It had been a while since Palefire had a chance to talk with her apprentices one-on-one. So much had been going on, with one terrible blow dealt to their morale after another; she could not remember what peace felt like. And both Meadowpaw and Ivorypaw seemed to be locked in misery's grip, destined for the same life of heartache and hardship that she had been forced to endure. Hopefully, they could rely on her to bear it with them. Palefire had been lucky in many ways to have Nightbird as a mentor. The lead warrior had made her strong, confident, and capable. But she was also stern and rigid, and hadn't provided comfort or understanding in difficult times. Palefire hoped she could be that for her own apprentices now.
The lynx-point waited for a moment of calm to approach Meadowpaw, seeking the girl out in her den at the end of the day. The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon and now seemed as good a time as any. "Meadowpaw," she called softly into the darkness. "Come out for a moment." Palefire backed away, waiting patiently until she spotted a red-striped figure following her out. The young warrior offered her a warm smile, gesturing to the camp entrance with a short tilt of her head. "I thought it might be nice to take a walk and watch the sunset. Would you like to join me?" The sky was painted in a myriad of warm hues, and it wasn't often they had a chance to simply enjoy the fact that they were all still breathing. It would do them both some good.
