Pitchstar was dead. Just like her mother, all her brother's lives had been taken at once. By some nameless rogue, no less. Another senseless tragedy.
Ravenpaw had not cared much for her brother in life. Every moment he spent as leader, he was a embarrassment and a disgrace to the family name. Quietly, she had seethed that it had been him her mother had chosen to succeed her. His death should have been a relief.
Even though she still hated him, even though it was better that he was gone, grief blossomed in her chest. There was some part of her that mourned the fool.
Weakness.
Ravenpaw sat wide awake in the darkness of the apprentice den, silent aside from the breath of her peers, her two sharp yellow eyes staring out into the night. In the stillness, she wrestled with her heart. All she wanted was for this feeling to go away. Leave her alone and let her think of her brother's death as she should, as a mercy. A small gift upon her clan and her family.
The more she attempted to rationalize it, the more it seemed to grow. Eating away at her from inside. Suffusing her thoughts with sorrow. All she could think was that her last act toward him had been to subtly let him know she hated him. In the end, he must have hated her too.
No one could ever know how she now felt. They would see it as an admission that she was wrong, and admission that he would be missed. As if he was a good leader.
Her eyes narrowed.
Ravenpaw forced herself to hate him more.
