The search patrols were taking too long. It had already been a day (or was it two? she couldn't tell when it felt like eternity). Eaglepaw had yet to be found and Cloudpaw was going crazy. She hadn't slept since the flood, and couldn't get his voice out of her head, telling her that he would find her. "Go. I'll find you." She wanted to be angry with him for breaking his promise. They both knew she wouldn't have left without him if he hadn't made it, but he was supposed to keep his word. So when the hours ticked by and he still hadn't shown up at the beech copse, her heart shattered. The ivory apprentice refused to believe the worst, knowing in the deepest part of her soul that he was still alive. He had simply been swept away like countless other Riverclanners, and if they looked hard enough they would find him.

But there were other clanmates to search for, and the majority of their able-bodied warriors and apprentices were preoccupied with the rest of them. It would be wrong to say she didn't care about the others; she did, but she cared about her best friend more. Right now, his safety was the only thing she could think about. Cloudpaw refused to rest until he returned home at her side. Once she had made sure that Moonbeam was alright and settled in their new makeshift camp, she slipped away without telling anyone where she was going.

The alabaster molly slipped for about the hundredth time that night, her paws sliding across the mud and coating her fur in another layer of brown sludge. Her body trembled from the cold that had long ago seeped through her soaked skin, but she forced herself to keep going. Mint green eyes narrowed against the spitting rain as she scoured the riverbank along the Windclan border, having already checked close to fourtrees. He hadn't been there, so she kept going. "Eaglepaw!" she cried into the wind once more, her voice hoarse from hours of calling his name. "Eaglepaw! Can you hear me!?"

Mud. It seeped into his senses, smelled of earth and rot and silt and fish guts. He had smelled just about enough of it that when his eyes cracked open, bleary and red-rimmed, he did everything he could to close them again. He wasn't sure what woke him after being washed up here, his paws still brushing into flood water. His head ached, his breath reeked- that all he could tell.

There. There was that noise again. -aw! His eyes drifted open again, slowly. His breathing hurt. Eaglepaw's head slowly lifted, which was a mistake. A sickness hit him then. No, Eaglepaw hadn't ever had a head injury, but he knew what it looked like. It looked like gray fur brushed with stripes, stained with blood. It looked like Graykit's mouth agape, screams shirked by the shock. It looked like the clan shunning his brother, it looked like everyone looking at him with pity and worry.

Eaglepaw swallowed any nausea that threatened to rise. Eaglepaw! Can you hear me!? Green eyes cracked open again. Stars, he was tired. His jaw ached, everything hurt- everything hurt. But that sounded like storm clouds clearing from a darkened sky, it sounded like freedom and fresh air, it sounded like... "Cloud." His breathing was wheezed, but her name was said on the coat-tails of a sore voice. He definitely had swallowed water at some point, judging by the taste of bile in his throat.

"Here." Her paws steps were closer now. It was hard to think, but Eaglepaw knew he was trapped. There was a branch over his flank that he was too sore to move off of him. His paws were barely in the river's-edge, and he was coated in mud. Vision shifted and turned, which made him flinch in pain. His head hurt. When Cloudpaw did bring her vision upon him, he was trapped under a branch thicker then his leg, and longer then two of him- blood coated the back of his head, hidden in the mass of fur on the back of his neck.
