THERE'S A WORLD THAT WAS MEANT FOR OUR EYES TO SEE

She had never been so confused in her life about a new feeling bubbling in her chest. Inexplicably, her chest swells with delight at the idea of sharing a nest with him. His unabashed, foolhardy nature and the way he speaks her name, the twinkle in his flaming red eyes... His tricolored pelt silhouetted by the snow, the way he still keeps going even with an injured back and missing tail... In fact, those things hardly mattered to her. Tail or no tail, she was completely smitten with Wildpaw, and there was no denying it no matter how many times she tried.

Patchpaw watches as he leaves the medicine cat's den once more to stretch his legs, and she can't help a little snort. He's got ants for paws, she comments to herself with a smile. She couldn't blame him, either--it was terribly cramped in here, even while Berryheart was out. Then, a familiar voice drifts over from her right. My mentor...?

She glances over to see Rabbitnose and Sunfreckle, cuddling up next to each other with smiles on their faces. He's been visiting Sunfreckle a ton since he got injured... They must really love each other, then. An idea comes to mind, and she quickly checks her surroundings--the others seemed to be asleep--before she scoots over to the two of them, taking care not to let her leg drag on the ground again.
"Can I ask the two of you something really quick? I know it's funny, but I was only curious. It's for a... hypothetical situation, and I wanted to learn more about it."

Smooth.

Sunfreckle did not like being in the medicine cat den, it had a very bitter scent and reminded him too much of his time cooped up in the nursery. Some of their warriors complained like kits anyways so the ambience was similar enough. With a chuckle he shifted to bury his face back into Rabbitnose's side, content to simply nap away his time spent here to expedite him leaving and getting back out into the world. Already his three paws itched to patrol, to hunt, to roam the territory; that he had ever been caged once in his life was something that would kill him before he ever went back to it.
Several of the apprentice's had ended up far worse off than he did and he made a mental note to check on them even after he was released, which by Berryheart's short comments was not too long. Not terribly long at all. Really, he was being mopey for no reason. So he told himself.
The red tabby lifted his head as he heard the shuffle of paws, blinking drowsily at the tortie apprentice with a smile.
"Patchpaw? You alright?" She speaks, rambles about a question, something hypothetical and he shows his teeth in a grin because nothing was hypothetical for apprentices. His own kits tried that and failed, he knew a friend of a friend meant oneself and a friend having troubles meant their own troubles, but he'd humor it all the same. "Go ahead, dear."

The entire ordeal with the dogs had exhausted him both physically and emotionally. He had escaped snapping jaws and death itself twice already, and it wasn't easier the second time. A dog took his tail, and now, an ear was shredded.

He was quite happy to sleep his woes away. He loved sleeping. Especially when it was snuggled up next to Sunfreckle. He was so soft and warm, he couldn't help it. He purred softly as he felt his face bury into his side. Rabbitnose may be in a little pain, but at least he was comfortable.

Patchpaw had someone she liked to snuggle up to too. Don't think he hadn't seen them cuddling in the medicine den. He lifted his head as she approached, and smiled as she spoke.

"What is this hypothetical situation?" He asked.

He idly wondered if his apprentice has gotten in trouble. He said the same thing when he was in trouble as a kit. Did it work? No. He sucked at lying.

"What is it like to love each other?" The question came on as suddenly as it was unexpected. Patchpaw tilts her head at the two of them, having already settled herself down by tucking her good paw underneath her. "I-I always see you two together. Wherever one is, you can be almost always sure the other's close to follow... how did the two of you figure it out? Realized it, I mean?"
Her questions were somewhat jumbled, but they were coherent enough to get the point across. She glances off to the side with a shy little laugh.

"I asked my dad on what it was like for him, too... but noticeably, I don't exactly have a second parent." For a split second, her smile falters, then she turns away to face the den's entrance. "He said it was like having your whole world be turned upside down--like you've never met anybody like them. Is that what love is like? Changing someone's life just by existing near them?"
While she didn't mention the rest of her conversation with her father, she distinctly remembered his response. A somber depression befell him when she brought up her mother, but Patchpaw barely remembered her now, only by her face, her eyes, and the soft white belly she was once tucked close to. Even after so long since they had arrived at ThunderClan, her dad was as wrapped up as an insect in a spider's web, waiting for it to take him--the haunted expression in his eyes would not leave Patchpaw so soon. He had continued to talk, though, as if nothing even slightly disturbed him, and despite the attempt to bring him comfort by pressing herself against his side, he had given her a playful lick on the forehead and ushered her back to the medicine cat's den, saying she needed her rest.

During the entire conversation, however, he hadn't said a word on what happened to her mother or even a hint to why he was acting so strangely. He was grieving, yes... but for all his doting over me, he refuses to talk about it to me. I don't even remember my mother's name--what else was he not telling me?

Her chest squeezes tight at the memory.

Patchpaw turns her head back to face Sunfreckle and Rabbitnose. "But is it normal to be scared of it? To be scared of losing each other?"
