Camp life was an adjustment, a big change that Shrike was struggling with. They didn't present themself that way, making a conscious effort to not. Every move seemed to be made with confidence and all the self assurance that they remember their father having on the rare times they interacted. It felt like all eyes were on them here, not in a form of attention they would seek either. In Shrike’s personal opinion some cats here felt more akin to vultures, waiting for one misstep or inaction to pounce on the loner. They'd much rather not give them that opportunity but that was at odds with the fact they were struggling to adjust, much less remember the rules established here.

They were starting to understand the code, they didn’t remember everything right now given the limited amount of time they’ve had with it. Yet, Shrike was pretty certain that they remembered the most important parts. Defend your clan with your life, don't hunt or trespass on others territories, prey is killed to be eaten.. whatever, they understood it. Unfortunately, they had forgotten the important fact that the warrior code stipulated that elders and kits were to be fed first, then apprentices and warriors.

Their stomach was growling and Shrike was hungry, food was hard to come by as a loner, not that it wasn't hard to come by now but the residual boon of prey from the frogs meant there was still an impressive show for the pile. Shrike wasn't able to resist the pull of grabbing food early, having genuinely forgotten about the rules. They walked towards the pile, chest puffed out with false pride as usual. Strides delicate but purposeful as if there was meticulous planning behind their decisions. A rat rests there, appetising and calling out to be eaten. They stand in front of the fresh kill pile, jaw clicking as they decide on what to take. They could have sworn that they heard someone either speaking with them or.. About them? They were too enraptured in the spell that their hunger had over them to properly regard the speaker's remarks.

That spell is broken when they hear the voice grow a little louder, an ear twitches towards the warrior and their tail flicks sharply. A paw that was once outstretched towards the enticing little rat had settled on the ground, leaving the prey untouched. Suppressing a roll of their eyes they glanced at the warrior, oh, Orchidbloom right? They weren’t exactly thrilled to see her again given how terse the last interaction was. “Hm, what did you say?” There was a drawl to their meow as they tilt their head curiously, seeming indignant rather than apologetic for not hearing whatever they had said.

When she goes to deposit the frog she had caught earlier, she catches sight of Shrike on the edge of the freshkill pile, seemingly contemplating on what to get. A frown stretches across their lips. Surely by now they had been talked to about the warrior code, right? She decides to give them the benefit of the doubt.

"H-Hey... Warriors d-don't eat first." she tries to be helpful. She really does, but maybe shes too quiet because Shrike doesn't pay her any mind. "Queens and elders eat before us, as well as the injured and sick. We have to make sure they're fed first, its one of our Warrior Codes we live by." they raise their voice, still soft and it crumbles before her because yet again she isn't heard. "Hey!-"

Hm? What did you say?

Anger courses through her at how dismissive it sounds and she grits her teeth, eyes narrowing. Thats it! Thats it, they're tired of being ignored, they're tired of being in the background, they're tired of not being a main character in their own life- "I said y-you're breaking the code. Warriors don't eat first, s-smart one." they suppress the urge to bark it out with a command, instead their voice slightly louder now, an annoyed twinge hanging in it like a wrong-struck chord. They don't know what has gotten in to them lately, or maybe its just this cat in particular that gets on their nerves... They don't forget the previous interaction they had, either. Now that had gotten on their nerves... "I- If you had listened the first few times I said it, y-you'd know. We have a code in place. Our vulnerable e-eat first. We eat l-last. Please respect our rules if you're going to remain here." their voice shakes violently again and they swallow hard. And maybe listen when someone talks to you, but it is left unsaid.

Any newcomer ought to be a spectacle. Whether its a lost kitten, a rando one of your numb - skulled lead warriors picked up off the street, or long lost siblings... or whatever, he thinks they all deserve to be scrutinized and judged. Luckily, her judgmental face was not very different from her normal face, or Chilledstar may very well kick her out. If she got kicked out before Forestshade, that'd be pretty embarrassing. She knows it's not a competition... but it sort of is.

Does Orchidblossom have this same mentality, or is it mere coincidence, that they catch Shrike in the act? It's pretty brave for someone like her to be the one to speak up. Maybe "brave" wasn't the word, because no one's ever dared to describe Sharpshadow with something like that. Maybe more like... surprising, substantial, agonizing? Stars, did he sound like that when he tried to correct someone? Silently, he works his jaw, as if a good stretch would stop him from ever stumbling over his words again.

He'd do something different. He'd do what he would've liked other cats to do for him, when he was stumbling over his words. Squinted eyes fall upon Shrike. The warrior's nose twitches. " Yeah, she's right. "

While Marblekit can sympathize with Stryker about not knowing the code, she can’t help but purse her little mouth in disapproval as she pads up next to Sharpshadow and Orchidbloom. She’d been a rogue once, lawless and free, but Siltcloud had taught them about the warrior code as soon as their little ears had opened. In the Clans, your loyalty is to your Clan first. Do not trespass on another Clan’s territory. Queens, kits, and elders always eat first. Prey is to be treated with respect. Apprentices are made at six moons, not before. She’d repeated them to herself like nursery rhymes, never knowing she’d soon be expected to live by those same laws.

Lilacfur puts a lot of stock into the warrior code, though. Her pale-pelted mother lives a life of honor, and that includes following the rules; Marblekit knows she expects the same from Sycamorekit and herself. Still… she remembers days where cats older and meaner than them had taken prey from Siltcloud’s weakening body, remembers days where queens and kits starved while others preyed. She can only imagine Stryker has the same problem.

She glances from Sharpshadow to Orchidbloom, then says, her voice prodding, “I think he prob’ly just forgot. Sometimes I forget, too,” she says meaningfully to the former loner.

damn marblekit for being right. and being around. they can't be pissed and angry at their sibling for being ridiculously annoying when she's around. she doesn't need to see chilledstar like that. they gently move to lick the young molly across her ears before they stand back up, sighing heavily. take a deep breathe, and relax. that's what they're trying to do.

"listen better. we have rules for a reason and they may seem annoying and weird but you don't quite get clanlife yet."

maybe they won't at all. they only roll their eyes at their inner thoughts before continuing.

"warriors don't eat first. simple. don't let it happen again or you will be eating last of the last. little pebble, you want a badger back ride to the fresh kill pile? you and sycamorekit can ear whatever we find on there."

sounded simple enough. anything was better than looking at shrike right now.

"come on, orchidbloom."

poor girl needed a break too.

There's a desire to roll their eyes at the young warrior but Shrike suppresses it easily enough. How come Orchidbloom just seemed perpetually mad whenever they interacted? Perhaps that was just Orchidbloom though? They had no reason to think that they weren't just naturally agitated.

“The Code?” They repeat back, looking at the warrior like she had grown a second head. What was smart one supposed to mean anyways? Was that an insult? Bit of a poor one if you asked them, but no one had asked so they’ll let that opinion die with them when they eventually pass. There’s a spark of recognition and a slow nod as they start to remember what they’d been told about the Warrior Code, unfortunately remembering the fact that the vulnerable ate first only just now. How embarrassing, they didn’t want to show off that they were embarrassed but it was evident in the way their ears flattened.

“You speak too softly” they state as if it were a matter of fact, a deep breath is taken as they feel their fur bristle. Another aspect of feeling so flustered for being rightly called out for their actions, they paw at the ground in front of them as they allow Orchidbloom’s words wash over them. There were onlookers now, they could feel Sharpshadow’s gaze on them, it burns worse than the sun ever could.

“Thanks for letting me know though. I’ll try to remember next time.” they mutter with a sigh, dragging out the thank you as if it were a stubborn child not wanting to follow their mother. The gratitude is clearly forced but it was genuine, they registered what kind of predicament they were in, it could be all too easy to be given some nasty punishment or even kicked out for this. While Shrike held the opinion these clan cats were pretty uptight they weren’t too sure what would push them for a punishment or exile, so they were just thankful that they hadn’t crossed that line yet.

They’re trying to do better, to get along well enough. That is why they try their best to sound genuine in the apology, even if the act itself is forced out. An ear twitches to Marblekit’s direction and they can’t help but follow that voice to look upon the kitten. Her reasoning is enough to smother the embarrassment, there is a small nod in agreement to her words. It didn't help that only a kit was able to relate to their dilemma of forgetfulness but they were thankful that someone at least understood it. That decent mood is sufficiently shattered when Chilledstar decides to weigh in, perhaps it was of the fact that they shared blood but the leader's words made Shrike feel like they were young again and being scolded by their mother for wandering off. They bite their tongue so they don’t say something they’ll regret later, their tail lashes all the same. “Yeah- I get it, I’ll do better to pay attention to the rules.” There’s a sigh that follows, the tone sounding defeated rather than defiant.

I think he prob’ly just forgot, says Marblekit. It's pretty cute. More cute than she should get to be, considering where she came from. Which isn't fair to think. Like at all, probably.

It's reassuring to hear Chilledstar lambast them. Not only did Orchidbloom need the help— he thinks, as if he wouldn't sound equally as pathetic would it be his job to give this speech— but Sharpshadow's kind of been wondering if they've lost it, lately. Well, he doesn't think they ever really had it, but they're not blind to their lookalikes failures, at least. And in ShadowClan, never having it in the first place isn't that uncommon. It scratches some kind of itch, listening to them be critical like this. Now she just needed to see them Exile Forestshade. ( ...Not really. Obviously. )

He feels no need to add onto this. And also, it'd probably suck if he did. So he resists the urge to angle a satisfied look at Shrike and looks to Marblekit, instead. " You're allowed to forget right now, Marblekit. ...Do all your forgetting while you still can. "
