border in the hills, in the pines ;; tc dawn patrol

she preferred taking this path on patrols, windclan’s territory looked nicer than the voided path of shadowclan’s. theirs stretched out like a moat, while the moors blossomed this time of year. but word travels fast after a gathering, so she was prepared to leave early if necessary. hopefully, that won’t be the case, though the last time she helped gentlestorm gather herbs ended in deer viscera. it would be fine.

"let us know when you need to check somewhere else," leafhusk says to gentlestorm as they approach closer to the border. she didn’t care if the healer wandered off for a few moments to grab something, he could take care of himself and he’s easy to spot in this season, but anxieties are high after flycatcher’s death. he is, unfortunately, their only medicine cat right now.

once there, she rubs a shoulder against some bark to remark the scent. "what’s a prey commonly found in windclan?" she hums, turning to the tabby apprentice by her side.

The trek to Windclan had been uneventful. Leafhusk had asked Adderpaw a few questions here and there, and Ravenstrike had done the same to him. It was the same thing that happened with every patrol. The dark furred tom was ready to become a warrior, to boss around his own apprentice...to not have to answer any more stupid quizzes. He trailed behind his mentor, rolling his eyes every time Gentlestorm stopped to sniff a leaf. Why did they have to bring him along anyways? If they ran into trouble, what would the Medicine Cat do? Sit on someone? Border patrols needed real warriors, ones who could fight off their enemies...not heal them. His claws tapped the ground with each paw step, begging to be released. Surely they would run into some trouble, right? A trespassing Windclanner, a fight over a piece of prey. Who knows, maybe those rogues who killed Flycatcher would show back up. If he killed one, then maybe Howlingstar would give him his warrior name early, for avenging her former deputy. His eyes gleamed at the thought, but his day dream was interrupted by yet another question by Leafhusk.

Golden orbs widened at the question, begging for the other apprentice to get it wrong. What good gossip that would make in the Apprentice Den tonight. His tail lashed hungrily, waiting to see what Adderpaw would say. The tom stalked away to mark a tree, but remained close enough to listen.

Ravenstrike didn't bother to bombard her apprentice with countless questions like Leafhusk, mostly because she made sure Smokepaw was the best that he could be. She had no time to waste training an incompetent scoundrel, and wouldn't hesitate to quickly fix his mistakes or scold him to fix them. However, her apprentice was a fast learner and she was glad that Howlingstar gave her someone quite decent and not a useless brat. She stalks along the shadows as she brushes against a tree here and there to freshen the scent of Thunderclan, along with shedding tufts releasing as she rubbed along them. Her piercing amber gaze swats across the Windclan border, the scent of smoke faintly tingling her nose as she heard news of Windclan being caught afire.

"What makes Windclan different from Thunderclan?" The raven coated feline would inquire as her eerie gaze shifts on her apprentice, she'd much rather be in silence and wait for some mouse-brain to start a scene. Her claws craved for a fight, the thrill of fighting as your adrenaline rushed and the blood pumping in your ears was something to get high off. Her apprentice and her are close together and she pays no mind to the rest of the patrol, her gaze staring at their surrounding for something to test her and for her claws and fangs to dig into.

Dragged into yet another border patrol, Adderpaw limply carried himself behind Leafhusk with low enthusiasm. Regular hunting patrols already annoyed him enough, his intestines twisting and bending into uncomfortable knots from the pressure of his clanmates' eyes burning into every movement he made. Thankfully he had been making progress in the hunting realm, but combat was a topic for him to worry about another day. It was simpler to turn his mind off to the buzzing of berating voices than to torture himself by dwelling on them.

Leafhusk's questions were welcomed to the apprentice, despite what others may think. Although he was quite spacey most times, his mind was sharp and alert in order to impress Smokepaw, the older apprentice who took his stride behind Ravenstrike with confidence ripping under his muscles. It envied Adderpaw to be so behind that he needed to be quizzed on pretty much everything that required a little bit of brain power. Despite his distasteful feelings towards Smokepaw and his brother in their constant need to scavenge for any scrap of dirt they could find on any of his denmates, he couldn't help but admire the other's drive to success, immediately jumping to any opportunity he had to perform well in front of his mentor. Smokepaw didn't need to be thrown so many miniscule questions, he just did what he was told so naturally it made the tabby's skin heat with anger. It was something Adderpaw hadn't had a taste of yet, but he knew when he managed to just touch the tip of his tongue into the puddle of growth he would become too addicted to it.

Eyes warily scanning over WindClan's moors, Leafhusk's next question was popped as dread flowed through his veins. He wished to be able to retreat back into himself to hide from the instant glare that he could feel from Smokepaw on the back of his head, fur prickling in self-consciousness. Unfortunately for the other eager apprentice, Adderpaw knew this question. Lips turned into a cocky grin as he snapped a look in the gray-furred apprentice's way before meeting back with Leafhusk's gaze, chest puffed with pride. "That's easy! Rabbit; it's also their main source of food. Uh. Right?" He wasn't so sure on that, but what if he was right and he got to subtly but not subtly rub it in Smokepaw's face? Gaze darting to Ravenstrike for a moment, he wondered what Smokepaw would say before turning his attention to Leafhusk with an awkward shuffle of his left paw. He didn't really know if he should mark anything, so it was easier to just stand around and let everyone else do the work unless told otherwise.

'CAUSE SOMEWHERE DOWN THE BANK — How lucky he must be to stuck on another patrol with Leafhusk and he remembers the last time that had happened, the memory alone makes him shudder briefly but he nods in her direction. "Of course," Gentlestorm replies simply only to move a little ways from the patrol but not far considering that the threat of wolves had been taken care of but the rogues that had killed Flycatcher could still be out there. So even if he may wander, Gentlestorm's alert of his surroundings and unsheathes his claws cautiously until they dug into the soil underneath his paws. He may be the medicine cat of Thunderclan now but that didn't mean he had forgotten all he had learned as a warrior, his ears angled forward as he listens to Leafhusk and Ravenstrike quizzing their apprentices. It makes the former warrior wonder what it would've been like had he gotten his own apprentice before the journey or when Berryheart had extended the offer of medicine cat apprentice to him, he decides to think of an apprentice of his own.

A pretege to succeed him after he passes but his thoughts are distracted when he ends up finding some hawkweed which he carefully harvests with large snowy dipped paws. He holds it carefully in his jaws deciding to return to the small patrol and briefly glances over his shoulders to make sure that there was no eyes watching him, a soft snort leaving him.
