Snow crunches beneath delicate paws, and foggy gusts plume from a dark pebble like nose. Curls bounce and twirl around a focused pair of sapphire hues, a small body spinning in the air but he was as steady as a bumbling toad when he wasn’t in the water. A seasoned NPC warrior was showing him a move, one that required skill he hadn’t yet. Precise footing wasn’t something Dogteeth had, his legs were short and his paws roll at the heel. He was ditsy and the NPC let him know it. “ what exactly qualifies you as a warrior, boy? ” the words are simple and meant to poke at nonexistent temper. Dogteeth hadn’t a space for anger in his heart, it was near impossible to invoke it from him.

Dogteeth stumbles and thuds a shoulder on the fresh snow, a huff leaving his lungs as he is pinned for the tenth time. “ what qualifies you to mentor Minnowpaw?! the npc tries again, and Dogteeth’s nose crinkles at the bridge. It’s an uncommon crease on his muzzle.

As gentle as a hummingbird’s heart, a man who would rip his wings off and fly for those he loved- even those he didn’t even know. This was a cold world to live in, and to have such a loving soul was to be cursed at times.

With several long iced breaths of silence, the pinch between his brows deepens. there was something, if but one thing he was masterful at-

" Try to outfish me " Dogteeth grits out and spins at his hindquarters kicking out like a wild jackrabbit. His heels connect with the snarky warrior’s chin and the man staggers. Dogteeth’s muzzle is pulled into a frown but melts into a smile of pure glee. “ There you go. ” the npc grunts his approval and dismisses himself.

" I did it! " he whispers to himself, still catching his heaving breaths.

Those who can, do, and those who can’t… do not teach, that’s for sure, but Snakeblink does like to watch — battle training, that is. It’s good to know what his clanmates can do in a fight. Besides he’s never truly abandoned the hope of picking something up from observation alone. He hasn’t yet, but watching some of these cats fight is a reward in and of itself.

Dogteeth is an interesting case. He doesn’t have the brutal grace of others, meaner fighters, but he puts his heart into it and it shows even when he struggles. He’s all heart, that one. It’s nice to watch him succeed though, even if it lacks the spectacle of, say, Smokethroat wiping the floor with his apprentices.

Snakeblink settled on the sideline to watch the little training session, paws tucked under himself to insulate them from the biting cold. He doesn’t move when the NPC walks past him, keeps his gaze strained on Dogteeth so as to not see whatever emotion flickers on the impromptu mentor’s face when he notices the skinny tabby. Briefly, he considers leaving in his wake, but… the quiet pride in Dogteeth’s voice keeps him there a moment longer.

”Impressive,” he drawls, clumsily sincere. ”So you can fight. Minnowpaw will be in good paws, hm?”

Dogteeth's gentleness is an asset to the clan, a reminder of the bonds they must nurture to survive, but it's reassuring to know he can hold up his own in a fight. For the clan's sake and his own.

( ) "Dogteeth!" Minnowpaw scampered towards the two toms, eyes of brilliant copper would glitter as she smiled her sheepish smile, and its full warmth and admiration were aimed solely at her mentor, "That was amazing!"

Minnowpaw was rarely ever so outwardly expressive; the only two cats who could truly bring her out of her shell were her sister and her mentor. The silver Somali quietly purred her pride as she turned and spotted Snakeblink, "I've always been in good paws! Dogteeth is a wonderful mentor!" Her shy demeanor came back a tad, stepping back and pressing against the blonde tom for support but she would still purr nonetheless.

Sometimes, sometimes Finchpaw forgot that Dogteeth came from the same horrifying background he did.

It was easy to, when he saw others socializing with the tom with genuine ease and Dogteeth himself carrying himself with confidence in turn. Not to mention, nearly everyone knew the tale of how the golden warrior earned his name. That kind of raw strength scared Finch, his own most of all, it caused him to avoid training in combat as much as he could, much to his mentor's seething disappointment. "Softhearted brat" She had once snapped at him. But it was fine. He could more than contribute to the clan with his hunting and swimming skills. He didn't....need...to hurt anyone...right?

The apprentice nods his agreement to Minnowpaw's claim, having tagged along at his mentor's behest (read: order) that he spend more time observing battle training while she did border patrols. He then gestures that while he understood why the other warrior had said what they did, he didn't think it was a good idea for them to poke at Cicadastar's judgement just to help Dogteeth out.
