an occasion that would never repeat itself.

The pale lynx point felt her paw steps falter slightly as the gorge that separated their two clans came into view, her heart stuttering with visions of the last time she had been in this spot. They had been leading the wolves away from camp, desperate to be rid of them after she and her friends had failed to guard the camp the night of her warrior ceremony. Batwing and Duskbird had both died that day, and Howlingstar had lost a life. Somehow, it all felt like a lifetime ago, and yet it was still as fresh in her mind as the day it had happened.

Realizing that she had been stopped still for more than a few long heartbeats, Palefire cleared her throat and cast her apprentices an apologetic look. This patrol was for them. She smiled weakly though her tail wavered behind her, and she lowered herself to her haunches to hide the slight tremble in her paws. "Okay, so this is the border we share with Windclan. It's been a few moons now, but they also went through a difficult internal conflict wherein their leader was overthrown." It was an all-too-familiar situation to them now, and she hoped the subject wouldn't make Meadowpaw or Ivorypaw uncomfortable. But it was important that they know these things. "Sootstar was removed, and Sunstar succeeded her. His deputy is Scorchstreak, and they have two full-fledged medicine cats, Wolfsong and Cottonsprig." She paused, allowing the information to sink in. "Any questions?"

Did they really have to see every border today? The thought crosses her mind as every step across the territory makes her limbs ache and ache and ache. She had never done so much walking in her LIFE! At first, she had tried to keep conversation going but honestly, she wasn't really in the mood to talk much. To anyone who knew her, that idea may come as a shock but... She was tired, and more than just in the physical sense. So she follows her mentor, subdued in a way that might be worrying had she not just been through the ordeal of a lifetime.

At the WindClan border, Palefire pauses and Meadowpaw can practically see the shadows that cross her features. It was the same shadows she sometimes saw in other adults eyes, the haunted look that tells her that they are thinking of something that Meadowpaw might not want to know about. Something troubling. She doesn't say anything, doesn't pry, but she does stare out across those rolling hills and tries to imagine what her mentor might see there.

WindClan, she says and the name does make sense. She can see how, with no trees to break it, the wind might howl across the open plains. The information though, that they too had had a similar situation to ThunderClan's makes her blink. Except where her uncle had been killed before he could take the name of -star, Sunstar had ascended in rank and held control over his clan. "Was Sootstar bad?" She asks, her voice quiet and her features drawn in a thoughtful expression.

Did she deserve to die?

"This- this is Thunderclan, I'm sure you know- I don't know how your previous mentor introduced you to them. But trust me, they were pretty cool in the Journey. Going on that trip really showed all the clans strength, I couldn't hunt in the trees, but they made it look so easy," he laughed, shaking his boulder of a head. He had ran straight into a tree trying to hunt in the tight knit lands. Blue eyes drifted to the Thunderclanners and a gentle smile was placed on his maw at the two apprentices and warriors. "I want to just make sure you keep respect of the borders, and of the other clans in mind. Treat every clan with respect until the time comes that you cannot. A lot of skirmishes happen- and I don't care to have to deal with you getting in one. I'm sure you'll be fine in a fight, but nonetheless, we don't wanna deal with that. Unless it's their fault, then beat their butt."

His tone was loose as milkthorn approached with lakepaw at his side. The moorrunner gave a gentle dip of his head towards the Thunderclanners, his movements loose and fluid. "Hellooo," he greeted, dipping his head. "How's Thunderclan fairing? I heard the news you guys didn't show up to the gathering, are you guys doing better?" Genuine, caring? Maybe, or just curious. He barely attended the gatherings, but one was coming up soon.

@Lakepaw.

༄༄ It is easy to tell when the other clans have recently held a monthly meeting. The sudden uptick of mentors guiding their new apprentices around to each border would be noticeable even to an inexperienced warrior, and it is certainly noticeable to Scorchstreak. This seems to be one of those such tours, the calico notes as she pulls her dirt-dusted form out of a tunnel nearby. Her eyes dart back behind her, a glance at the two apprentices who are expected to be following, before she looks across the border to the two cats who stand there.

"Hello, ThunderClan." She casts a glance to Milkthorn as the tom begins spouting off questions, a silent warning. Her patience with him is beginning to fray, and his prying is unnecessary. The calico has little idea of what had happened to ThunderClan that had prevented them from coming to the last gathering, but she can draw her own conclusions from the information that she has gathered. Flamewhisker and Gentlestorm had never been to the moonstone together as far as she can recall, and both bore wounds across their pelts too severe to be from normal wear and tear. She will not speak on her suspicions, however; ThunderClan's hardships will be announced in the next gathering, and the deputy can wait until then. Hopefully Milkthorn will not push for more information. "How has your tour gone so far?"

The deputy means to stay out of the conversation apart from her single question, but the apprentice's question draws her attention. Was Sootstar bad? You do not know the half of it. Golden eyes shift to the pale-furred warrior, expectant. What does the ThunderClanner have to say about WindClan's former leader? She had delivered the initial explanation of WindClan's politics with clinical accuracy, but will she allow her voice to be heard in full?

There is always a jolt of something that cuts through Bilberrypaw when he sees the cats of another clan. It is a strange reminder of life outside of himself—outside of WindClan. There are other cats in other clans that Bilberrypaw doesn't get to see often; they trudge through leaflitter rather than picking their way through tall grasses and rabbits are a rare delicacy rather than a commonality. He imagines his life may seem as strange to them as theirs does to him.

"Did something happen?" The whispered question, directed up to Scorchstreak, sounds conspiratorial rather than concerned; if something happened Bilberrypaw should know about it. His time spent ill has left him out of many conversations.

And then, to the other apprentices, he chirps a bright, "I'm Bilberrypaw!"

His dark tail raises into a friendly wave behind him—everyone else seems so serious. Perhaps it is that Milkthorn and Scorchstreak are used to the borders, that the excitement of an unfamiliar face has faded from them, but even the other apprentices seem far more subdued than Bilberrypaw feels. "Isn't it exciting seeing the borders for the first time?" He prompts.

By this point in their journey, Ivorypaw's limbs ache with every movement, and her eyelids have begun to slip over the dark expanse of her eyes. Even Meadowpaw seems to be lagging, though the ginger she-cat does not verbalize her complaints. This border smells fresher, less dense, and Ivorypaw takes a moment to stare beyond the forest, where the moorland dips and falls. "There are no trees there," she says, her ears flicking with confusion. "How do they hide?"

Palefire explains about Sootstar, how WindClan had overthrown her, and Meadowpaw asks poignantly if Sootstar had been bad. Ivorypaw thinks about Skyclaw, about the way he'd killed Howlingstar, had gotten her and her other Clanmates banished, and her fur begins to crawl. "Was she like..." She begins, but the moorland grasses tremble, and cats begin to emerge.

A spotted black-and-white tom, a scarred tortoiseshell warrior, and an exuberant patch-furred apprentice all gather along the border. The two warriors are cordial. The speckled tom asks if ThunderClan is doing better, and Ivorypaw shuffles her paws, feeling out of her element. She does not want to answer for Palefire, so she turns her attention to the flame-streaked she-cat. "How has your tour gone so far?" Ivorypaw dips her head. "Tiring, but it's very interesting to see how the other Clans live," she mews.

To the apprentice, Ivorypaw manages to smile even through her exhaustion. "Hi, Bilberrypaw! Nice to meet you. I'm Ivorypaw." She curls her tail around her paws, grateful for the chance to chat and rest. "It is exciting! I never knew ThunderClan had so many borders."

Out of their neighbouring clans she minded ThunderClan the least, that was the one Orangepaw came from after all and try as she might it's really hard to hate him so she applies the same logic with the clan that houses him. Truthfully she didn't think of the clan often, anyone she knew by name was through that ThunderClan apprentice and she preferred it that way. She brings a paw to her head, trying to dust off any remnants of the tunnels that she might not be able to reach with her tongue. Despite her desire to ignore the politics of the clan surrounding WindClan she has been realising that it is a good idea to be on top of it. So they feign ignorance through their attempt at brushing off the grime from the tunnel, a large ear flicks as her head perks with interest in the face of Milkthorns friendly questioning.

Bilberrypaw was bright as ever it seems, seemingly happy to chat with the ThunderClan's apprentices, and Ivorypaw replies in kind. She squints at the sight of her, she seemed young so there was an assumption that she was a brand new apprentice rather than a change in mentorship like they have experienced. "Do you have a favourite border?" It's a fair question to ask, if not incredibly nosy. Surely no one here would be upset if the apprentice didn't answer with WindClan but with a wayward glance to Scorchstreak she wonders if that would be a wrong assessment. Since she's deputy does that mean that she has to be offended? They flick their tail in thought as they take the opportunity to enjoy air that wasn't stuffy.
