The storms had thundered and boomed all night. There had been a dribble of ice cold water that was steady as a stream and it pooled right into his nest. The apprentice remembered trying to get away from the drip as it ticked onto his pelt, yet he had disturbed another apprentice. Was it that he stepped on their tail? Was that what they'd hissed at him for? Heronpaw couldn't remember. It was late and the other apprentice was fast asleep before he could even apologize. Lucky.
That relentless dripping had finally ceased by the time the sun started to peak on the horizon, but the damage was done.
Heronpaw was dragging out his nest from the apprentices' den with hung eyelids. With a grunt, he heaved the soaking mass of once soft moss into a small pile to be discarded. He sat back on his haunches and stared at the small pile from those glowering, dimmed ice chips. Why did wet moss have to be heavy?
Those eyes flicked towards the den with malice as the hopes of going fishing were slowly slipping out of reach as the sun climbed higher. A groggy growl rumbled from his chest, "I really need to patch that."
That long, feathery blue-tipped tail twitched to and fro behind him as he drilled clear claws into the ground. Sharp, white teeth ground together as thoughts raced behind icicle eyes. How is it that I was so unlucky to get the only spot in the den with a leaky roof? How had it not been noticed until now?
As the new apprentice, maybe it was just the short reed stem he'd drawn?
He heaved himself to his white tipped paws with a heavy sigh. Belly rumbling, but ignoring it, he began to trot around the den to where another apprentice stood.
"Oh! Hey, do you know if there are any other spots?" He asked before tilting his head and angled his ears towards the den.
