The moors are covered in a blanket of white and they stick out like a sore paw but to be quite honest Straw never cared for anything as trivial as that. It was their duty to help the clan, the NPC back at camp said so. As if there was no care in the world they trudged through the sheet as if it were just another obstacle, in which case it was, but it did look pretty. They huff slightly, looking back over their shoulder to see if they had made it far only to flick an ear as they realize they're only about a tail-length out of camp. Eugh...

They trudge just a bit farther before they begin to paw at the snow, dig, dig, dig, thats what they were told to do. Go out and dig tunnels or whatever you do, the exasperated NPC had sighed and they took it literally because after all, they were higher authority than them. A small tongue pokes out between their lips as they claw at the frozen ground, determined to get at least a pawful of dirt up. Their efforts were in vain before they caught sight of a returning cat, staring them down intently. They wanted help, they'd get help, yeah? Thats how it worked.

green eyes watched quizzically as another apprentice lead an assault on the frosty moor. underneath her judgmental gaze, they just kept digging away. long legs carried crowpaw over to the tunneler before she crouched down to their level.

"what are you doing?" she questioned, confusion evident on her sharp features. the earth was far too cold for digging right now, any sensible cat would have given up and came back when the ground had defrosted. thats what she would do at least, and crowpaw considered herself very sensible. maybe they didn't know their efforts were in vain? "you know you're not really getting anywhere, right? the ground's too cold," the girl said slowly, tail twitching behind her.

TAGS The blue point approaches not long after Crowpaw, struggling a bit with her trudge through the snow as Strawpaw did. It's at times like this where she almost resents her tiny stature; as much of a blessing as it is in terms of her own job as a tunneler, it's proving to be a real pain during this type of weather. But it's fine — they spend most of their time underground, anyway, where there's nothing on the ground but dirt and rock. No hindrances.

Her head tilts as she observes her fellow apprentice at work. Or, trying to work. Crowpaw's right — the dirt's practically frozen solid, at least on the surface. They're a tunneler, too; they should know that, she thinks, admittedly a bit judgmentally, and then remembers she only learned this pretty recently herself, given this is her first leaf-bare. Surely it can be easy to forget; StarClan knows she did in the beginning. "Yeah, we should just be focusing on what tunnels we already have," they chime in. And then, after a moment that feels awkward to Icepaw, "Good effort, though."

A cat's claws would likely break up before any tunneler, regardless of experience, broke through the earth at this time of year. Sootstar wishes for more tunnels, but it'd be unlikely they'd have any until the snow melted and the rabbits dug new burrows for their kits. Still, seeing apprentices at least trying to be hard at work and helping their clan pleased her enough.

With the correction of fellow apprentices already landing on Strawpaw's ears, Sootstar decides it's best not to add further critique. Instead, it was time to move on and become productive. "Tunnel entrance is just over that slope, how about we dive in and try to work on our mapping skills? Maybe we will find a scent while we're at it, fresh-kill pile could always use more prey." Especially with the ill... Sootstar's nose was still stuffy but at least she had not succumbed like poor Wisteriapaw.

Gravelpaw has been keeping an eye on their clanmates. It’s a weight on their mind, an itch in their chest, the urge to watch and watch and watch. Any sign of doubt, sign of disloyalty, is clocked. They don’t know why they do it, can’t land on a solid answer. Is it for Sootstar? For their father, keeping tabs on the clanmates that he chose to live alongside? It’s certainly not for their own sake; the constant observation, looking over their shoulder, waiting for some kind of betrayal. It makes them feel almost sick with it, skin prickling at the image of a clanmate knowing them, knowing too much, and harming their clan, their family.

Strawpaw, though, displays no outward signs of villainy. Naïvety, maybe. But they’re harmless, really, digging at a hole that’s clearly not going to work out in their favor. As Crowpaw states, the ground is frozen, too cold to churn up more than a couple bloody pawfuls of dirt. And even that much would wear out anyone—it’s generally less efficient than using the tunnels that are already there, and the whole clan needs as much energy as they can get during the winter months.

They hope that Strawpaw doesn’t take their clanmates’ criticisms too harshly; they were attempting to do good, at least. They say nothing, though, because the other apprentice doesn’t need another cat telling them that they’re doing it wrong. Gravelpaw only offers a slow blink and a flick of their ear. If the others will be mapping out tunnels, then perhaps they can tag along. They’re curious about the tunnels, anyway.

Crowpaw... Schmopaw, Crowpaw... Confusion apparent on Schmopaws (Crowpaws) face, Straw blinks at them blankly as the other speaks, their head swiveling to the side. "Digging." they reply simply as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, monotonous as they stare. What else would they be doing? They think for a second, trying to come up with something, anything else that they could appear to be doing before they quirk a nonexistent brow in a quizzical manner.

The next one points out the same obvious statement that Schmopaw uttered, just in a different format. Icepaw... Micepaw... Icepaw, Micepaw, they giggle slightly before returning to their emotionless state. They shake their head. "No." they give the ground a couple more scrapes, maybe they could find worms underneath the earth. Surely they wanted to be there, it was warmer inside than out, they want to play with the worms and so they start it up once more. And yet, they would have continued if Sootstar hadn't appeared. Inward frustration leads to a flick of an ear, they were told to dig! That was their job, to go out and dig tunnels. But they guess that Sootstar outranked their mentor, because she was leader or whatever that meant. They blink, eyes shifting downwards. Worms... Oh worms, we will meet next time, surely. They were safe for another day but as soon as Straw got their paws on one it was game over... Strawstar, leader of Wormclan, feared by their subjects. Straw slightly wonders if they taste good, silly little things.

"Okay." they speak simply, rising to their full height (which to be fair wasn't any taller than their former crouched position) and kicking snow over the small dent they had made. Gravel is next but no words come from their mouth, which Straw finds to be nice. "Tunnels, now." they beckon for them to come over despite their intense stare. Oh, wait, maybe... Worms lived in the tunnels. Straw doesn't blame the worms because they were smart and always able to avoid their watchful gaze. Straw will get them one day.

TAGSStrawpaw is... interesting, for sure. Maybe that's putting it a little too nicely, what with their brusque replies and weird, out of place giggling that earns a quizzical look from Icepaw. Weird's probably a better descriptor for them as a cat, too. Their stubborn refusal to heed the other apprentices' counseling admittedly ruffles her a bit, sending a ripple of irritation through her small frame, but externally it only manifests in an awkwardly blank stare bordering on judgmental, and a stretch of silence as she tries to figure out what else she can say. If anything. She's not the best at this.

Sootstar approaches before she can come to a conclusion, upon which she straightens her posture in an attempt to look more... serious? Warrior-like? Gravelpaw follows suit, and she offers both of them a smile to acknowledge their arrival. Their leader, of course, comes up with a good plan — and how exciting, getting to work alongside her! "Sure," Icepaw replies with an enthusiastic nod and a lash of her striped tail. It'll be nice to get back underground, too; it's so bright out, especially with how reflective the snow is in the sunlight.

Juxtaposing her own (admittedly somewhat muted) eagerness is Strawpaw's characteristic, curt monotony, which continues to bother Icepaw a little too much for no reason. She keeps her expression even, however (something she's gotten good at), and starts making her way through the snow. "Good thing we have the tunnels for extra food during leaf-bare," she muses. "I bet we're a lot better off than a lot of the other Clans."
