ILLUSIONS of GRANDEUR ⸸ iciclefang

"Iciclefang, can you...show me how to fish...?"
Magpiepaw had no hope he'd be any good at it, but it was something to do and it was worth giving an attempt. Stealth was not exactly his forte when it came to hunting, he stumbled and staggered about on awkward limbs that seemed to have a mind of their own and often times he scared prey off without even knowing it was there to begin with. But when the molly and her brother had comforted him at the river before the mountains he remembered the swift and clean manner with which she simply slung a fish from the waters at their paws; she had not really even moved from her spot and it was moving he found the most difficult part of catching prey. So while he had no delusions he'd be amazing at it, he considered it to be a possibility. ShadowClan had a small stream cutting through it and many smaller patches of water around the loamy territory he could take advantage of if necessary - they wouldn't have fish rich like the river, but minnows and smaller things were still food at the end of the day.
With ThunderClan doing the forest hunting in this strange and unfamiliar place, he figured something other than picking plants would be worth his time and well, he liked Iciclefang. She was sensible, kind but not too much that it felt dishonest, stubborn in the good ways and the bad. He often wondered what it would be like to have a sibling like that, the closest he had was Starlingheart who was much too soft on him at times and he was very aware of it, but he'd seen the RiverClan warrior and Fernpaw interact enough to know the dynamics were quite different. She cared, but her care was brittle and sharp as her name.
"There was a little pond...I don't know if anythings even in it though."

XXXXXOf all the cats on the journey Iciclefang worried for, Magpiepaw ranked higher than most. She’d seen the uncertain, wobbling steps the medicine cat apprentice takes, the weariness he still carries after losing his first patient. He’s young, younger than Fernpaw, but he carries a burden she knows well—the look in veiled blue-violet eyes is reminiscent of the one she’d glimpsed in Ravensong’s. When he approaches her and asks her to teach him to fish, Iciclefang dips her head. “I can try, but it’s not as easy as I make it look,” she says, flicking the white tip of her tail against his flank to lead him. She knows the pond he’s referring to—it’s small, indeed, and with the chilly temperatures, she isn’t sure if they’ll have any success.

XXXXXAs they near the edge of the water, she can see tiny dark shadows. Minnows, or near enough, but they’ll serve the two felines’ purpose just fine. “They’re more like snacks for kits,” she tells the ShadowClan medicine cat apprentice, “but it’s a good place to learn. A lot of our youngest apprentices start out fishing minnows.” She uses her tail once more to hold him back from casting his shadow on the water.

XXXXXFirst lesson: careful where you sit, and keep your voice low when you speak. Fish are easily startled.” Her own is a cool, flat whisper. “You must be quick. Hesitating will give them more time to swim away.” She lifts an ivory-tipped paw and tilts it slightly, showing him the cupping motion she’d used to fish from the streams. “You more or less forcefully scoop them out of the water like this, and then you bop it on the head to prevent it from flopping back in.

XXXXXAfter a heartbeat, the tortoiseshell mews, “Try it yourself.
