It's strange, the way Budkit keeps saying things like "she not your mother she mine!" When he looked around the nursery, Butterflytuft was just like any other mother in there. She fed him and Ramkit, cleaned them, told them stories, played with them. It doesn't make sense to him then why his big sister would say that. Maybe she's just confused though, he used to get confused a lot, after all and he still did! Just the other day he confused his sisters paw for a mouse trying to sneak into bed with them, for example. Mostly though, he's confused about his other mother. Was she his mother? The adults kept pointing at her and saying it, praised him when he echoed it, but that couldn't be right! And besides, he hasn't seen her in forever. If she was really his mom why wasn't she here, with him?
He's having that nightmare again. The one where Ramkit and Butterfly disappear while he's sleeping and he's alone on the cold floor, not even a nest to cradle him. He's cold, so impossibly cold that he swears even after he awakes with a jolt he can feel it. "Mommy?" he calls out softly into the darkness, tiny voice trembling but still he tries to keep quiet so as not to wake the sleeping figures next to him, only the one he's currently pressed up against.
When at first she doesn't stir, he reaches out and shakes her with one paw until she does. "Mommy?" he tries again "I had a bad dream…" he craves the soothing tongue over the ears and the gentle voice of his mother to tell him that it will be okay, and he looks up at her with blue eyes rimmed with tears ready to spill.
