border i was in the middle ground ☁︎ RIVER PATROL

—————————————————————⊰✿⊱————————————————————
The tide of the river has fallen low, the summers heat unhelpful in its struggle to remain leveled. The usual flow and ebb with the season had become expected for a warrior the Deputys age, but she still remained sore about the lack of fish on this side of the river.

"Oh wow, look at that." Hazecloud gasped as she leaned down over the bank, her nose pressed against the soft petals of a pale lotus flower. "Haven't seen one of these in a while." The island camp was too busy for these flowers to truly prosper close by, only finding tiny buds dotted among the wide flat lily pads.

In her distraction however, Hazecloud was oblivious to the quick flash of silvery scales underneath the surface. It breached the waters surface, and suddenly her cheek felt cold and damp as it slapped against her fur, before promptly disappearing below. Hazecloud straightened herself up, and turned to look at the other cats on her patrol. "That doesn't leave this patrol." How embarrassing.

”Are you still holding onto the moss?” Figfeather meows as they near the bank. She tosses her head to the side to look at @Daisypaw to confirm if he still grasped it for herself.

It was a hot and humid day in the forest. While SkyClan’s pines provided heavy shade and refreshing breezes, working warriors and kits playing in the sun found their tongues easily dried. It’s why the mentor and apprentice duo appeared now at the RiverClan border, moss-in-paw ready to be dunked into the cool depths of the river.

A face she has not seen for several moons stands at the other side of the water, her nose pressed into a lotus. They arrived just in-time to see the feline’s embarrassing splash to the face, Figfeather inwardly cringes, knowing what it was like to miss out on prey to no fault but your own.

”Shrug it off as rust from the nursery.” Figfeather lightly jests. She places her paws at the water’s edge and looks momentarily at Daisypaw, a silent request for a strip of moss. Figfeather turns her head back towards Hazecloud and her patrol, she was pleased to find her former journey-mate back in action. Her kits must be apprentices now.

Close behind Figfeather and Daisypaw, Howlfire trails after them with her own apprentice. The day had been hot and humid, and Howlfire stared longingly at the river, desperate for a quick drink to relieve her dry throat. Howlfire lapped at the water quietly for a moment, before straightening and running a tongue over her wet lips. "Make sure you get them extra wet," Howlfire mewed encouragingly. "No doubt our clanmates will be thirsty with how warm it has been today."

Movement on the opposite side of the river catches her eye and she turns to see a RiverClan patrol, spotting Lakemoon and Hazecloud among the cats present. She's surprised to see the older she-cat, having not seen her for a time, but assumes her kits must now be apprentices if she was back out. She managed to see the embarrassing splash to the face Hazecloud received. It was an unfortunate accident, and Howlfire finds herself fighting hard not to chuckle. "Tch, some prey just have no manners," Howlfire quipped in a lighthearted manner.

While as withdrawn and downtrodden as ever at being pulled away from her siblings for a patrol, Frecklepaw is rather relived that she has been assigned this task without the shadow of her new mentor hovering over her. There's nothing wrong with Driftwood specifically of course - in truth, the two have hardly interacted enough for Frecklepaw to have formed any sort of opinion on them - but it's the newness, the change that leaves her unsettled. Lips quiver and tail hangs low as she plods along after the others, eyes steadfastly glued to her paws - missing the newly named deputies embarrassing moment all together. Still, calls from across the water have her jolting, glancing between them unsettled and pressing closer to the riverclanners on patrol - memories of her last encounter with outsiders still fresh on her mind. The Skyclan patrol aren't rogues, sure, but she doesn't trust them not to be a threat.

.·:*¨༺ ☾ ༻¨*:·. On the heels of her deputy Lakemoon is a silent, silvered shadow. The scarred warrior never had much to say on routine patrols such as this, spare for when she turned to her apprentice with a question on her tongue. As the patrol nears the rivers bank, the sound of calm water lapping sweetly against the meadowland shore is a tantalizing melody under the thick new-leaf heat. Azure optics watch as Hazecloud draws closer, studying a drifting lotus.
Stormy hued paws draw closer. Smack! Glimmering scales are already disappearing below the surface when Lakemoon’s attention is caught, Hazecloud’s abrupt straightening only earning a slight raise of the seasoned warriors calloused brow. “Noted.” Is her only response, turning away as she clears her throat. The tabby tried not to stew too much on her thoughts about Hazecloud’s promotion, the former queen was a formidable and hardy warrior, but something about her step into deputyship had felt strange, the tears fallen had made the striped warrior uneasy. Figfeather and Howlfire’s arrival comes only a heartbeat too soon, and the formers call across the border officially makes the embarrassing ordeal a cross-clan spectacle to comment on. Howlfire’s quip earns only a brief glance from Lakemoon, it still felt strange to have kin on every border, and yet there were no familial ties to be crossed with any of her aunt's kits. “We’ll have it for dinner, eventually.” Lakemoon hums, shifting her attention to Frecklepaw, the deputy’s apprentice looks as though she’s seen a ghost. Perhaps the fish had given her a scare, too.

Frecklepaw looked dour despite the sunshine's warmth, Lakemoon's response more formal than she would have anticipated. The smile from her maw swiftly fell, her pelt itching from the awkward lack of... life in this patrol. She hadn't thought that her words would come off as a deputy's order, and not a simple molly's humor. More changes for her to adapt to from the role.

Of course the moment is not without it's unwanted witnesses, but Hazecloud is at least grateful it is seen by friendly faces. "Figfeather!" Came her enthused greeting, the uncomfortable tension gone within moments. "Greenleaf looks wonderful on all of you, will I see Bobbie patrolling again too?"

Hazecloud glanced back to look at Frecklepaw, who appeared far more wary and encouraged her to come closer. "Figfeather journeyed to the mountains with Lakemoon and I. She helped us climb a cliffside, the last thing between us and the lungwort." That felt like ages ago now... it was, nearly a full seasons cycle!
